@17 "josepts" That is an awesome idea, if the flash chip is EEPROM then it may be possible to add this afterwards in early version before Asus catches wind of it being a good idea.

While another user tried to shoot you down by citing Hiren's, Hiren's is great, when you have your CD Library with you, but even better is not needing to mess with media to correct an issue.

so if said motherboard has a video card and sound card already on it, you are pretty much set. just throw it in a case with a power supply done deal might wanna a hard drive but you could use a flash drive to. this has potential

To the person who called it useless, you're useless, say your windows crashes and will no longer boot and the only option you have left is to reformat, but your firmware linux, install ntfs-3g from the repos and recover all your files, plus it's like a lightweight live distro and you can set your hard drive to store extra user preferences on top of the distro, I like the idea of having a failsafe linux o/s.

As an OLD hacker, I recall when computers came with an OS in EEPROM, on the mainboard.

BTW, Microsoft filed sworn testimony, and Quarterly SEC reports, stating that Linux is over 26% of ALL Internet users, on ~70% of all servers...

Office is their main supporting product... Four years before Microsoft stomped out the original authors and issued Office as their own product, a small "Open Office" was created by forward thinking coders.

Microsoft is losing many battles on many fronts, proving that bribery and coercion do not work on free people in 164 nations!

You can simply use it 'as is', without EVER installing Windows. Embedding an OS makes for a very easy to rescue system.

I recall that, years ago, Microsoft went to all the hard disk manufacturers and demanded that the drive makers MUST include Windows on every disk (forcing system upgraders to purchase a second copy of Windows for NO reason). Most of the drive manufacturers sent Microsoft packing. This embedded distribution makes certain that there is a CHOICE for the user.

What with Google being quite dominant on the interweb, Yahoo shying away, and Apple inviting Intel into bed, this is just one more kick to Bill's balls.

I wonder what Microscum are planning, because we all know, they will not take this sitting down.

While I used to steal windows copies as well and cook up custom installs of XP PRO & Vista with Nlite & Vlite I quit doing even that as I was only teaching my friends and family to be Microscum dependent so now 2 months and 15 PC's with Ubuntu installs later I am as happy as I could be as I have kicked MS the hell out of my life for good. Every XP or Vista system I Dban and install Ubuntu on feels like I just kicked Bill Gates square in the nuts. Try it and see if you don't get the same feeling. Ubuntu Linux has a wonderful forum and community as well and people there will help you make the switch to the good side of the force, so quit serving evil and come on over and be a Jedi for good. Loss of users is the only way MS might realize what bastards they are but I doubt it. Vista ultimate $300 ( I can build a PC for that LOL) VS Ubuntu with 3D spinning cube and more eye candy than you can shake a stick for $0 uhh you do the math. www.ubuntu.com

I am curious to know whether or not this light weight version of Linux GUI is upgradeable or you can change its structure. Can I run a muiltiboot program in it to allow Windows Applications in it to run? Can you set it up to run as a server? Add Apache server?

I've been real stand-off-ish when it comes to getting a laptop or ever recommending a laptop but this doesn't sound too bad.

whilst I'm a fan of *nix and see this as a good thing, I have windows xp booting in under 20seconds on a years old p4 3.4ghz with 1gb of ram. I've been tempted to replace the HD with a flash drive which I guess could cut another 5+ seconds from the boot time.

Vista is far slower (not on the xp pc above, that's never had anything but xp) than xp on every pc I've tried it, inc a E8500 c2d and a QX9770 c2e running at 4ghz with 4gb of ram.
