Are rlslog rip-off sites ruining our reputation ?

Hey there everyone. My name is Mr. X of rlslog.net, editor since April 3 of 2007. My experience covers over 400 posts, most of them in the TV section. RLSLOG.net is the original, best and most popular scene news blog, complete with original articles including quality reviews. Being a 100K/day site we couldn’t have done 4,080 posts without the hard work and dedication of our whole team, and the support and loyalty of our commentators and readers.

I have been noticing, especially over the course of this year, the steady increase of sites that losers have the free time to create that simply mirror all of our content under their site name. Since we have an rss-based system, it makes it easier for the children who run their rogue sites to copy off our content under their name. Martin has tried to add a counter-measure to the RSS feed ‘this article has been published at RLSLOG.net - visit our site for full content.‘ but unfortunately losers continue to work-around this measure. This is a pathetic attempt at getting their own share of advertising revenue off of someone else who made the original article.

I would link to these sites in question, but that’s what the admins would want so instead I have created screenshots of the webpages so they won’t get the satisfaction of being linked from us in order to get a better google rank. I could only remember these two, but I remember visiting more I just have forgotten their urls. As well with just rlslog content rip-off sites, I have also noticed spin-off rlslog sites wherein the website authors get together a little team and try to copy our methods. Not only do they not have original reviews, a simple bot script could be doing all the work for them. Lately we have been seeing a rash of site-spamming in the comments themselves. If you want your site linked by rlslog, and if it does not suck there are proper avenues to go through, I suggest that you take this route.

    No.

What is the saying about plagiarism and flattery?

Anyway, if you’ve got half a brain you’ll find the best source for what you want. I did, no one told me about this site. I found it myself.

I’ve been to quite a few “release news” sites and none even come close to the rlslog. Keep up the great work!

those sites are a bit slower with releases, but at least they’re not plagued by ads like this site. and i hope this gets noted before this post is inevitably removed by the mods here.

I agree with #7 - the ads here, especially the ones which popup and take over the whole screen are really annoying.

Plus I’m interested in releases only, not news, or stupid videos.

I use newsgroups to do most of my downloading, and I’ve noticed thata whilst rlslog is good for getting info about releases, they can be out for hours (even days) before being posted here.

Some of these “spin off” sites seem to be updated with better content, no ads, and faster releases.

I don’t have any problems with ads on this site. I thought it was normal for everyone to be using Firefox these days.

These ripoffs don’t update content faster than rslog, as they are getting there stuff from here.

I will have loglar.net down pretty quickly. They have bogus registration info. I have already reported them to ICANN. Now, I am moving down the chain of command.

  19. October 14th, 2007 | 21:23

#7 - there are not that many ads at rlslog, i see 3 or 4 a page. yeah, this full page ad is little annoying, but it’s quite a must to keep the site going. many people think we’re making millions here, but that’s really not the case. there aren’t many advertisers who would like to spend their money on a “warez” site (aka people who prefer to steal than pay) :)

  20. jared1
    October 14th, 2007 | 21:23

One more thing, regarding the reputation of this site.

I think the editors are doing worse for the reputation with pointless posts which arent anything to do with scene releases, adding more ads all the time, giving us rubbish reviews like “I dont know this band, but they might be good”, and pigeon english.

  21. PG
    October 14th, 2007 | 21:26

First of all: The ads here can easily be removed using various tools like ABP for Firefox so if you don’t like ads, use such a tool.

Now, about rip-off sites… If they’re really a problem, just have them killed off, either by drowning them in junk traffic (the simplest way is to use the iframe trick) or by filing a piracy complaint against them with their ISP posing as MPAA or similar.

TRUE reputation that this site have and it IS have it!,
    simple can’t be desturbed…
ripoffs are so common and always was common that is simply the weakness of humans…
BUT..if there is some computer way to block this that would be simply nice.
i have an idea - you can post jpg-posts but with half transparent rlslog.net logo on it so everyone will know
where this came from originally - thats all i taught about.
but to the main question(Are rlslog rip-off sites ruining our reputation ?) the answer is:

    simply not. :)

i think under copyright laws that your original work is your property… so if they’re copying it and saying it’s theirs it’s copyright infringement. correct me if i’m wrong…

    October 14th, 2007 | 21:30

Why not add a small “rslog.net” watermark (near the edge so its not obtrusive) to images posted to the site. That way anyone copying the site would have to spend time cropping then rather than just a copy and paste.

Regarding ads….. pull up your pants and quite sucking on the teet that is microsoft and install firefox. I use kaspersky internet suite as well, I don’t even see adsense on sites.

But I just opine. The only thing wrong with this site are the gaper little kids whose balls haven’t dropped yet making completely inane comments.

I just want a movie from time to time, because I don’t always have time to hit the theater. I work about 15 hours a day on the puter. I don’t need to weed through a bunch of posts from 15 year olds who think they are cool. In fact “the scene” is just as childish as the inane comments made about it. Why not put your skills(debatable) to better use and do something useful for the web.

  38. Kaydee
    October 14th, 2007 | 21:44

I don’t like hearing that rlslog is making money through advertising off of the scene releases. That takes the file sharing genre to a different level, because then it is just plain stealing.

I know you’ll say that the site costs money to run, but unless you’ve set up a non-profit entity to run the site, there is the possibility of funds being used for purposes other than site upkeep. And that leads back to the staff making money off stolen warez, vidz, etc…

I don’t see any reason why you should worry at all, these sites won’t get anywhere just by copying everything. You’ve built up a userbase that is way better than theirs, even if they manage to “steal” a couple of thousand users per day, so what? At this rate they won’t come close to where you are.

I think you should add watermarks on the pictures, and maybe consider giving them less data via the RSS.

  45. shafy
    October 14th, 2007 | 21:49

if you complain about ads here it just shows you how dumb you actually are, i mean there is built in ad blockers in basically all Browsers, 6 year olds know how to use them. On another note, people who take credit for other peoples original work, is just so low, i dont even need to comment on it, because its pathetic lame and shows that the people behind it have too small brains to come up with anything remotely productive or interesting, so they leech and steal other peoples work. But i think we all know that RLSlog is genuine and all original. I get so pissed at loosers trying to copy. LONG LIVE RLSLOG, keep up the good work guys, you definitely run a good show here, and people know that.

    October 14th, 2007 | 21:59

1 - i never see a pop-up ad on rlslog. to not expect ads on a site like this is ridiculous.
2 - there’s nothing on rlslog that folks couldn’t actually find out for themselves if they were willing to do the legwork. complainers just illuminate their own laziness, nothing else.
3 - while some of us might be baffled at things like off-topic posts, posts of already-nuked releases, and comments made by juveniles, we should all be mature enough to ignore what we don’t like or what annoys us else we become exactly what we proclaim to hate.
4 - rip-off sites are likely going to increase, which in a way is a compliment, and should light a fire under rlslog’s respective butts to make sure their site is the highest of quality so their reputation can’t be ruined…by anyone else or by themselves.

    # 27 - “i think under copyright laws that your original work is your property… so if they’re copying it and saying it’s theirs it’s copyright infringement. correct me if i’m wrong…”

70% of RLSlog’s post content is plagiarism. Example:

“Well known cam release group CAMERA have give us Michael Clayton. This Drama/Thriller looks promising but I’d wait for at least a telesync. But if you really must watch this then go ahead.

Michael Clayton is an in-house “fixer” at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen’s dirtiest work at the behest of the firm’s co-founder Marty Bach. Though burned out and hardly content with his job as a fixer, his divorce, a failed business venture and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At U/North, meanwhile, the career of litigator Karen Crowder rests on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton’s firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach’s brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life.”

First 3 sentences belong to the post author; the rest is the official movie description - NOT written by anyone at RLSlog. And the movie IS NOT produced by RLSlog.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this site, but this whining about other sites stealing you …it is a bit silly.

i enjoy this site but c’mon guys… you run a site dedicated to info on ripped off material for free, and yet you’re upset that others are ripping off your material, which you in fact rip off, for the most part from other reviews written by others.

i’m not complaining, i just find it ironic that you’re upset with this trend. only the first paragraph of any tv or movie release is written by an author form rlslog (i don’t read the other section posts so i won’t speak to that).

yeah, it sucks that people are ‘ripping’ off your site, but seriously guys, you’re doing the same thing to others. don’t complain about it.

i’ll always come here for my info because you are excellent at what the site is meant for, providing up front and up to date info on scene releases!

btw - Sorku, someone is making money from all the adds so at least certain memebers of the staff are making a profit, otherwise, what’s the point of sinking in all the time it requires to run this site!!

Oh the irony of sites that copy a site’s news of people who copy applications to movies.

I think you should pretty much not complain about it, deal with it or no longer keep the site going.

Almost half the news bits about releases seem to no longer contain the torrent that the bit is talking about anyway. I have to be honest about what I am saying. Don’t get me wrong rlslog, I keep coming here because the news you report actually has a source and unlike SOME sites which report news items which sometimes are fantasy based with no source, yours so far has been genuine.

  66. edwin
    October 14th, 2007 | 22:04

Mr. X, you put yourself in a poor position to argue that you and the site are losing ad revenue because others are stealing your release information.

You are simply presenting info to web about scene releases, unless you have exclusive rights to that info, you can’t complain.

I said that before in the #rlslog channel, so lemme just repeat.

As you guys can see the “this article has been published…” prefix isn’t hindering other websites stealing your content. Once someone is able to implement the RSS Feed on their own site, it’s the easiest to just write a little script deleting the first few static words.

One solution might be to create a dynamic sentence in the beginning making it impossible for a bot to just add the content to the site. But that still leaves me with my own personal problem:

For people using a RSS Reader to stay informed whether there are any interesting news on rlslog.net it’s a pain in the a** to always have to skip over this annoying sentence.

Furthermore the “protection sentence security” is not really a security measure as the RSS feed doesn’t feature the full content article anyways - the sites ripping you off are NOT using the RSS feed to get their content.

I think you guys have to come up with a better way to protect your content (oh, the irony in talking about protecting content).

yeah, it’s kind of weird and ironic to be complaining when the scene is about this sort of thing. well whatever i hope you get the point and not try to twist it into something its not.

RLSLOG plz don’t use CopyPasta anymore.
Almost doing the same as the rip-off sites…

rlslog can’t watermark the images because they typically remote link to other hosted images and hence steal other sites’ bandwidth.

    Kind of ironic, huh?

They could use javascript to output the text or something to make the other lives harder.

And maybe block the /24 that the copying sites live on.

Eh, the only reason most of the traffic comes here anyway is to lazily grab the torrents/rapidshare you link to (which I’m surprised hasn’t gotten you screwed yet). They pretty much just serve the same purpose as vcdquality, only vcdquality updates faster and doesn’t pretend to be a “blog” *groan*. There’s a million other sites that serve that exact same function, so before they prop up on that high horse full of bad grammar, maybe they need to re-evaulate, ya dig?

On that note, some of the fun of this place is trying to decipher the nonsensical ramblings that accompany the releases this staff of illiterates post. I assume you become a writer here based on how many fragments of sentences you hammer out via mashing your face against your keyboard per minute.

Of my all time favorites though, “I review this game/movie/show I’ve never heard of, purely on the title and/or screenshot, then tell you how my day went, then tell you not to get it, then go on about how I like the color green” is my absolute favorite. It’s like my grandfather attempting to describe technology, although his rambling just eventually trails off and he falls asleep.

Who gives a partial sh_t about how the f_ck your contents are “stolen”. You are ret_rds and should know it… You are all the time writing about illegal material, for people like me, who don’t want to give money for ret_rded things like movies or stupid games.

Conclusion : post something useful for ret_rds like us instead of posting cr_p about your problems that NOBODY cares ;D ;D

“yeah, it’s kind of weird and ironic to be complaining when the scene is about this sort of thing.”

Then why did you do it? Was today a rainy day and you were stuck inside with nothing to do?? I don’t understand doing something and then dissing what you did.

    @chris

If all of the site users block the ads, then I don’t think the advertisers would continue to purchase ads on rlslog, since they won’t be seen.

Then how would the site make enough money to keep the site up and pay the staff? Keep your bright ideas to yourself.

the internet has a purpouse, it was made orginally to spread infomation fast, but ofcourse people take advantage of it and so on, peresonally, i think its pretty clear, you like and dislikes diffrents things, thats how its always been, the taste is like the ass, splitted in two sides

i use admuncher and i haven’t seen a single ad here for months, i know i should help out the site but martin really, the ads are too much, they take over the site!

if u can think of another way for readers to help the site it would be great, till then admuncher will keep blocking out the content

rslog is the best and checked daily by myself and many others as in the previous comments above have shown.
Its the best i have found on the net and with just what ya want.

    Games, movies, music, news . . . . .

I always go on the descriptions and find it is the best source for what i’m looking for.

For other people to copy what rslog are doing just shows that you are doing a good job.

I just love this site :)

Keep up the great work and ignore post 77 and the others that are putting the site down. they proberly the ones stealing your work and putting it up on their own sites!!!

Thanks again and keep up the great work :)

Thought I would post something useful instead of whinging and moaning.

    Here are a few ideas:-

    a) Disbale the synopsis of the RSS feed or just add a “For further Details refer to rlselog.net”

    b) In the same vain as the “Spam Protection” measure, add this to each release for users of the site to see the review.

    c) Don’t use text for the reviews, instead convert them to a jpeg with a watermark.

This is what the wife has been waiting to see, the quality of course sounds incredible and I did not grab the other due to the missing 6 seconds. Even though it is just 6 seconds it does interrupt the experience.

It is much appreciated that they did a proper and its incredible how fast it came about.

Maybe you should listen to your user base instead. The reason there’s so many lamer 15y-os here is cos they dont have brains or credit cards. If you keep on ignoring those who do have brains and credit cards then your site will just keep sliding downhill like a turd on wheels…
