I prefer common sense. Never had a virus (yes, I scan in safe mode sometimes to check) on my laptop for over a year. No programs running in the background slowing your computer down either :o)

Avg detected a legitimate windows file as a trojan causing failure to retart normally on some PC’s.They fixed it in a few hours although it was to late for some PC’s and less techy users which most of users are ,causing them to lose data.Avg is a enemy of p2p anyway.

avast is the worst anti-virus and in 2nd place (of worst) comes norton.

AVG fu**ed up other language versions of Windows - they identified a key windows file as a virus and when removed Windows won’t boot - BSOD…usual BS

    Quoting someone else:

“A recent update to the free AVG 8.0 Virus Scanner has resulted in a critical Windows XP system file called user32.dll being falsely identified as infected. Removal of this file results in not being able to bootup your system. This problem only affects Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish language versions of Windows XP, and there is an official fix available here ( http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1576 ), and here ( http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1577 ) if you don’t have an XP installation CD.”

#6 and #1 You have to crack Windows Product Activation Check, try using and bootcd like MiniPE and patch your system.

@ 10 - yah not as good as McAfee like when it identified explorer.exe as a virus right - now that’s a REAL AV - -they don’t screw around with those piddly little files - they go for the gusto…just remove the OS and no virus possible…excellent thinking

I don’t know why people say Avast is worse.
Avast in my experience is really really good. Has a very low memory footprint.

Virus scanning wise, it has caught all the viruses that i manage to get on my USB stick from College. Not one virus has gotten onto my computer with avast on it.

kaspersky or nod32 is better than avast

    November 14th, 2008 | 04:18

After a scan with Avast on my notebook, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found 7 trojans (4 was the same strain). This should say all!
Also you can try SOLO antivirus. Small and fast Antivirus. Very small footprint.
Don`t look too much for “tests”. The companies pay money for a good test I mean.

@4 Agree, Avira is very good, the best of the “free” AVs out there..
And even though they say they won’t give support to the “free” version users, they do reply on questions with in a few hours. =)

Using Kaspersky, much better than avast.
Less false positives and better antivirus engine.
Bought legit ver. for a year, and I’m happy with it.

#6: restart in safe mode and look for a new crack on the web for your version of windows.
Or install XP Corporate which does not require activation.

Avast is one of the best virus scanners - much better than norton/kapersky/avg.

pay for avira is ok too, but not the free one.

Avast is good. It picks-up waaaaay more questionable stuff than Norton or McCafee. The only problem is the number of false-positives.

Been using Avast Home (the free edition) for about 4 years now. Never had a problem or a virus, and I go ocassionaly to some questionable sites : ). Switching to different skin, disabling sounds and enabling quiet autoupdates i a MUST though.

    #10 (’antivirus’):

Get your head out of your 4rse before spouting such know-nothing cr4p. A simple googling of ANY antivirus-app-comparison site will show you that Avast comes quite high in the rankings (third at http://www.av-comparatives.org/).

Personally, i use Avira Premium - I switched from AVG free a while back…

@46, right click on the blue avast taskbar icon, click in program settings, and then go to the sounds tab in the settings panel that pops up. You can now disable all sounds or click on the sounds settings section and manually pick which ones you want to turn off. Note: Clicking on the sounds settings just takes you to the windows sounds settings, there is an avast section in there. If you have Vista you can just right click on the speaker in your taskbar and select sounds to get to the same place.
