Astronomers predict total lunar eclipse, visible across much of Canada

TORONTO - Astronomers predict a total lunar eclipse tonight that will be visible anywhere in Canada where the skies are clear.

The moon will appear when the Earth’s shadow begins to travel across the lunar surface at 8:42 p.m. Eastern time.

When the moon is completely hidden around 10 p.m., it could appear to be blood red or bright orange and later change to dark brown.

Although the eclipse will last for three hours, the best of the lunar pyrotechnics will only be visible for about 50 minutes.

A number of science centres, as well as individuals, are throwing free lunar parties tonight in several cities in Canada, offering telescopes for people to observe the eclipse.

In Toronto, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada is throwing a free sky party at the Ontario Science Centre, while a similar event has been set up in Calgary by the University of Calgary’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory. Any body who sees the eclipse make sure to comment !

It’s almost gone. East coast US.

Took a bunch of pictures, it’ll be nice to have them since this won’t be happening for a couple of years.

Also - Why is this on RLSlog? Quite random.

Sorry to the people who got clouded out. You missed an awesome opportunity.

Next time 2010? Hahaha, that’s just a few years from now. Even the leap year (29 days in February) we have this year is more rare.. Cool event, no doubt, but not THAT rare ;)

a round of applause for the solar system!!! nice job, and to all of those people who said ‘who cares’, 106 posts begs to differ. ha, i am sure for some of ‘us’ it was nice to get outside for once!

@cyder, if you think about it, statistically, one in sixty of us wont be around for the 2010 one (though of course i hope we all are), so the best policy is to enjoy every one as if it is your last! 29 days in feb, not bad, but this year it falls on a friday, so what is the difference, everyone still has to go to work (but i guess atleast because it is the last friday of the month, many will get paid and go out and party extra hard:D)

@7 Because Canada is full of “we have everything and you don’t” sort of people. They say these sort of things to make them feel more important then any other nation because they don’t have much in there meger, non-eventful, boring lives.

Just watch, some Kunt-adian will say “..But our dollar is worth more than yours” or some typically childish remark that they often sh*t out of their mouths.

    @ #115-120

That is just ridiculous that you posted your dumb thoughts 5 times in these comments. And each time you changed your comment a little.

How do you have so much spare time to be writing your useless thoughts on an internet forum 5 times?? Were you so afraid when it took a few seconds to appear that you thought you were being censored? So you changed a few words and reposted it?

By posting it so many times, you’ve actually made it less likely that anyone will read it, because now they will just think it is spam and ignore all 5 comments.

    Dumb kunt.

” Astronomers predict total lunar eclipse, visible across much of Canada”

Man this sounds stupid, ‘predict lunar eclips’, they didnt predict it, they knew it. And not only in Canada, but around the whole world.

Stick with releases, this makes you look dumb.

yep mate, in science we call this a predction, nothing is certain. as in, in an experiment, if we light the fuse on a stick of TNT, it might not necessarily explode

“located in pittsburgh and the eclipse is awesome, just came inside from watching it even tho its like 4 degrees outside”
    Try -40… lol

To Knightrider and every other person that put down Canada. The only reason that some of us Canadians thought that it was only visible here was because of the news report. They said that it’ll be visible across Canada. So a lot of us jumped to the conclusion that it was ONLY visible in Canada, (Similar to the upcoming Lunar eclipse, http://www.shadowandsubstance.com/2017/2017e.swf, which we’ll only be seen in mid-USA).

The news reports should have said that it’ll be visible across the world.

Everyone makes mistakes. Even those that discriminate people by their country.
