Asus equips all motherboards with Linux

Asus is to fit its entire range of motherboards with the company’s Express Gate version of Splashtop Linux. Splashtop boots from a Flash chip on the motherboard in a matter of seconds and is designed to run a small suite of applications including Firefox, Skype and instant messaging. The Linux-based software will be extended immediately to the new P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-WS, P5Q3 Deluxe and P5Q-E series motherboards, and Asus has pledged to produce a further million Splashtop motherboards per month. Part of Splashtop’s appeal is that it complements rather than replaces Windows, offering users the option to run a choice of operating systems.

Its low power consumption and Wi-Fi support also make it an attractive option for notebook manufacturers. Asus, a long-term Linux stalwart, is widely seen as a pioneer of cut-down systems running the open source operating and has enjoyed commercial success with its increasingly popular Eee PC. “In response to great user feedback our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard product portfolio, starting with over one million motherboards per month,” said Joe Hsieh, general manager of Asus’ motherboard division. “Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance, and Express Gate has made that possible.”

This sucks! Anyway linux is free so you can install it whenever you want! But Windows.. you have to pay for it!

@5 Of course not! But its nice to have genuine software for free! Right? If they want to offer something for free then why not Vista bundled with the PC! Offering linux is useless for the consumer!

    Asta la vista !

    May 17th, 2008 | 12:32

@LOL - Offering lightweight OS along with Vista = not really that useless, you want to just talk to someone = you don’t have to wait for vista to load, i’d say it’s quite convenient.
Yeah, i know that you can install linux. NEWSFLASH - most people don’t give a sh!t and won’t install it, but if they will already have the choice to boot up vista or linux - they will try the other one and some of them will like it.

You *cannot* install Splashtop linux yourself. It’s an “instant on” feature built into your motherboard.

And because it’s built-in it loads in split seconds, unlike viS(HI)Ta

“You *cannot* install Splashtop linux yourself. It’s an “instant on” feature built into your motherboard.”

    *why not*
If your bios allows booting from memory cards/usb sticks and you put Slashtop into one.

I almost exclusively use my computer with only firefox so if I had one of the new asuses, I would probably would need to boot with the hd something like once a week only. They should have come up with that years ago, but good that its now being implemented, hopefully others follow asus.

    Too bad.
Looked quickly into the matter, theres one being developed called coreboot, too, if someone is interested.

what would be really cool is if that linux had anti spyware/malware/viri tools so if windows dies, you can use the linux with its tools to fix it…

people complaining about vista are too cute… mom and dad won’t let you buy some RAM? still at 256/512mb?? aww…

    cute.

As for Express Gate, I am definitely getting that. Although Vista SP1 loading times are ridiculously low on my system, it would be fun to bypass everything and just turn on my computer in 5 seconds to check the weather or my emails real quick before going to work

oh and josepts… you can use Hiren’s Boot CD (free download). It has hundreds of tools in it, including all the anti-everything you’d ever need

“…not everyone belives you need a new pc every 6 months”

My PC is almost 3 years old (parts release date) and it still handles Vysta like a champ.

This seems very useful though; I’d like it if you could get some kind of BIOS update (and chip add-on) that would allow this on existing MoBos.

It’d make me happy if I could boot my PC in 5-10 seconds and check my email before heading out.

whilst I’m a fan of *nix and see this as a good thing, I have windows xp booting in under 20seconds on a years old p4 3.4ghz with 1gb of ram. I’ve been tempted to replace the HD with a flash drive which I guess could cut another 5+ seconds from the boot time.

Vista is far slower (not on the xp pc above, that’s never had anything but xp) than xp on every pc I’ve tried it, inc a E8500 c2d and a QX9770 c2e running at 4ghz with 4gb of ram.

I am curious to know whether or not this light weight version of Linux GUI is upgradeable or you can change its structure. Can I run a muiltiboot program in it to allow Windows Applications in it to run? Can you set it up to run as a server? Add Apache server?

While I used to steal windows copies as well and cook up custom installs of XP PRO & Vista with Nlite & Vlite I quit doing even that as I was only teaching my friends and family to be Microscum dependent so now 2 months and 15 PC’s with Ubuntu installs later I am as happy as I could be as I have kicked MS the hell out of my life for good. Every XP or Vista system I Dban and install Ubuntu on feels like I just kicked Bill Gates square in the nuts. Try it and see if you don’t get the same feeling. Ubuntu Linux has a wonderful forum and community as well and people there will help you make the switch to the good side of the force, so quit serving evil and come on over and be a Jedi for good. Loss of users is the only way MS might realize what bastards they are but I doubt it. Vista ultimate $300 ( I can build a PC for that LOL) VS Ubuntu with 3D spinning cube and more eye candy than you can shake a stick for $0 uhh you do the math. www.ubuntu.com

What with Google being quite dominant on the interweb, Yahoo shying away, and Apple inviting Intel into bed, this is just one more kick to Bill’s balls.

I wonder what Microscum are planning, because we all know, they will not take this sitting down.

You can simply use it ‘as is’, without EVER installing Windows. Embedding an OS makes for a very easy to rescue system.

I recall that, years ago, Microsoft went to all the hard disk manufacturers and demanded that the drive makers MUST include Windows on every disk (forcing system upgraders to purchase a second copy of Windows for NO reason). Most of the drive manufacturers sent Microsoft packing. This embedded distribution makes certain that there is a CHOICE for the user.

As an OLD hacker, I recall when computers came with an OS in EEPROM, on the mainboard.

BTW, Microsoft filed sworn testimony, and Quarterly SEC reports, stating that Linux is over 26% of ALL Internet users, on ~70% of all servers…

Office is their main supporting product… Four years before Microsoft stomped out the original authors and issued Office as their own product, a small “Open Office” was created by forward thinking coders.

Microsoft is losing many battles on many fronts, proving that bribery and coercion do not work on free people in 164 nations!

To the person who called it useless, you’re useless, say your windows crashes and will no longer boot and the only option you have left is to reformat, but your firmware linux, install ntfs-3g from the repos and recover all your files, plus it’s like a lightweight live distro and you can set your hard drive to store extra user preferences on top of the distro, I like the idea of having a failsafe linux o/s.

so if said motherboard has a video card and sound card already on it, you are pretty much set. just throw it in a case with a power supply done deal might wanna a hard drive but you could use a flash drive to. this has potential

  34. LParker
    May 30th, 2008 | 04:32

@17 “josepts” That is an awesome idea, if the flash chip is EEPROM then it may be possible to add this afterwards in early version before Asus catches wind of it being a good idea.

While another user tried to shoot you down by citing Hiren’s, Hiren’s is great, when you have your CD Library with you, but even better is not needing to mess with media to correct an issue.
