Apple’s Leopard becomes a sales hit
Apple’s latest offering in the arena of operating systems, Leopard has broken all previous sales records. Apple’s efforts to provide new and innovative things to the people has touched one more landmark as the estimates show that the first month sales for the latest operating system “Leopard” are up by 32.8 percent dollar volume and unit volume up 20.5 percent. These data are on the basis of the comparison made to sales of “Tiger” in its first month. Leopard is the fifth OS in the Mac OS 10 series and its shipping started on October 25 all over the world. The new copy of Leopard costs $129 for a single user and $199 for a “family pack” that can be installed on as many as five computers in a single household. It has no variations in the price range for different versions unlike Microsoft which launched Vista in the price range of $100 and $260 for its versions- Home Basic, Premium, Business and Ultimate.

Some other interesting features which are attracting the customers are: New 3D desktop, Quick Find and the ability to preview documents or files without starting up a separate program, as well as quick access to other computers on a home or an office network. Leopard is also the first OS which is completely 64 bit operated. This helps in fastening the speed of the data transfer in the system. While the increases in dollar and unit volume can partially be attributed to going on sale during November, but the main reasons are the holiday season in progress and also the growth in the number of Apple retail stores.

Awesome. Thanks for the timely news. Talk more about OS’s that I can’t download.
Nice!!!
Never used MAC but I think Apple is much more intelligent than Microsoft..
Looks ok, but just ok. Vista looks 100 times better. And is probably 2000% more compatible with stuff than this. Mac’s will survive cuz they look sharp sitting on your desk, but if they don’t start letting other companies, like Acer, Dell, etc…start making their own macs to sell, they will be gone in less than 10 years. Only having the option to buy a Mac made by Mac sucks. It’s why the Windows format took hold, you get lots of options when buying a machine. Macs are just Macs.
This is so factually incorrect it’s almost amazing.
“Leopard is also the first OS which is completely 64 bit operated.”
Lol. What about almost every Linux distribution or Windows XP 64-bit Edition? And I assume we’re talking about desktop operating systems.
There’s more to laugh at but I’m too lazy to bash some random news source.
martin the mac fanboy does it again….
the source for this article cant be independant, it reads like a PR sales text by Mac, with twists to the facts. Quote”Apple’s efforts to provide new and innovative things to the people has touched one more landmark”…. if they are so innovative and all, why are most applications that people use daily not compatible with this overpriced box? its laughable.
fact, mac is 2 times more expensive for same performance than pcs, not compatible with most things you use daily, especially games…new generation hackers are targeting mac now and…. you will look like a corksniffing t@rd using this.
Sales hit? Bullsh1t. OSX SP1 for the price of a new OS.
@3. Vista doesn’t look 1000x better than Leopard. Vista took it’s looks from OSX in general. You obviously have never used a mac, pockets are probably a little too shallow from working at the local McDonalds. People have been saying the Macs will never last for the last 15-20 years. They have always been labeled as a fad, but their marketshare continues to get stronger. I own both a Mac and a home-build PC. I enjoy both equally. Macs just work without worrying about drivers and making sure internal components are compatible. They just run which is nice when you don’t want to d|ck around with hardware just to a stable machine. Macs have their place and you have your’s, with your head jammed up your own @ss.
A more recent desktop picture and not some beta version as soon above
http://64-bit-computers.com/wp-content/uploads/mac_osx_leopard.jpg
Yeah Yeah, windows took its looks from macs and macs from linux and linux from windows.
All the matters is the final product and what the user wants not who first invented it.
Mac is pretty pointless for gaming, there aren’t many mac compatable games….
why not install leopard on your windows pc?

what’s with this Apple PR? since when did the Mac fanboys take over this site - really depressing
@8, typical mac fanboy response, lol!
if you are not a rtard you can have xp running smooth, fast and with no problems, in fact there will be no better os ….. but if you are a mac fanboy who thinks he knows computers while he doesnt, sure, dont use xp and waste your money on too expensive corksniffing tools like mac which wont do half the work a pc can, lol.
i mean you said it yourself, you HAVE to have a pc next to your mac, because it wont do most things like a pc, like many programs and games…. now who is the rtard?
lol ya can see the people who don’t have a clue what a mac is by most of these comments.
Its a tool , and is as only good as the person using…and by the sounds of it not alot of imagination there so i bet ya PC just loads games and thats it….there is more to computing than games mates. CREATE something ffs
Actually, a Mac is effective when you want to impress someone. Other than that, it is a trash OS.
What can OSX do that Windows cant?
What can Windows do that OSX cant?
MAC is for noobs! If you install OS X on an normal PC you are probably going to have a lot of compatibility problems! As for gaming…LOL! No directX10! That sucks! Only OpenGl!
BTW: I hate Quicktime! The player and the codecs are bloated and horrible to install! I use QuickTimeAlternative!
mrg, i use xp for semi-pro homerecording, photoshop, video editing, obviously you can create with it too, so stop the corksniffing comments like others mentioned. like mac is the only choice for creating things on computer, lol.
mac users try very very hard to convince others that the amount of money they spent is worth it, while it is not, otherwise why be so obsessed with it?
Isn’t that screenshot of Tiger? Doesn’t look one bit Leopard to me.
well i am a windows fan and will always remain
whenever u want to do something all u have to do is just google and voila some1 somewhere has always made a software or a way out to get your job done
the support the activivties that a normal pc on a simple win xp can do is way too many to be even compared with the so called high headed mac osx which i guess only rich arses can fancy
i know couple of softs like garageband are highly rated and music production guys prefer mac but all that can be done on a pc as well and trust me since sp2 i am yet to see windowns xp professional crash and i have a modest low-mid range pc
amd x2 4000
1gb 533mhz ram
and 250 gb sata hdd running xp and vista on dual boot
obviously vista needs more ram but i just have that for time pass all my needs are fullfilles by XP
so if i win a lottery and i need to spend that stuff in an apple store only i’ll fancy mac osx until that day thanks but no thanks
and yeah theres always linux which i do fancy but yet to experiment
Modern Apple Macs are just Intel-based PCs running an open-source-based Darwin operating system with enterprise-class hardware drivers for certain Apple-supported specific component hardware. It is currently possible (but not that easy) to install and run the latest Apple OSX operating system on a self-built Core2Duo box. If you pay for the operating system I think you are licensed to use it so imagine if/when Apple openly release it to the normal PC community …….
1) I own a mac and respect peoples comments (if bad) aimed at macs if they have used one recently, if ever! My friend has worked in IT support for years with PC’s and has changed to a mac. Why? must be something good.
2) I own an XBOX 360 to play Games…Do I need Open GL or Direct X for that? nope. Microsoft have made something I like and use.
3) Yes, Quicktime is Poo…. But there are Plugins so i can now view all popular file formats.
4)I am not amazing with PCs and use them rarely so I won’t run them down or compare. Just saying that I have a mac and I find it ok.
5)Why do people get so irate when they become invisible behind their comps on the net. Half of these users(mac & PC) are probably nerds at school who get beat up daily so why be brave now? or are these comments are by the star quarterbacks?
“first month sales for the latest operating system “Leopard” are up by 32.8 percent dollar volume and unit volume up 20.5 percent.”
Doesn’t matter, 20.5% of nothing is still nothing. Funny, they don’t release the actual number of units sold
“This helps in fastening the speed of the data transfer in the system.”
I can’t believe Apple would release a sentence like this.
Macs are for people who don’t know how to use a real computer.
Quicktime FOR PC is pooo. Quicktime for Mac is a totally different trip.
lol nice, lots of upset people over an apple story. I wonder why people bother going bonkers like that.
“Macs are for people who don’t know how to use a real computer.”
Then what is a mac, pretend? Do you buy them from Pan’s F****** labyrinth!!!
I’m amazed most people on here have past the spam protection Math
Mac Book Pro with XP Black Edition in Parallels FTW!
The mac and games never really went together. The best game I had on my Mac SE was Dark Castle, and that game still sucked compared to the games out for the Amiga and 286. But I remember hanging out in mac.warez one night right before Christmas break of ‘94 waiting for Marathon. I believe you PC only tools might recognize it as Doom. I got it right when it dropped. After I up’d it to my BBS, I spent the next several days playing it. The next year, my roomate failed out of school because he wasted so much time before finals on Marathon 2, so I had the room to myself the rest of the year. Thanks Macs!
More news about mac applications would be nice, because many mac resources are down =/
I think Macs are for wannabe arty farty designers or girls. If you want a mac just install osx on your pc… Recent poll on the bbc says 31% of people who buy macs are homosexual.
yep, most people who got macs that i know are or arty farty girls who have a no hoper study or hom0sexuals who think they will become big in the movie indusrty. ima juz sayin son.
When my boyfriend is munching on my pork sword I load up my Mac and take quicktime vids of the action!
I’m amazed most people on here have past the spam protection Math
Hahaha! Got me cracking here in the middle of the night!
I haven’t posted comments here in quite a while, mainly because most of the comments posted here, in my opinion, do not have basis or intellectual importance. And, today has not proved me wrong. However, just to let those of you who don’t know much about technology… computers to be more exact… Apple products may not be in the mainstreams but if you’re looking for a products that just works, go for Apple.
Let’s the MS’s Vista. It looks very nice (cartoonist, if I dare say) but it isn’t stable, not very functional, coupled with problems. Its innumerable new, eye-catching features are tantalizing, but on a practical scale, it shows little variation from the preceding XP. Coincidentally, like most beauty in this world, it seems to come with a price: either your sanity, or your RAM. That’s what I call form but no function. why would I put up with such a bad relationship?
What apple products give you is form and function plus a sleek design that warrants attention. The key to Apple’s success is their ability to balance function and form. Never will a device hyper-extend itself at the risk of failing. Only the most secure features are added slowly into newer upgrades. The jump from Tiger to Leopard alone reflects this. Instead of recreating a completely new operating system that requires massive hardware upgrades, or so many new features that the system itself feels completely unique and unfamiliar, we see a simple system that reflects characteristics of its ancestors. A few features, here, a few features there, and you’re still secure in your space. That’s what we need in a computer, and any piece of technology for that matter.
Those of you rubbishing Mac OS are just like little kids (which i believe most of you are) brought up on Mcdonald and are of the belief that Mcdonalds is the only source of food on earth.
Cheers!
@ Cyrus
Thanks lover for sticking up for our Mac love! Thanks for the serving too!:)
Does anyone know were i can get that leopard picture?
i want it for my new background! =)
” Leopard is the fifth OS in the Mac OS 10 series ”
Can you just imagine the uproar if Microsoft brought out a new OS every year the way Apple does?
@kemp: the reason Macs do not have driver problems is that it is a closed technology. Imagine what MS could do if they decided to make a MS computer with the same control that Apple has over their hardware! But then every country in the world would be suing their butt.
I have no problem with Macs other than their stupid and insulting advertising. People should use whatever system makes them happy…Windows, Mac, Linux, DOS, CPM, etc…
@36 Cyrus, you sound like a corksniffing h0m0sexual the way you explained the PR of Apple, proving my point
can you explain why most progs and games are not compatible with mac? why you must pay 2 times more for same performance? and why you cant update hardware, no you must buy a new mac if you wanna go faster?
You should download the Bee Gees collection on page 2, right up your alley!
Apple could easily destroy Microsoft if they initially could access a mere quarter of the distribution network that MS have. People don’t use Windows because they like it, love it or find it a paramount OS - they use it because it was the thingie that came with the PC they bought. Then you have the Baby Duck syndrome which, according to wikipedia: “…denotes the tendency for computer users to “imprint” on the first system they learn, then judge other systems by their similarity to that first system. The result is that “users generally prefer systems similar to those they learned on and dislike unfamiliar systems.” Personally, I’ve used windows since win95, worked as a IT-consultant with windows servers and to be quite frank: it’s an OS made to be sold, not used. I dual boot Gentoo and XP on my “big iron”; the latter OS purely for gaming. My MacBook Pro dual boot with Leo and Ubuntu - and I’m very content with version 10.5. OS X is by far the most intuitive OS I’ve ever used; it’s definitely a feeling that this is a tailor made OS, very clean and unobtrusive towards the user. With BSD under the hood, you’ve got all the power and stability you need. But of course, I’m a Linux fanboi at heart, and I’m eagerly awaiting the release of KDE4, which I believe will attract more users towards Linux and be on par with Aqua in terms of slickness and usability.
“Leopard is the fifth OS in the Mac OS 10 series and its shipping started on October 25 all over the world.”
Wait, what? 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5… something doesn’t add up.
After running Ubuntu for a few weeks I found I can live without M$ XP. And I look forward to a MacMini as i have no need to build a mega system to get fps in games and be outdated videocard wise in 6months. All i do is web, torrent, dvd utils, small bit of sound and video editing, mp3 and old school emulation like MAME,DOSBOX,Amiga. And heck i could dual boot to run XP if i needed.
All these homo comments are funny coz really who gives a f**K. If your dual core single core homo lezo. Whats that got to do with anything?
And not knowing how to use a PC isnt a crime. Alot of Windoze users dont know about turning off services so..
Reading these comments makes me want to scream.
The ignorance and stupidity around here is outstanding.
Comparing Windows Vista and Mac OS 10.5 is like comparing Mac Donald’s food with a quality restaurant..
And yes, I have used both extensively.
@MAXp0wr
Although I too am Windows Vista user who is very happy with his system, I would certainly not equate Mac OS 10.5 to McDonalds food.
It definitely had good points back when it came out…and of course, I’ll never forget the Mac’s contribution to desktop publishing.
“The new copy of Leopard costs $129 for a single user and $199 for a “family pack” that can be installed on as many as five computers in a single household.”
Technically that is incorrect. Normal Copy of Leopard ($129) does not have a cap on the number of users. You can install it on as many computers as you want… thus making the Family Pack a “rip-off pack”. I know, I was surprised to learn that too.
Right, first off, McDonalds is alright, so leave it alone.
Secondly, I have been a Windows user since it first came out, and since the release of Leopard I have switched to Macs because it’s just so brilliant. The downside of Macs is that the latest games are released later than they are released for Windows PCs.
Thirdly, Windows and Mac have their upsides and their downsides, why the hell does anyone care, if you wanna use Windows, use Windows, if you wanna use Mac OS, use Mac OS. Both sets of users are stuck up thinking that their systems are the best. Windows users saying that Mac users know nothing about computers is quite clearly not true, I know a fair bit about computers. Point is, it doesn’t matter, you should all get over yourselves, put differences aside and unite against the Linux users.
Best OS on the best computer company.
Come on guys, who cares what system you use. If you enjoy it great. If you are dissatisfied consider a change. Only one or two of the comments here are worth anything - because they are from people who have actually used both systems and therefore know. I have a Mac at home and use a PC at work (because every other business uses PC’s). Both have their pros and cons. As for games, why wouldn’t you aim your game at the PC market - it is by far the biggest - but most companies eventually put out a version for the Mac market so not is all lost.
To be honest, the only real difference I see between the two is that you need to know much less about the internal operations of a computer to use a Mac than you do a PC - far less ‘problem solving’. The ‘tech heads’ can have their own arguments - as I said at the beginning ‘who cares’.
Merry Christmas
@P-J - That’s also a beta image.

Anyway, this article is extremely inaccurate:
1. Leopard is the sixth OS in the Mac OS X series
2. Its shipping started on October 26
3. Some other interesting features which are attracting the customers are: New 3D Dock,
4. Quick Look - the ability to preview documents or files without starting up a separate program
5. Leopard is not the first OS which is completely 64 bit - but it is the first OS that runs on both 32 and 64 bit machines, and runs 32 & 64 bit programs seamlessly.
Paul, you are incorrect. I’ve been running the same OS on both 32-bit and 64-bit machines for a few years now, and the 64-bit OS that I’m writing this from right now has a 32-bit version of Firefox installed so that I can have all that Flash “goodness” that the web seems full of these days
That OS is Linux, of course, with KDE as my desktop environment. Which OS X owes a lot to, first of all the web browser is largely just a port of the default KDE one!
So kids, don’t believe Apple when they say they’re the first. At anything, really. There really isn’t anything they did first . . . they’re just the first to market that first
To clarify, other than that Paul is pretty much spot on in his corrections of this article.
“swiss guy:
2) I own an XBOX 360 to play Games…Do I need Open GL or Direct X for that? nope. Microsoft have made something I like and use.”
You prove exactly my point! Not only you pay a lot of U$ dollars on your mac but also on buying XBOX! LOOOOOL! PC can do both and more!
I like to build my PC from scrap! Soon I will buy a quadcore, then a nvidia 8800 gts, more RAM…etc.
Can a MAC do this?
Where can I get that background????
that looks a lot more like tiger than leopard (dock, the bar at the top, etc.)
This all flaming is so pointless.
I used MS products starting from early DOS, and through all Windows version starting from 3.1. I have used Linux on desktop for a few years. Now I use OS X.
There really is no point in saying that one is better than the other. All of them have their good sides and downsides. All comes to what you want to do with your computer.
My rule of thumb when recommending computer is that if you’re a gamer go for Windows, if you’re a more a tech person with lots of time on your hands - Linux, if you are anything else - take Mac.
Well, actually, if you want best of both worlds, get Mac, install windows with BootCamp. You have Win for games and OS X for everything else.
There is no better, it’s a matter of choice.
Real unix, stability, excellent desktop, does it for me. I work on Solaris and tested all major *nix in the last decade. No more compiling for me thanks, Im willing to pay extra.
Don’t compare mac hardware with the cheapest PC, google for a mac vs dell comparison.
Internet runs on unix, most hackers target unix systems, OSX is based on FreeBSD, Windows security doesn’t compare. If you think othewise maybe read some.
Chill out people this is not a prison where you align with the group of the same skin colour against everyone else. Chosing is ok.
I haven’t used a Mac in years, and would have no objection in trying one, but I don’t like the limitations in building one. They are very expensive for what you get, and they are horrible with game support.
The biggest complaint with me is the balls it takes Apple to charge what they do for memory. $700 for 2GB of memory? That is bloody insulting m8. For the same exact IMac they sell for $2300 I could build for a fraction that has more capabilities. So while I would have no objections in using a Mac I can’t justify the high price for no benefits and less compatibility.
Sure, theres less virus’ and no driver headaches, but anyone with even reasonable PC knowledge can easily fix a driver problem and know how to use a firewall. Once Macs support games on a wide scale and offer other retailers to build them, thus making them cheaper, I would buy one. Until then theres no reason to spend more to get less.
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=macs_cant
I agree with charging extra on hardware, and that page is funny lol. About the fixes ive been doing that all my life in linux and i prefer to pay.
pc for gaming. Mac for working?
