Best-Selling Games of February 2007

The NPD Group released its report on the top-selling software for the month of February, and there were a number of big winners spread out across multiple platforms, although the Xbox 360 had more games in the top ten than any other system.

Unsurprisingly, the super-powered cop simulator, Crackdown, was the number one selling game, likely propelled to that position because of the promised Halo 3 Beta ticket. Nintendo first-party titles continued to dominate the Wii with Wii Play and Twilight Princess coming in second and third place, and Wario Ware sneaking in at eighth. Several other Xbox 360 games continued their strong sales: Gears of War, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and Rainbow Six Vegas all made it into the top ten.

Here’s the complete chart. The dominance of console titles is absolutely obvious:

  1. Crackdown (Xbox 360) Microsoft
  2. Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) Nintendo
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) Nintendo
  4. Guitar Hero II w/ Guitar (PlayStation 2) Red Octane
  5. Gears of War (Xbox 360) Microsoft
  6. Major League Baseball 2K7 (Xbox 360) 2K Games
  7. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Xbox 360) Capcom
  8. Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (Wii) Nintendo
  9. NBA Street Homecourt (Xbox 360) Electronic Arts
  10. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas (Xbox 360) Ubisoft
  11. Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii) SEGA
  12. Resistance: Fall of Man (PlayStation 3) Sony Computer Entertainment
  13. MLB ‘07: the Show (PlayStation 2) Sony Computer Entertainment
  14. Madden NFL ‘07 (PlayStation 2) Electronic Arts
  15. God of War (PlayStation 2) Sony Computer Entertainment
  16. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (PlayStation 2) Midway
  17. Fight Night Round 3 (Xbox 360) Electronic Arts
  18. Fight Night Round 3 (PlayStation 2) Electronic Arts
  19. Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii) Ubisoft
  20. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GameCube) Nintendo

Obviously that’s a list of console games ONLY and you know this because there’s no SIMS or WoW which always top any list of best selling games.

It’s depressing that game companies don’t feel the PC market is viable for large budget efforts. It will *always* be concluded that to create a game for PC that can be ported to console will limit the scope and breadth of the PC game. The dynamic functionality of a PC’s reach in terms of memory, controls, and graphic potential will always be ahead of the console, yet gamemakers feel that to survive economically, they must create for the eventual port to console, or go from the console and then “enhance” to fit the potential PC market.

Every single game that fills either PC to console, or console to PC path will be hampered by the inherit design flaws of the console. Look at every slam dunk amazing game for PC lately, (”Oblivion ES3, HL2, Sims, Rainbow etc), – suffer on the PC because of the simplified controls they were forced to integrate in order release port console. Sure the eye candy was great, but the scope of the game and the limitations of the controls were always cut short of their potential.

When games become available on HD and Blueray, all they will do is further increase that gap, as epically advanced graphics and “size” games come out, they will *still* be limited by their controls. ASWD, Fire 123, Control, Shift. Use Key. Menu Key. This will be the controls of tomorrows game that is 60 GB large and contains all the best tricks graphics accelerators have to offer. Thus, it will be limited in it’s nature. Great to look at, sure. But it will never have the satisfying complexity that most every online PC game has (WOW, EVEo, L2, LOTRo, Starcraft/D2 BF2/1942) as well as First Gen PC only games like Homeoworld series, Tie/X wing series, Populous, C&C, Age of Empires, etc.

Game designers will be given a paint pallet with every color in the universe, a canvas as large as they can dream of but their work will always suffer when their brushes are cut short and their most of their fingers have to be bound in order to work. The only solution will be when (and if) console controls catch up with PC. When input on a keyboard is no longer required, and it’s all physical gesture or mental cue. When consoles offer inputs as complex as computers, or are replaced by them all together. That is a *long* way off though. Till then, PC games and gamers suffer.

Um, the NPD data is only in relation to console system. The report in question doesn’t compare console hardware and software sales to .. PC hardware and software sales.. a bit different market.

As a point of reference. WoW: Burning Crusade has sold 3.5 million copies from its release from a one month span of its release. Meaning it outsold the top 10 console games combine.

why am i an idiot, i know countless people through web and personally who buy console games but do not buy PC because it is easier and cheaper to crack and play a PC game, then to do the same to a console.
