Autism The Musical 2007 FESTIVAL DVDRip XviD-TheWretched

One of the best documentaries of last few months was released by group TheWretched. Autism: The Musical is a festival movie coproduced by HBO which means it didn’t have global screenings and it’s still pretty unknown, but critics and awards won at these festivals can’t be wrong: if you’re interested in this topic, it will be a really interesting watch for you.

Director Tricia’s Regan’s riveting documentary follows five different families, participating in The Miracle Project (a theatre program created specifically for children with special needs) as their kids write and perform their own musical production. The film is as much about the parents of autistic kids as it is about the kids themselves. How does one communicate with a child who won’t speak? What do you do when your kid only sleeps two hours per night? How do you cope with a world that has little use or compassion for kids that are so different? These are only a few of the questions that the parents must deal with, questions illustrated by a series of almost painfully honest and blunt encounters.

@4 What a lighter, brighter world we would live in if people like you were strangled at birth.

Better still, with the help of caring multinationals like Monsanto ;-) , you could be eugenically bred out of existence.

I drive special needs kids to school and they are without exception truly loveable and remarkable. But I had to overcome my own prejudices and fears to find that out.

Let me be the first to say (hopefully in a mature manner) that you are brainwashed. I’m sorry, but trying to put your subjective morals on other people crosses MY line. Even if I were moral I wouldn’t see any reason why autistic kids would be a worse target for jokes than any other kind of person on this planet.
You don’t know these kids either, and feel sorry for them only because they are kids and look pathetic. Are these really your reasons to love someone?

And by trying to put your own moral values as the objective truth in my and others faces, you offend me more than anyone could ever do by making jokes about me having Aspergers syndrome, which actually is a mild form of autism.
You always offend people no matter what your argument is, and it only makes you a hippocrite to complain about it.

And isn’t ironic that this TV musical, which only real purpose is to be sentimental and make us care about the kids in it, wouldn’t be appriciated at all by the kids themselves since they are completely anti-social and unaware of other peoples feelings?
By some peoples definitions, these kids are actually evil.

  23. choskins
    May 16th, 2008 | 22:29

Actually, my son has cerebral palsy, but that wasn’t the basis of my comment.

If you don’t think that a child who was born with a disability and had no choice in the matter is a worse target than someone else, then I feel sorry for you brother. That’s all I’ll say on the topic.

Thanks for the upload. I’ll definitely enjoy watching it.

  24. Derek
    May 16th, 2008 | 22:34

Who is loving someone because they are autistic? You are apparently hating them because they are though? Why? To label them as “evil” is stupid. You think it’s ok to generalize all autistic kids and make fun of them for things out of their control? That is in a nutshell unjust discrimination, much like racism.

I don’t know what this documentary is about, nor do any of us really know it’s worth until we actually watch it. But the talents that can be displayed in a musical performed by autistic kids are definitely there. There are autistic children out there that can hear a Mozart song and recite it back on piano right there on the spot with no practice, you don’t think people would find that interesting?

  25. Transcendent
    May 16th, 2008 | 23:08

    #25 choskin
However you value who’s feelings are more important, I don’t care. It’s for moral people to argue with eachother who’s moral values are the most moral…

    #26 Derek
It’s not discrimination if it’s true. You can’t say a black man is worthless just because he’s black, but you can say that someone is crippled because they have no legs.

And I didn’t say they were evil. I’d say the same thing I said about them about myself; by some peoples definitions and moral values, I am evil.
But I don’t care about their worthless emotion based moral values anyway.

And I definately don’t hate the kids. I prefer them to most of humanity, since they are smarter and probably incapable of having moral values.

To comment on Transcendent’s thoughts: You say, “And isn’t ironic that this TV musical, which only real purpose is to be sentimental and make us care about the kids in it, wouldn’t be appriciated at all by the kids themselves since they are completely anti-social and unaware of other peoples feelings?” I have a nephew that is autistic and I helped care for him for quite some time when he was younger. For starters, autistic people are not completely anti-social. They simply are born differently and have a different way of communicating. Go to this link and watch this autistic woman explain “her language”. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc Second, I don’t think this film is just to make us feel sentimental. I think it is to give people and parents of autistic children HOPE. There are so many horrible things in this world, all we can have is hope and faith.

    May 17th, 2008 | 01:24

Transcendent- What is true(as you say)? They are innocent just like black people are. Just because they are different(that’s all they are) does not give you the right to try and harm them, even if it is just jokes. Also you say this–

“And I definitely don’t hate the kids. I prefer them to most of humanity, since they are smarter and probably incapable of having moral values.”

This is just flat out wrong, you have absolutely no understanding of what autism is. They are actually more cabable of forming their OWN moral values as they become adults, were most of society and kids take their values from the people around them.

I just thought I would put this out there.
When I was in grade school there was an autistic boy that was about 14 or 15 and he always road on the front of the bus. Anyway, there is one instance when the rest of the bus was acting rather brutish with cursing and the bus driver stopped the bus and he was 6′8″ and he looked at everyone behind the boy in the first row and said, “If you do anything that is demeaning to your own life and makes he (gentile rubbing the boy with autisms back) uncomfortable I will through you off this bus.” I guess the point that I am trying to make is that sometimes people with that disability can’t completely understand there seriousness of some situations and can be miss led into acceptable and unacceptable.
I tell you that was the greatest bus driver ever. Not only was he a professional clown but a sub-teacher and roller skating rink owner.

Autism seems to be the flavour of the month, everywhere I look I see something about authism. Now attention for things like this is good, but over-exposure works against it. By flooding people with a subject, some of them will stop caring and be indifferent (think “terrorism”). Too much is never a good thing.

There are always people who get JOY and PLEASURE out of other people’s problems, misfortunes, disabilities. It is deep insecurities that disguises as strength and power. (True happy people have no need at feeding off the pain of others)

However, celebrating the pain of others is a skill that, in time, becomes extremely difficult to unlearn. And then, later in your life you realize that it easily turns against you… there’s no distinction. And you get easily entangled into a downfall of self-loathing and pain.

Everything you feel for others, in reality extends only to the mirror image of yourself.

This is the theory… life will deliver the practice.

Life. Some people are unpleasant and some aren’t. After spending years working with (and alongside) people with differing levels of ability I’ve found just as many people with ‘disabilities’ who have been total tossers, as I have working/living with the ‘able-bodied/minded’. That is what being human is all about. Don’t make the patronizing mistake of letting someone off the hook just ‘cos they have a disability!!
