ASUS unveiled subnotebooks Eee PC 901 and 1000
Asus kicked of Computex 2008 with the Eee PC 901, the Eee PC 1000 and the Eee PC 1000H. The product family is quickly evolving from once was a cheap sub-$300 notebook to a trendy gadget that is expected to hit mainstream notebook prices. Also on display is a WiMax-equipped EeePC 901 that could become available in the U.S. as soon as the WiMax confusion clears up and a broadband network becomes available in more areas. Joining the widely anticipated and already previewed Eee PC 901 with an 8.9” screen, Asus also launched two 10” models – the Eee PC 1000 and 1000H.
Detailed specs other than the screen sizes were unavailable from Asus in the U.S. at the time of this writing, but leaked information from Taiwan suggests that at least the 1000H model will come with a 10” or 10.2” screen, Linux or Windows XP, Intel’s Atom processor and SCH chipset, up to 2 GB of DDR2 memory (the maximum supported by SCH), up to 5 hours of battery time an 80 GB hard drive as well as a weight that is slightly above three pounds.
While the 1000 models appear to be a reaction to MSI’s Wind notebook, the focus of Asus’ announcements is certainly on the 901 model. Equipped with an 8.9” screen up to 20 GB flash memory, and an Intel Atom Z520 1.33 GHz processor, the notebook is expected to launch in the $600 to $650 range, which means that the 10” model could break the $700 mark. Asus also has a working demo of an Intel Atom-based WiMax Eee PC 901. Asus is offering both 802.16e USB dongles as well as integrated WiMax solutions covering the frequency range between 2.5 and 2.7 GHz. The company did not say when the WiMax version will be available for purchase in the U.S.

Wow this is great, except mini-laptops are becoming more and more expensive…soon ill be paying as much for a low end laptop for a mini-laptop
So does this notebook support cd drives and burners?
I would like a really cheap laptop
comments erased???
eePc’s are just toooooooo expensive for the performance
looks ugly
It’s wrong to think of them purely as a budget item, although the linux cased ones will reduce prices as sales volumes builds M$ extortion will make that hard for windows based ee’s.
The advantages are really more about size and convenience than pure price. All those peripherals Cashvillan asked about could be hooked up but there isn’t a lot of point to that. I use mine because it’s pocket sized and hassle free, a portable communicator/typewriter and spreadsheet/database manipulator. For the basic tasks which make up 90% of most peeps work. Adding bulky software is as self defeating as hooking up peripherals, if there is heavy lifting to be done the data can be flicked on to a laptop or desktop depending where you are.
Laptops are just too bulky to be really convenient and the fact laptops don’t slip into yer kick means they pose security risks when they are misplaced or stolen.
I’m hoping eepc will take a leaf outta that green sub-100 job and have a sort of flexible monitor inserted so peeps can tip the thing on it’s side and read it like a book.
disposable pc’s aren’t far off.

informative
I guess i didnt realize how small they were
and btw all pc are disposable, you just have to wait 2 years and your pc is obsolete, cuz it will be slow as phuck, ecycle those crapppy old pc’s
I like eeePC and its growing is awesome. Bt this price growing is not good. And if its targeting the low price market and also developing country then they need to keep taht pricing matter more in mind. For my case i dont buy eee PC for its price, i bought it also for its size. So its screen growing matter never touched me. More over i would like to integrate more RAM and HD card/slot instead of buying new one.
I’ve just read the specs for the MSI Wind, it’s just about as good as the Asus eee1000(except the 802.11ndraft and shorter battery life). But it’s only $399!!!!
If Asus gets greedy it’s gonna get a hard slap on the face sales wise.
I was reading the article and was surprised by the level of English in it. I was like “Wow! RLS editors finally learned how to write properly!”
And then I saw the signature/reference.
Doh!
Any info on what their graphical processing power will be? Unless Intel’s Atom is sorta like a computer on a chip, the eeePC will have a GPU which will probly suck up some of its main memory. Other than that, 5hrs autonomy still sounds kinda low, I’m sure they could push it a bit further than that, what with the new battery techs coming out the pipe soon. Anyways, good news this.
The GPU will most probably be a Intel GMA 950 but who knows it may also be the GMA X3100.. what I wanna know is what resolution the new screens support.
Anyways, if I were to buy a Atom based lappy I’d probably go for the Zepto Notus A12. That beeing said I probably wont buy one, I’d rather wait for i-phone like cellphones with the atom and linux (there are rumors) and buy a fast laptop with a decent LED backlit screen.
i mean who is stupid enough to by half a woking notebook for the price of a real notebook…dead end street my 2 cents
