Avenged Sevenfold formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California while the members were still in high school. The band uses pseudonyms, and call themselves M.Shadows (vocals), Synyster Gates(guitar), Zacky Vengenace (guitar), Johnny Christ (bass) and The Reverend (drums).

Avenged Sevenfold released their first full-length CD Sounding The Seventh Trumpet in 2001. Their sound was metalcore, combining hardcore and heavy metal. In 2003 they released Waking The Fallen which was still metalcore, but started leaning a bit more toward the metal side.

Are you serious calling these guys emo? Emo is Dashboard Confession and anything else sad teens listen to while they cry about being a middle class white kids. These guys are musicians, actual musicians. Just because you don’t like how they look is a horrible reason to hate a band. And if you don’t like metal, then why are you even looking at this post? Get a life and quit whining you all sound like a bunch of emo kids.

geetard, GOOD ONE!!! How is their music not metal? So is Killswitch Engage, Bullet for my Valentine, and He is Legend not metal too? Get off your high horse and stop thinking that there can’t be mainstream metal bands.

  25. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:18

Emo is called as such because it is EMOtional music. That is where the term emo comes from. It is music that makes the listener feel very emotional about the horrible things in life. It is slow, sad music (PERIOD)

@24 Why is the sky blue? Why does Bon Jovi still make albums? How did Bush get elected? How did he det re-elected? Why would someone use the name Fairly Thick Penis?
For those of us with lives. We don’t care, we don’t control it, it doesn’t affect us.

    October 27th, 2007 | 05:24

    @#27

No, all music stirs emotions in people. Emo music only stirs depressing emotions in people.

Emo music can be cured by taking Zoloft or Lexapro.

  31. Tang
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:25

The *term* emo comes from the word emotional, but it’s gone so much farther than that. It’s no longer a genre of music, but a type of subculture as well. This, though, is not emo. Avenged sevenfold is much more Hard rock or Alt metal.

    @Youralldumb

All questions have answers, my friend.

The sky is blue due to Rayleigh scattering. Bon Jovi still makes albums because his record label pays him to. Bush was elected by winning an election. He was re-elected the same way. Someone would use that name to describe their anatomy.

My question was, why are these men wearing mascara?

  35. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:32

@27 Let me repost this for you:
It is music that makes the listener feel very emotional about the horrible things in life. It is slow, sad music (PERIOD)
Read the whole thing and then comment. Every music invokes a emotion, are you seriously asking that question? I don’t even know what else to tell you.

@28 Don’t be mad at them because they have more of these then you:
    Musicial Talent
    Money
    Fame
    Women
    Friends
Seriously, The album is good. That’s all that matters, if it’s not your kind of music then fine. But don’t be ignorant and homophobic because you have nothing better to do. Your probably one of those people that sings “Sieze the Day” into your comb and loves it. Then when people see you have the cd, you say its your sisters or something. If you don’t like it why are you so eager to look up info on them?

  36. Barry

I’m not familiar with this reference: “Your probably one of those people that sings “Sieze the Day” into your comb and loves it. Then when people see you have the cd, you say its your sisters or something.”

Can you give any details on “Sieze the Day”?

    October 27th, 2007 | 05:37

    @FTP
1st anybody that walks around talking about their anatomy is probably trying to convince themselves.
2nd Did you even get the point of my message? It’s called deeper meaning. It’s called quit whining about what other people do and live your own life.
3rd It’s sad when you have to S-P-E-L-L things out for people.

  40. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:39

@38 it’s one of their popular songs.

  41. Fairly Thick Penis
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:40

    @Youralldumb

    1) It was simply an expression of what I see when I look down. Don’t be jealous.

    2) “It’s called quit whining about what other people do and live your own life.” And yet, this music is all about whining.

    3) You wouldn’t have to if you explained things clearly the first time.

1)Really!!! still talking about your member, are you 5?
I know what i got and i don’t care about yours. Look down and keep telling yourself it’s not the size of the ship, it’s the motion in the ocean. And know it takes a long time to cross the atlantic in a row boat.
2)Listen to the cd and give me one lyric where they whine. I’ll save you time. Your thinking of a different genre. GET A CLUE!!!
3)Anyone that has an IQ above a salted peanut got what i was referring too. Read more, get some real insight and come back when you have something interesting to add.

  49. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 05:55

@47 Thank you for having some real insight!!! I fully agree. It’s just music. Listen to it and then love it or hate it. Just don’t bash the artist for looking a certian way. You listen to music, i don’t care if you band wears pink tu-tus and skips while they play their instruments. If it’s good music i’ll listen to it.

  52. id_
    October 27th, 2007 | 06:02

Cuz thats the current fashion statement. Tight clothing and circles around your eyes. Its not emo, its not meal. Its meagerly goth if anything. This band doesn’t create anything musically that hasn’t been done before and better. Plus their fans are idiots, thats why I don’t like ‘em

  53. rabinowitz
    October 27th, 2007 | 06:06

    @#51

They wear mascara as part of an attempt to create a “look” that they can use as part of a larger image. Many bands do this when their music may not be strong enough to gain a wide acceptance with the public and enables the band not to have to depend on their music alone.

A popular example of this would be the rock band “KISS”.

  54. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 06:07

@ftp Really, you learned nothing? Sad, so very sad! What happened to reading and getting real insight? To complex for you, start with a easy book like Hop on Pop, and work your way up. Someday you’ll be a big boy and have real discussions. I think sesame street is on you don’t want to miss “elmo’s world”. Run along and let the big people talk now and if your good i think there might be a pudding pop in your future. So very sad, Good Bye.

  55. Youralldumb
    October 27th, 2007 | 06:12

@52 There is no original music get over yourself. And i’m almost sure that you don’t have many friends with that attitude. You really wouldn’t be friends with people over music, it’s so trivial. Good luck finding anyone to be friends with. I don’t believe anyone of the fans of Avenged Sevenfold offered to be your friend. Your not that cool. FRIEND!!!

and if you are a musician, there must be jealous present. as a7x are in the spotlight, and you aren’t?

these guys are even being played at freaken hockey games…usually you just hear good old rock n roll being played at hockey games… :)

Is it me or is “YourAllDumb” the only one here that is still trying to defend this band and the emo movement??

Personally, i think emo is just a fashion phase that will die out in the near future once someone else comes up with a better idea. And it will fade away because that is just the way the cookie crumbles, the hippies said they will never go away, it took awhile but they moved on. In the end, there are going to be a lot of sad youth wishing they could wash away the emo tattoos they got, close up the stretched piercings they have, all because being emo will no longer be “hip”.

    @LD

You are so right. I have two piercings I wished I had never gotten. One was my right nipple, it hurt so bad when I had it done and it actually decreased the sensitivity and the other was what is commonly referred to as a “Prince Albert”.

Well, one night during some rather passionate lovemaking, the ring of my Prince Albert got caught on the threads of a woollen blanket on the bed. Not noticing it immediately, the last thrust I made was the most painful one of my life. And the amount of blood that flowed from my ripped member was almost sickening.

Needless to say, it ended the evening on a down note, and I haven’t pierced another part of my body since then.

    Emo-trash-metal? WTF?!

My red eye caught this scary looking young man in the front, sporting a Motorhead t-shirt - automatically attributing a flabbergasting amount of credibility to the band; nobody wears such attire unless they are well versed in the art of rock ‘n roll. Everybody now: R-E-S-P-E-C-T…

@79 If you think down on them for “selling out” that is very sad. That is the nature of the music industry. Name one musician that wouldn’t take the chance of making music and getting paid for it. Musicians get into it for the love of music, but they stay to pay the bills. Anyone in thier position would do the same.

To all of you who are bad mouthing bands like this, if you don’t like them move on and get over it nobody really gives a rats arse what you think because you are clearly small minded idiots who have got nothing better to do than sit behind your computer screen bad mouthing people who are making something of their lives with the skills that they have…..I don’t see your albums on the shelves of local music store.

To those of you who are bad mouthing the sub-culture commonly known as EMO, take a look around you will find that emo, goth mosh and anything alternative is as common as you chavs who think its cool to sit on street corners with your bottle or white lightning stealing cars and mugging old women, only difference is most of the goths and emos i know dont steal cars and dont mug old women and generally are in much less trouble with the police than the chavs, which in my opinion are the scum of society so take your pick which would you rather have the emos and the goths and the make up wearing guys who stay out of trouble or the chavs who will steal your car and mug your grandmother.

Simple matter of it is those of you bad mouthing anyone or anything that you clearly don’t know that well are small minded little pricks who need to get out away from their computer into the big wide world and experience some REAL LIFE you never know you might actually enjoy it.

Rant over now and thanks to those who posted torrent links

Avenged Sevenfold were originally Metalcore, and after their first album they said that they wanted one album with mainly screaming (First album, Sounding The Seventh Trumpet), then one album with around half screaming and half singing (Second album, Waking The Fallen), then an album with all singing (Third Album, City Of Evil)… The new eponymous album kinda follows on from City Of Evil in that it doesn’t have any screaming, but as always the style has changed… They aren’t sell-outs just because they changed their style, they said from the start that this is what they were going to do! It’s not for the money, it’s because that’s what they’ve wanted to do for around 7 years now…

Mascara: Why do they wear mascara? Weeell, why not? They are a Metal/Rock/Hard Rock/Alt Rock/Alt Metal/Whatever band, many bands in those genres have a dark image often involving make-up… as with any rock/metal band, if they wore boring clothes or chav clothes or something they wouldn’t be anywhere near as popular… it’s not because their music is bad, it’s just that they wouldn’t fit in and be accepted as role models if their clothes didn’t match their music, at least to a certain extent…

Emo? No, heck no… Emo derived from the subgenre of punk, Emotive Hardcore… bands like Saetia in the late ’90s were classed under this genre… (they personally thought the genre was a loada rubbish), and the genre kind of described music that provoked alot of emotion when listened to… obviously lots of music that isn’t “emo” can do that too, probably why they thought the genre was so useless… Anyway, the genre gradually warped into meaning, music like Fall Out Boy (Do they even sing about emotive/emotional things???) and feminine guys with make-up and dark fringes… pretty much… Avenged Sevenfold are NOT emo… their songs are obviously emotional, as most music is, but their style of music is metal, not pop-rock-nonsense… People who say they’re whiney are just idiots who listen to one of two of the Avenged Sevenfold singles and assume that all of their music is the same… The music they release as singles is what appeals to most people! Listen to the albums! Yeah, the odd song might seem a bit poppy and get annoying when over played, like Beast And The Harlot, and maybe you don’t like Seize The Day because it’s “Emo”, but even Seize The Day isn’t that whiney lol… Listen to the whole City Of Evil album and see if you still think they’re emo and whiney. Songs like Strength Of The World prove that they are extremely good musicians and NOT emo or whiney.

The new album… as with most if not all Avenged Sevenfold music, it takes quite a few listens to get into the songs, and at first the album seems kinda bland and a bit samey throughout, but after maybe 10 listens or so, it really grew on me… they’ve grown a lot as musicians, and some of the stuff in the new album is awesome… I really like the kinda country stuff, as well as all of the metal and it’s obvious that they don’t care about the people who want to stick them in a certain genre… Avenged Sevenfold do what Avenged Sevenfold want to do, they aren’t constrained by their genre, if they want to use auto-tune (like in “Lost”) they’ll use auto-tune, if they want to write poppy choruses, they will…

I hope that’s clarified that they are most definately not emo… I don’t really care if you don’t like the music, but don’t dislike it because you think they look feminine or emo… emo is a wayyyy over used term right now… it’s like, you wear anything black, or any kind of make up and you’re termed emo… I even got called emo a while ago purely because i was wearing jeans… I was like.. “eh, whaaat?”.. Aaand they definately aren’t of teh man-man persuasion anyway, most of them have girl friends actually…

Oh yeah and they’re awesome live…

Finally, why can’t you swear in this? D:

Thanks to pheenix and joshuaMH1 for posting. And to everyone else. Back off. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions and what they like is none of your damn business. If you don’t like this band why are you on this page? I like them but I have to point out that they’re not emo. My Chemical Romance is emo. Also City Of Evil isn’t their best. I hope my spelling and grammar are correct too. Apologies if they’re not but I’m not bloody Stephen Fry.

Yeah, wtg Cameron, U agree with all ya said actually. These guys are pretty diverse and there aren’t many band that have the gonads to try new stuff n be who they want to be, too many bands fit themselves in a genre and never venture beyond that. These guys arent for the faint of heart, if you have not appreication for REAL music, you’ll be clueless when u listen to this. They’ve gone thru some changes, worked at their craft and in actuality they’ve changed considerably since its first album, which was characterized as very heavy, to being more of a hard rock type band. Anyways, thats my 2 cents worth!
