Carriers in Europe have not been unlocking iPhones out of choice. In Germany, a court ruled in favor of Vodafone, which had sued to demand that T-Mobile open the iPhone to other providers. In France, Orange is required by law to offer an unlocked iPhone. In the UK, where O2 launched the iPhone, the device is still sold locked.

Those distant clicking sounds are Apple’s iPhones being unlocked in Europe. On Wednesday, mobile provider Orange began selling unlocked iPhones, without a long-term contract, for the translated price of $1,106. T-Mobile is already offering unlocked iPhones in Germany.

Orange stores stayed open late Wednesday night to kick off the sale of locked and unlocked iPhones. As unlocked devices, the iPhone can connect to carriers other than Orange, a unit of France Telecom. Didier Lombard, France Telecom CEO, had promised earlier this week that Orange’s unlocked price would be lower than the unlocked price T-Mobile is charging in Germany — about $1,471.

Court Decision in Germany

When locked to a service plan, the purchase price in France is $589. Orange will unlock any iPhone that has been purchased with a 12- or 24-month contract for $148 more during the first six months. After that, French law stipulates that unlocking be done for free.

The carriers have not been unlocking the phones out of choice. In Germany, a court had ruled in favor of Vodafone Group PLC, which had sued to demand that T-Mobile open the iPhone to other service providers. The suit was based on a German law prohibiting retailers from requiring consumers to buy one product in order to get another.

In France, carriers are required by law to offer unlocked phones. In the UK, where O2 launched the iPhone, the device is still sold locked.

In the U.S., the number of iPhones that have been unlocked by hacking might amount to more than early estimates. According to news reports, Apple executives said last month that about 250,000 of the 1.4 million iPhones sold in the U.S. have not yet been registered with the only official carrier, AT&T.

But that proportion of unlocked phones is low compared to Orange’s breakdown. Chris Hazelton, an analyst with industry research firm IDC, said that as many as 60 percent of Orange’s subscribers use unlocked phones. He noted that the carrier waited until the last minute to reveal the pricing details for an unlocked iPhone.

aAF (Aggressive Archive Force) bring us a nice documentary which you can watch with family and friends. For me, after “Farce of the Penguins” these penguin documentaries aren’t interesting anymore.

Group DvF bring us an interesting release. I personally haven’t heard about this film but from the ratings it seems to be an average horror.

Pomona (CA) – When TG Daily editor, Humphrey Cheung, captured some video of the inventor of the KillaCycle crashing at Wired NextFest, it raised a few eyebrows, and not just about safety concerns. The KillaCycle is an all electric motorcycle capable of amazing acceleration. 0-60 times are less than 1 second, but there’s a reason for this high performance. The battery technology inside the motorcycle is what gives its electric motor the real oomph.

The Killacycle previously used 165 lbs, or 990 cells, of A123 Systems nanophosphate lithium-ion batteries. The new battery system incorporates 1210 cells and now weighs 186 lbs. These tiny power sources are all chained together in an undisclosed sequence of parallel and series links, resulting in an unknown voltage. They were able to provide the motorcycle with enough power to set a quarter-mile world record for any batter-powered vehicle. The sub-8 second runs were completed at a recent drag racing event sponsored by Harley-Davidson. When everything was fully charged, the equivalent energy of a 500 hp gasoline engine surged through the electric bike (more than most high-end V8 engines), accelerating it to 168 mph in just 1,320 feet. The previous battery solution gave it 350 hp. The bike also has a new 27 inch tire and new gearing.

According to a press release by KillaCycle, “The spectators didn’t clap or cheer [when the run was completed], but, simultaneously, let out a revenant, hushed, low-pitched ‘whooooa’ when the board lit up. They too were completely awed and nonplussed by the historic event that we all had just witnessed.”

The team completed two runs to make it official. The second run was a little slower, at 7.991 seconds. However, the KillaCycle has now been officially declared the fastest battery-powered vehicle on the planet, at least in the quarter mile. A video of the fastest run can be seen on YouTube.

Now thats what I call speed!
