Greetings,
Generally your computer needs to be on and running for the desktop apps, but in exchange your password doesn't get sent to some random company's website with questionable security.

When you bid using eBay's 'auto-bidder' (proxy bidding is what eBay calls it), you expose information. You expose that you're interested in the item (items with bids get more clicks in search views), you expose that you're willing to pay more than whatever the next highest bidder is at the time you place your bid. Worst, there's a bidding 'strategy' used by a lot of users on eBay that snipers call 'nibbling'. Nibblers bid a little more than the current high bid. If they're still not winning, they do it again. And again. And again. Ratcheting up the price, so that even if they give up eventually, you're still paying more than you would have if they had stopped after one nibble.

Sniping protects you from those people (and many other non-optimal bidding strategies) by letting them think they're the high bidder until the last second, when they can't come back and nibble a little more.

Basically that's the core of it. Sniping protects you from other people's bad bidding strategies. Some folks find it also protects them from the 'red haze' of a bidding war, where you make decisions emotionally instead of logically. If you have the discipline to avoid that on your own, though, sniping still helps against other people's red haze. :)

-- Cyberfox, author of JBidwatcher, a free sniping with open code.

p.s. Yes, I'm the author of a sniping application (albeit free, so there's less profit motive) so you might consider me pro-sniping. The points above about sniping are independent of bias, however.

So does your computer need to be on and running this program for it to work? Or can i just set my max bid and turn off my comp?

well I didn't say anything about my assumptions except bob is bidding "$10 (max)" i.e 10 is his max bid. I didn't say anything about the current price- could be anything 0.01-10.00- you are right, you can't know what someone's max bid is.

The point is if his max was $10, Alice won the auction with any bid greater than $10. Bob had no chance to come back.

@20
"so if alice wishes to buy and bob is currently bidding $10 (max), by sniping she doesn't reveal her bid of $10.05 until the very last second. Too late for bob to bid it up $11."

Except that Alice doesn't KNOW if Bob has actually bid his maximum of something like $15 that eBay will kick in automatically if Alice makes a bid like that. Whatever your snipe amount is, it can still be beaten. You takes your chances.
If I want something badly enough, I'll set my final bid real high to attempt to beat the other guy's automatic bids.

@all the skeptics

there have been several economic studies as to why sniping is the best strategy to reduce the final cost of an item. It avoids bidding wars between buyers- something ebay's bidding tool encourages!

@ those who use desktop snipers

also tool like this are a waste of time just use free on line services like:

http://www.bidninja.com/

caveat emptor, of course you must trust the software or website with your ebay password

<a ="http://www.auctionsentry.com/">Auction Sentry</a> is a lot better than any of these crappy software. Too bad it hasn't been released by any scene group yet. I used the 10 day trial to successfully win an auction.

Before that I tried Auction Auto Bidder which was also released by TE I think, and it didn't work. It failed to refresh the item ending times and failed to place the bid.

So, if the price is, lets say, 50 dolares, in the last seconds people start bidding like 100 dolares, 3 seconds before its over, the price is already 1000 dolares, and the Auction sniper will bid even further? Wow.

@15 and 16
"sniping" is actually bidding the max amount in the last seconds of an auction..that way you can avoid bidding wars and most of the time you can grab the article for way below your max price..
and yeah jbidwatcher is 100x better then this crap..ive tried both

I don't thing, that the "sninping" strategy is working anymore, since eBay has - like No. 15 said - it's own Auto Bidder.

This used to work in the good old days, so basically can forget it.

I was just wondering what the point of this software was since ebay has its own auto bidder? All you have to do is put in the max that you are willing to pay and it bids up to that amount if someone else is trying to win it. I'm pretty sure its basically the same thing as this except that you put the amount in early. I just don't see why you need sniper software if ebay will do it for you. I pretty much always win even with last minute ebayers.
lol just thought I would spit out my thoughts for the day!w
