Application Yellowsn0w: unlock your iPhone
The cat and mouse game between iPhone hackers and Apple has taken a new interesting turn, as the hackers have unlocked the device from the shackles of AT&T. Presenting an incredible New Year gift to the iPhone owners who simply don’t want to be restricted to AT&T network, iPhone hackers have unleashed a software, tagged as “Yellowsn0w”, which is now available as free download for the users. In addition, the software could also be useful to the residents of the places where AT&T’s network is not available yet. A part of the iPhone developer team met at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress, the team members Planetbeing, Pytey, Bushing, and Musclenerd, in conjunction with several anonymous Russian speakers, have demonstrated the way of unlocking and jailbreaking the device in a one hour presentation.
While discussing the unlocking procedure, the hackers kicked-off their demonstration with describing iPhone’s basic design, its boot sequence and baseband, and all such entities that were required to unlock the iPhone. The iPhone dev team discussed the various exploits they used for the purpose, which differed starkly from the efforts required for first- and second-generation handsets, along with the manner the unlock code executes, and the method of delivering payload.

respekt to that team for unlocking it, but that phone is so BAD that I wouldn't considered to buy it even if it wasn't locked. I think that you can get a lot more with HTC, HP or even lately Samsung Smartphone for the same (or in most cases a lot lower) price.
Apple simply is not the brand that should do cell or smatphones, actually I woldn't buy ANYTHING that has apple on it, so this opinion may be a little bias but, I saw more than one proof to think like that.

Altought it has some issues with some SIMs, its a very good progress.

I really dont understand the need for these tools. iPhones can be used legitimately on other networks. Multiple friends of mine bought iPhones for use on the Canadian celphone network "rogers". They bought them from Rogers, with a Warranty from Apple (one of which got to use his in december)
quickpwn or pwnage are used to jailbreak the phone, which allows to use third party applications without the need of using AppStore. It allows you to customize your phone.
But if your phone is locked to some carrier, you can't use a SIM from a different carrier. Even in jailbreak phones.
Yellowsn0wn is a small application that runs in your phone and allows you to use any carrier SIM. To use yellowsn0w, you need to have your phone jailbreak

Sure, but in my case, I've got a iphone from a gift, which was locked to a carrier different from mine… so this will allow me to use the phone.
Also if you travel to a different country, you might want to use a local carrier so calls are less expensive.

Ahh, i think i understand. Some iPhones are locked to carriers, and some are not. I see. The ones we get up here are not attached to Rogers. That explains why another friend of mine joked about selling his iPhone to an american.

Big screen, 8mb cam, 32gb+ card space, full screen movies (320×240 mpeg4), Java apps (Opera Mini, Gmail, Facebook, etc).
No touch screen though, but I can live without that gimmick.
