Best of RLSLOG – Week 46

The end of the weekend is an ideal time to summarize the recent 7 days in terms of new releases as well as tech news, which were quite important (and sad) this time. First of all, I would like to officially introduce two new features of Releaselog, which you could have already noticed in last hours. The first new thing is the poll. It can be seen in the right menu and we plan to change the question every 7 or 14 days. The script is nicely written in AJAX, so everything works pretty smooth without page reloading.

The second major change to the site is new form of comments. I’ve added special script, which will split those posts with many comments onto pages with 100 comments each. This will make the post page little shorter and faster loading. The growing popularity of the site also meant a huge increase in the amount of comments and I believe these paged comments will improve the reader’s experience from the site.

I think you all probably noticed that we have no more problems with these error messages or timeouts, the pages are also loading significantly faster now, especially in the peak hours. The second server has helped a lot…

Summary post = good idea, polls…..meh direct democracy is overrated.

  10. November 11th, 2007 | 20:08

I’m so proud to be catering to 12% of this website.

I think the previous version of the comment split (1-25 // 26-50 // 51-75, etc) looked and worked better than just page numbers.

thanks for a great week of posts. give yourselfs a pat on the back. the only thing i dislike about this site is the daft comments you get by some people, i know you try your best to curb this but have you ever thought of sign ups to post

  13. OrthodoxAthiest
    November 11th, 2007 | 20:21

Don’t go for sign-ups to post… bad idea. While it may lift the average quality of posts somewhat, it will deter some people who have something relevant to say but will only post if it requires the least amount of effort… no log in, oe sign-up… people like me. I post on this site and virtually no other because a sign-up isn’t required. That’s why I luv ya. ;D

ps. the majority of idiots who have nothing to add… truly think they have something to add, and often crave an audience, so a sign-up wouldn’t deter them. :(

RlsLog just gets better and better everyday. ;)

Using the “read more” feature would be nice, especially on loong posts (like music which has long tracklists & apps with it’s features) since they seem to take up whole pages often,
and forcing us to browse through pages several times to get a days worth of news.

Yea using categories is an option, but they still use up a large percentage of the page, when just a brief recap/intro will due and those interested can read on….

anyways, keep up the good work

    @linny

Don’t be so quick to judge who can post and who can’t. Your comments certainly are no great addition to the site. Dumb kunt.

@17 id like to point out that i wasnt “judging” i was mearly asking if the situation had been disscussed amongst the staff. im sure there are good arguments for and against e.g 13 OrthodoxAthiest, a point well made, as for the quailty of my posts i belive they are more constructive than yours.

    regards

Keep up the good work RLSlog, but this is exactly my problem. Too many good releases and only so much time! Which should I download and play?

Crysis, Gears Of War or Call Of Duty 4!

  26. anonymous
    November 11th, 2007 | 22:42

QFT, which2play. It’s a tough choice! I say play GoW first, then Crysis (if your PC can run it), and then CoD4. I know I’m skipping Crysis for now..

Note that Razor1911 released three high end, top of the chart games in one week. Probably three of the most awaited games this year. Thanks Razor!

    ahum…..just tried to vote…..got error 12029

then when tryin to report it on here in a new window, i get like millions (slight exageration, but it was a lot) of windows.

dunno if it was linked to the error or not….bit coincidental though.

and no, i dont have some sort of virus etc.

personally, i like the way things are on here, but if it is going to make things easier and quicker….have at it.
    :)

A Week in review is an awesome idea.

@Martin, great idea Dude. Keep up the good work.

@Rlslog, keep up the GREAT work! You make the painfully high price I pay for internet and putting up with my ISP worth every little bit of it.

No more idle bandwidth in my house thanks to Rlslog + µTorrent

A little off topic, but where exactly do I post about annoying popups, ads, and activeX controls that crash my browser on this site?

    Anybody else ever experiece that?

Great website. The only thing that actually bothers me is the stupid “YOU WON!!!” ads. It’s funny to see those Windows’ popups on a Mac ;)

But then again, wouldn’t it be more profitable for you guys to implement Google Ads instead? It would keep the site waaay more clean and visually pleasing.

    Cheers!
