Armin Van Buuren – A State Of Trance 2007 (2CD)

No, this release needs absolutely no introduction. You either heard about Armin van Buuren and then there’s no need to convince you into downloading, or you don’t like trance at all and can skip this without longer thinking. I’ll choose the first option. :-) Enjoy this awesome music 2 months before the street date!

The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren’s State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world’s most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there’s an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called “on the beach”), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia’s “The Blizzard,” it’s pretty forgettable.

However, the second, more progressive disc (”in the club”) improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs “Miserere” and “Rush Hour.” It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi’s “Perspective” and Ronski Speed’s “The Space We Are.” As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy.

    April 10th, 2008 | 01:51

Just a shame Trance died years ago. Armin is a f*#king queer, not to mention being an absolutely terrible producer – thats why he pays someone else to do it or collabs with someone who will do the work for him. Hes a totall nub in that respect. I hope he dies soon.

“electronica”, hehe – a made-up word beloved of americans who like to stick all electronic and dance music into one little category.

Arbmand van buurito? oh dear, cheezy commercial naffness of the highest order. The only trance worth listening to is psytrance, and full-on psy has become a parody; just as cheezy as stuff like this.

Corto, that stuff you linked isn’t “real” trance, it’s psytrance which came after the euphoric-trance played by the likes of buuren. It’s the more western version of goa-trance. goa is great, as is dark-psy.

anon, lol carl cox real techno? carl cox plays cheezy gabba and house – even in the late 80’s when he was playing acid-house he still went for the more commercial stuff.

@MelC: Electronica is a blanket term for it in America. Guys he’s right. I’m an ex promoter and DJ and guess what.. America’s radio stations are controlled by a few people that feed you guys crap. In europe they listen to good music like DnB, Techno(the real techno not the blanket term noobs use), Trance, Progressive(which is what most americans think trance is), etc.

  54. infamousjeff
    April 11th, 2008 | 06:19

56: Tiesto may be the most popular but certainly not the most talented. I believe he’s more overrated than Paul Fukenold.

I think you just made a big mistake Martin. There is a new cd coming out April 22nd by Van Buuren, but it’s called Imagine. Here is the link.
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0014DC078/alaskajimcom03-20
Oh and for all of you saying people don’t know different types of electronic music in the US are wrong. I have a ton of friends that are all DNB DJ’s. Odi, J Smooth, to name a few. And they would kill someone for putting them in the same category with Trance and crap like that. We have all the same breakdowns as you guys over in Europe. Hardcore, Trance, DNB or Jungle, and Breakbeats. We don’t just classify everything under Electronica like you think. That’s just something the record stores do to put them in there own area but mixed up. And club classifies itself by one of the above, not all of the above… So that’s just ignorant comments of people who have obvously never spent a weekend partying in the NYC…

  57. MelC
    April 13th, 2008 | 01:44

John, you can clearly see on this thread that many americans DO classify everything under electronica (hey it’s ok, most of the world classes anything guitar based as rock). You and your friends don’t, and that’s cool but you have to realise you are in the minority. In europe and asia it’s the other way round – people call music by whatever genre it is and you would never hear the term “electronica” over there.

You merkins got any grime/dubstep yet? ;p
