Big sale boost for PlayStation 3 in June

Sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in the US rose by 21% in June, analyst figures show, but the machine still trails the Wii and Xbox 360. Tracking firm NPD Group reported that 98,500 PS3s were sold, compared to 198,400 Xbox 360s (up 28%) and 381,800 Wiis (up 13%). Sony said that the $100 price cut to the 60GB PS3 led to a 135% sales rise over the last two weeks. Independent figures for sales of the cheaper PS3 are not yet available. “This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software,” Jack Tretton, head of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a statement.

Nintendo’s DS handheld sold 561,900 units , while Sony’s PSP, which has been boosted by an April price cut, sold 230,100 units, NPD reported. Software sales in the US are 31% higher than the same time last year, the market research showed. “The industry continues to realise substantial gains, month after month, and on all fronts it’s great growth,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier told Reuters news agency. Nintendo said the sales showed that the firm was reaching a new gaming audience. Money talk Sony, we told you!

Although it’s great they are selling better, it could easily be a temporary thing like the price drop.

Rather than all this tarting around with different versions of the console and Home, they’d have been better focusing on securing some decent releases.

I plan to get a PS3 once i see something worth the crazy amount of money.

gta4 is worth the money. I got mine on a trade in your old ps2 shit deal, so it was completely worth it.

“Rather than all this tarting around with different versions of the console and Home, they’d have been better focusing on securing some decent releases.”

What? There’s only 1 version, it’s called a ps3. There was a “cheaper” version that came with a 20 gig drive instead of 60, but you must be thinking of xbox360 with all the tarting around of different versions, there’s no “1337 ps3 edition”

    re: Big sale boost…
I’m sick of these idiots with their constant marketing and advertising. We could have waaay better technology if they didn’t restrict r&d so much. These companies really need to be better, they’re lame. Where’s all the vr and stuff? Plus it takes so much energy to produce this crap and then it all gets dumped in the ground a few years later – and tax pays for the cleanup! So we pay for the product, then pay again to get rid of it just because companies can’t be bothered to find a proper way of making things. They’re so shit. Apple, Sony, etc etc, all of them pretend to be really clever and make cool stuff, but it’s just bs, in reality they just make crappy throwaway entertainment.

@phishybongwaters, I don’t live under a rock lol. But unless the wii has a all-oldschool-games-in-1-game theres a point to be made. I don’t think games these days are any fun. How cool it was when we were young that duckhunt and mario kept us going for days, weeks, months. I even had pong (Im from ‘86). PSP, wii-remotes flying thru telies, ps3, xbox360… I mean, the concept has changed alot, which is a good thing, I mean the interactive gameplay is great. But I see little change in the games itself (on the short-term), pointing to engines, graphic authenticy and realism. I think its of great marketing value to re-introduce the old nintendo console for 20 bucks or so, its another way of having fun. Ow well, I guess it would be really meaningless though. Lets upgrade our desktops and use emulators to run any kind of consolegame. After all, most games get release not only on a console. So… R5, love R5, Die Hard or Live free right. Finally a movierelease! :D

Hrm ok if you say so…..

    20gb version
    60gb version
    80gb version

NTSC versions have “EMOTION ENGINE hardware chip for back compatibility”
PAL versions have software emulator for back compatibility.

    oh yeah, apart from now……

The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model,” said Kimberly Otzman, SCEA Corporate Communications Representative.

So the 80 GB PS3 release will be the first NTSC PS3 to use a software engine for PS2 backwards compatibility. Will this mean PS3 80 GB owners will have to download updates to play their PS2 games on the PS3

stfu about fake die hard releases

  11. July 24th, 2007 | 16:05

    Good idea it dropped.

I heard once the 60gb is depleted, the 80gb is gonna go down to the $499 price as well – it better if they want to keep sales growing.

I have an XBOX, & someday will get an XBOX 360… Problem with todays consoles & all the hype is unless you have an $8000 gaming/audio/video room in your house with a 50″ HD 1080p Plasma & super surround 6.1, what’s the point? You really won’t be able to experience all the great advances some “Fiji-Yama-Sony-Moto” is talking about. The Japanesse population may be really into disposable high-end electronics with a 6 month life-span, but the average U.S. household isn’t buying all this crap, just to play video games. I’ve had some great gameing on my home PC (Call of Duty 2, Tomb Raider Anniversary), but I also realize that my PC monitor’s resolution out performs every TV in my house. So I’m hard pressed to believe I’m gonna get the same gaming experience the guy on “X-Play” has playing a console game, when he’s got $8000 in extra hardware backing up the consoles hype…

at least the ps3 has hdtv (wii doesnt) and doesnt break like the xbox360 (ring of death). oh yeah and its whisper silent + plays HDTV movies out od the box (bluray).

“at least the ps3 has hdtv (wii doesnt) and doesnt break like the xbox360 (ring of death). oh yeah and its whisper silent + plays HDTV movies out od the box (bluray).”

It’s also very pricey, has almost no games, is also prone to defects (the bluray) and has very few innovations compared to the PS3 (it’s basically a PS2 with better hardware).

Wii is not about graphics, but about fun. Xbox360 ring of death, are you 4 or something? The thing breaks if there is a moron behind it. You can break everything (and it’s your own fault), but internal defects is another thing.

Let’s just face it fanboys, Sony got owned!!!

“Xbox360 ring of death, are you 4 or something? The thing breaks if there is a moron behind it. You can break everything (and it’s your own fault), but internal defects is another thing.”

err wrong, internal defects are the same as something breaking, if you cannot use it for its intended purpose it is borken..

“Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail. ”

you CAN take that ‘could cause the device to fail’ to represent the quoted 1 in 3 xbox360 that is breaking/suffering from ‘ring of death’ and the fact that Microsoft wil be facing US$1.15bn Xbox 360 repair bill

Poor PS3. To bad you you way ove rpriced yourself. You should of made the blueray an add on and made the price of your system for $199. Juts like apple you are getting gready and I will laugh as both your companies pay! I like fun affordable entertainment. You both have lost your way.

No way am I gonna blow that much money. Damn they think we are all made of money or what. Sure you can get it out of slowly over months but who can afford or even like looking at numbers like that. I can buy a car for that price. LOL
