    Attention 64-bit Users:
Q: Is Aston compatible with a 64bit system?

A: The compatibility with the existing version of Aston is quite problematic. But Aston 2 will support it for sure.

Cool, might give this a try on my lappy, seems a bit better than windowsblinds, as above, any given this a try, what’s the feedback?

Its really good, at least it was when I last used it before I moved to vista. Unlike window blinds it is actually useful and more responsive than the standard windows GUI and doesnt hog memory or CPU.

This program is awesome. Only used it for 10 mintues but its already making my life easier.

I’ve had a few crashes when changing themes but normal stuff its working fine. No viruses btw.

    I like - http://themes.astonshell.com/578/
    Nice, simple and clean.

Wish it had more support for dual monitors, my secondary looks boring now.

    Definitely try this!

i used to use aston, but it created some problems for me. i have usb powered speakers on my laptop and the volume control on them calls on the shell (explorer.exe) to change the system volume; also i use function+page up/down to change the volume on my speakers which also calls on the shell. aston replaces the default windows shell with its own shell, aston.exe, so when i try to change the volume either of the two ways i previously stated it doesnt work.
there might be a way to fix this, but i have ye to find a workaround. a lot of the other keyboard shortcuts i used also did not work and i decided that i’d rather use the default shell to make using my laptop easier.
also, i would only recommend this app to the more experienced computer user. its not hard to install and use in a default state, but its not the easiest task to customize the shell to something personal and unique, and thats the whole point of using a shell replacement.

    May 27th, 2008 | 00:26

I have used an earlier version of this program, I liked it a lot. Cool designs and very useful shortcuts, however after I installed it I could no longer encode for DVD burning. It would encode but horribly bad, skips, pauses, audio out of sync to no audio at all…always something. Not sure it it was chewing up to much of my RAM or what but I had to uninstall and encoding was not an issue just like before (the installation of Aston).

Just my 2 cents, maybe this version uses less resources.

Well the key doesn’t work so its a waste of time if you want to buy it. Looks good though hope a proper key comes along. Though if your using 2 displays it might complicate your life after uninstalling. Changes the identification number of the monitor. While running this killed my ati catalyst drivers on XP 32 SP3..

Though for all that can not figure out how to register, all you do is right click on the blank part of the desktop and you’ll see Register…

  31. Mr Ryan
    May 27th, 2008 | 00:41

i tried aston 4-5 years ago and it somehow f’ed up my boot partition and became a huge headache. i’m strongly considering trying the new version though.

@30, bblean is awesome but way more involved to set up properly. i used it for a year or so before trying aston.

  34. texlix
    May 27th, 2008 | 01:26

If you think the key works set your clock date a couple months ahead, even in the aston options it still says unregistered, but after i register i do get a warning msg of some kind, goes by to fast to read though.

though if your worried about trojans just download it from the publisher and try using the key:/

Not a bad piece of kit but it took alot of effort changing my system to how i wanted it but if i have the time i will have another go.

  38. Sean
    May 27th, 2008 | 02:38

When it tells you to log off, restart the whole comp then when it comes back on, just right click the desktop and hit “Register”. Paste in the key and it works.

Well, I have been messing with this app a bit more, and I must agree with others.
DON”T WASTE YOUR TIME!!! Its crap, freezes whenever you try to change things, many crashes later and now it wont run at all. Its just not worth it!

  41. Sean
    May 27th, 2008 | 03:37

Hmm, it works well enough for me. I took off most of the stuff that were defaulted. Didn’t you say you were using 64? It did say it wasn’t perfect for 64 yet.

LOL @ people aren’t able to register.
“Oh no, it didn’t prompt me a form to register! I’m lost!”
You gotta be kidding me. Are you really… not that smart?!

LOL @ Virus Warning: get a proper anti virus program!

Nice program, nice themes, fast changing without rebooting.

But I uninstalled it because no native support for my second monitor and I don’t want to tinker (yeah, I’m lazy).

Here’s the solution for multi-monitor support:

so how does this program compare to the likes of windowblinds or litestep???

has anyone had experience with all of these programs?

i’m quite satisfied with my slightly old but working version of windowblinds, but i would never say no to a better or different alternative! so please enlighten me!

    May 27th, 2008 | 17:27

Doesnt matter if the prog sux or not. I think what is more important is that some people are reporting a Trojan Virus and some people say its clean.

Please report what virus program and version you are using if you say it has a virus and aslo the same for people that say they checkes and think its clean.

1/2 of us might need to switch to a better Virus scanner. I use Nod32 version 3 and have not downloaded this.

    May 27th, 2008 | 18:19

I use XP, have Kaspersky some version, no virus and I realy like it.

I used windowsblinks but I uninstalled it now, as this is alot cooler and nicer.

I have used it some hours now and it is realy userfreindly, ofc you need to know some computerskills, alså my 1200×800 widescreen is okej with it.

only drawback is that my mute and +/- volume doesnt work, but I never use them anyway.

  65. Bumfluff
    May 27th, 2008 | 18:48

Fast it is not, takes a good 10 secs extra at startup, slow screen redraws, about 3 secs to bring a file explorer window up which isnt alot but when youre used to it being instant and doing it 80 times a day…
Crashed each time i tried to get rid of the ‘EN’ keyboard icon.

  66. Gamias GR
    May 28th, 2008 | 01:12

It has a format capability inside.
Is it part of the Shell or it’s a malicious code?

  67. moose
    May 28th, 2008 | 01:43

Works OK on vista 32bit (ultimate) sp1.

Theonly things that seem broken are any plugins that use the sound (volume, analysers) none of them work at all for me.

Other than that is OK, not the best but much lighter than vistas desktop exporer that hangs on bootup for 20 seconds on login, this is instant. Shows how bloated windows really is.

Could do with a real explorer like interface though, like dopus but the desktop as well, but oh well.
