Beowulf 720p HDDVD x264-SEPTiC

This is one of those movies that you’re better off watching in HD to appreciate the effects properly. Not much to say about it as we’ve already informed you about the R5 and DVDRip releases.

Synopsis: Director Robert Zemeckis mines the epic Old English poem for his latest action adventure to feature performance capture animation. The medieval tale was adapted for the screen by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery, and no doubt it bears little resemblance to the text you studied in high school. So the story goes, King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) and his people are being terrorized by the horrific monster Grendel (Crispin Glover). Hrothgar puts out a call to any brave man who can come and slay the monster. Enter Beowulf (Ray Winstone) and his brave band of soldiers.

    February 19th, 2008 | 14:48

    its still a movie…
    it should be 1280p not 720p, any1 else think that the “standards” are stupid?
    should be the measurement of the horrizontal pixels not vertical, ive never seen a movie trimmed horrizontally, only vertical. just my opinion, it would make more sense.

    Hello,

    Please excuse my ignorance, can someone tell me:

    -Is this is a full HD DVD movie?.

    -Are HD-DVD movies only 4GB in size?,

    -If so then why not just use a regular DVD(4.7GB)?.

    -If I play this file on my computer on a HD monitor, will I get the full resolution as watching it with a HD DVD player?.

    Thanks you.

  26. WOOHOO
    February 19th, 2008 | 17:04

    @ panamajuice - LOL no, no, no, no…. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  27. SweatyRich
    February 19th, 2008 | 17:21

    @WOOHOO - Nice, constructive response.
    panamajuice knows exactly what he/she needs from that - DUH!

    @panamajuice - The original HD-DVD (or could have been Bluray) is compressed (using black magic) into a format that will ONLY playback on your computer (and then only if it’s powerful enough!). The uncompressed original HD file is MUCH larger!!

    It is in 720p resolution (not sure if this is same as the source - maybe that was 1080p?), so you’ll get a resolution of 1280×544 (as described in the info at the top of page).
    Most monitors these days are 1280 pixels wide (normally more), so YES, this will play in “HD”. Playing it back in full-screen mode also looks fine.

    It’s of file type ‘mkv’, so no HD/Bluray players will recognise it, only the computer, and you’ll probably need to download a different media player to play it.
    There are a few different ones (I personally use VLC), which are nearly all freely-available.
    Google ‘mkv player’ for more info than you could shake a stick at!

    Thank you for that very informative post.

    @panamajuice

    I might add :
    “If so then why not just use a regular DVD(4.7GB)?”

    Because of the gain of quality, and even sometimes you have MULTi audio and 720p. Of course not as universal as regular DVD

    Any RS links by chance ? :p

    Higher quality of the file does NOT mean a better quality of the movie. Sad but true. Beowulf sux. Nuff said.

    pardon this noob question, but why don’t they make hd movies as .avi so that I can play them on my xbox360?

  34. i7co
    February 19th, 2008 | 18:55

    @ lukas: Probably because an avi container’s maximum file size is @ approx 2GB (correct me if i’m wrong)?

  35. capnjngl
    February 19th, 2008 | 19:07

    The movie wasn’t as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Not great, but there are some pretty sweet action sequences, and the monster Grendel was kinda creepy, especially when he’s blabbering about in latin.

    Oh yeah, and Angelina Jolie in HD ftw

    @i7co

    “Probably because an avi container’s maximum file size is @ approx 2GB (correct me if i’m wrong)?”

    You’re right and wrong.

    You can have any size avi, but wether it will play on a standalone DivX player/PC DivX player is another matter, however you can have a 4GB avi which VLC player will play with no problem at all, where DivX can’t play it.

    However the scene used DivX/XVid as a standard so that inevitably leads to compatibility/size shortfalls.

    If you think video game graphics should replace both live action and animation this “movie” is for you. I thought it was crap, made by a 12 year old for other even less discerning 12 year olds.

    this movie sux big time!
    get it str8… story is a so-so… nothing’s new (what wud u expect?)
    but the animation is… an insult to human intelligence!!!

    imo, the animation of tv series starship troopers is much better than this!

  48. Gary
    February 20th, 2008 | 01:30

    STFU. This movie is HARDLY animation. It’s motion-cap you idiot. And of course the story is familiar, it’s based of the norse legend made AGES ago. Anything else you have seen using a similar story was taken from THIS movie, or at least the story with which it is titled after.

    The scanned Angelina Jolie’s body to create an anatomically-correct computer model of her for this movie. You just know the animators created their own animations using her model after they were done working on the movie. >:)

    February 20th, 2008 | 06:16

    @gary
    u ain’t serious, ain’t u? breaking arm, decapitating head… are motion-cap?
    somebody must be willing to be sacrificed! lol.. lol.. lol.. how much they pay for that?

    imo, reading the story is way better than watching this crap!
    n dun be tempted with ms jolie in the line-up… seeing her in a ‘real’ movie is much better than exaggerated figure in this crap..
