Apple unveils ultra-thin MacBook Air

Looking to build on the success of its iPod and iPhone devices, Apple Inc. introduced several new products including an ultra-thin laptop computer, dubbed the Macbook Air, and a much-anticipated online movie rental service. The new Apple notebook computer’s major attribute is its sleek profile: it’s about three-quarters of an inch thick and weighs three pounds. The Macbook Air features a full-sized keyboard, a 13-inch screen, a built-in camera, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, all powered by an Intel Corp. dual core chip. Appearing on stage at the company’s Macworld expo, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the computer, which he called “world’s thinnest notebook,” will cost $1,799 and is scheduled to ship in about two weeks. Ultramobile notebooks represent about 6% of the 270 million notebooks expected to the sold this year. Apple may benefit from good timing. Asus International Ltd.’s recently introduced Eee PC has topped sales charts at Amazon.com and is usually sold out at retail stores.

Apple’s CEO also launched the computer maker’s much-anticipated online movie rental service and unveiled an updated Apple TV device that will let viewers bypass their computers and rent movies directly from their widescreen TVs. Mr. Jobs said iTunes users can rent new-release movies to watch over their computers, iPods or iPhones for $3.99 for a 30 day period. Older titles will rent for $2.99 for the same time period. The service has the support of all major Hollywood studios including Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, News Corp.’s Fox, Lionsgate and New Line, Apple said. Mr. Jobs also disclosed Apple had sold more than four million iPhones worldwide in the 200 days since the company’s trend-setting smartphone was launched. Is this going to be an another year of big success for Apple? It seems so right now…

    and to quote Steve Jobs…

MacBook Air is 0.16″ to 0.76″. The thickest part of the MacBook Air is thinner than the thinnest part of the Sony. It fits inside a envelope.

Poor move by Apple?? I guarantee this will sell. They rarely produce anything that doesn’t excel at the market. This only proves Apple will yet own the computer market, as they already rule the music industry, Microsoft isn’t even close to competing with them. Like the Zune? What were they thinking??

It’s thin and doesn’t look too bad, but has no DVD drive, only one USB port, no Ethernet, no user-replaceable battery, a slow CPU, integrated graphics, a tiny 4200RPM 80GB HDD, …

Not too impressed this year. Yes, the laptop is pretty… super-thin, good job. The rest of the show, pretty tame.

@20, the only way Macs will ever own the computer industry is to become completely compartmentalized and upgradeable like PC’s – people don’t like paying inflated prices for Macs when they can custom-build a PC and upgrade at a fraction of the cost. @25 you’re spot on. Macs for music/graphics/kids, PC’s for business. :P ::poke:: ::poke::

I can’t wait to even see one of these. Like people have said this is not meant to replace anyones main computer.

$1799 is nothing to pay for that.

if you dont like apples, dont post about them… you can go buy yourself a dell or some other pos Pee See, then downgrade to xp, cause vista blows, then have yourself a pretty crappy computer that only runs well for a week, when you could of had a MAC

    BTW here are some specs,

MacBook Air offers a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support, letting users pinch, rotate and swipe. The new notebook is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and it includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1. Starting at just $1,799

There is no way I would buy this for that much money. I bought a Gateway laptop with 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 3 USB ports, 15.4″ screen, a webcam, a DVD+/-RW drive with DVD-RAM featuring Labelflash Technology and CD/R and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi for about $900.

I think that if Macs were to become more widely used than PCs, they would need to lower the price to compare to PCs.

This is where laptops will be going over the next few years. The only complaint I have is it’s still a boutique computer people buy to look cool rather than functionality. That’s always going to be apples major flaw in my eye, everything they put out is overpriced (same can be said for sony). In a couple years laptops like this will be what everyone is buying with thumb drives and larger memory sticks becoming more popular and dropping in price. Right now it’s still like buying the first CD player, you’re overpaying for something that will be much more popular and inexpensive in a few years and produced better.

I am speechless with this. EEE PC costs at max 500$. It’s actually “portable”, with a 7′ screen, instead of a 13′.

Who seeks real portability does not want a 13′ computer. Sure it may be lightweight… But there for a 13′ screen, it lacks a lot. Even EEE PC, which weights less than 1 kg and with the limitations (actually, trade off between capability and portability) it has, it still holds such exquisite stuff like usb ports, ethernet, microphone/headphone jack, etc. All that for the single product, no need to buy extra “USB Ethernet adapter” and such.

Anyway, Macbook Air is just a regular laptop, which happens to be lightweight, but severely stripped down.
EEE PC is a different product. Different league. It’s a highly portable, non-graphical work only computer. And that is reflected, also, in it’s price.

Macbook Air will compete with laptops such as Toshiba’s (Portege), LG’s (A1 Series) or Sony’s (TZ Series) lightweight laptops (and probably more) that have already existed for years now! Looks better? It’s thin? Who cares! It weights about the same (1.3 Kg) and has less hardware functions.
    A pure Mac-Geek product.

It doesn’t matter how slim it actually is, you cant put 13 inches screen in your pocket.
However, I do appreciate additional functionality which is for this notbook to be used as frisbee.

you’re paying extra for the shiny apple on the front… this isn’t meant to be a powerhouse gamer, just a skinny little light computer for emails and internets. maybe a little officing in there too.

obviously not aimed at power users. hang in there, you’ll get your turn.

can’t afford to be an early adopter, but i’m still rooting for it. if this model does well and parts continue to get smaller (duh), then price will go down and you can probably expect this to become the norm for laptops. if you don’t like apple, then just wait for your favorite manufacturer to copy and cram vista in. i want to see alienware’s artsy response to this :-)

  55. xni
    January 16th, 2008 | 01:59

I am slightly disappointed by this in the sense that I was expecting a 12/13″ version of the macbook pro. A smaller, more portable laptop that can be used to play some of the latest games. I think Apple have actually priced this very fairly considering the competition and its size. I bought an Asus EEE in december and I would still prefer that to the macbook air. The size is incredibly small and what I would truely call portable. It also has more features, including 3 usb ports (1 on the air), an ethernet port (none of the air so no need to buy stupid adaptors), a microphone jack for voip/skype calls and a card reader which is handy if you take lots of photos. If you really want something portable, spend $400 and get an EEE and blow the rest on a decent desktop or something :D

  57. johnjohn
    January 16th, 2008 | 02:09

Funny how you people can’t think beyond your own needs.

The competitors are at least two generations behind with this release from a technological standpoint, depending whether the reduced intel cpu is mac only for now, and if not for how long.

This is a market thats going to explode in the next couple of years, and Apple certainly will help that happen with this machine. Later this year we will most likely see the matching docking station, a 24″ LCD where the Air will slide in the screen itself.

It may not be hypeworthy for you, but it certainly will be for a lot of others. And let us not forget, none of the competition run OS X, this will run it all.

Still one can’t help but be annoyed that they once again opted for a glossy screen. Totally unnessecary with the LED backlit screen, at least it is on the MacBook Pro.

Notwithstanding it completely upsets the pricetag on ultra-portables. Most of the competitors start at double the costs and much lower specs.

    And now, flame on.

  58. kasuza
    January 16th, 2008 | 02:09

I don’t like the idea of battery seal inside the laptop and no fans. I wonder if Macbook Air are gonna have battery explode due to overheat. i hope that not gonna happen. :) Beside, they should keep the design of Macbook pro and make it thinner like Macbook air instead introducing new line of notebook.

Standard hardrive (80GB) is a big NO NO NO.

    January 16th, 2008 | 03:26

No Superdrive? well thats what I first thought. You have to take into consideration that Apple is always five steps ahead of the market, they were the first to get rid of the floppy drives, where the PC industry was still including the floppy up until a few years ago. When was the last time you actually used your burner? I use a USB keychain, external Harddrive or my ipod to transfer files. Ok fine, what about watching mvies? well how many of us are going out and renting anything? not many considering we can get new releses from a quick download. The Apple rental sounds like a great idea for the honest joe. I am interested to see how Apple develops this machine after the first 6 months.

  63. ben
    January 16th, 2008 | 04:27

for those people who say that apple is “years” ahead of the competition, i suggest actually looking at other companies.
Cowon and archos came out with mp3 sized player playing video on a small 2.2″ screen, at least a year to a year and a half before the ipod video. The gmini 400 which was a 20gb mp3/video/games player came out in october 04′ exactly a year before the first ipod video (5th generation), it was the same size as the ipod, an actually cheaper too. Another example, the604 wifi (that i now have) was released in oct 06′ almost a year before apple decided to combine a video player with internet capabilities and came out with the ipod touch. the 604 wifi actually has a 30gb hard drive, a bigger touchscreen, and it actually records tv. So don;t tell me apple is years ahead, at least not when it comes to ipods and other portable electronics, archos and cowon are at least a year ahead. Macbook air? who is going to spend 1,800 on a laptop with 80 gb hard drive, no cd drive, no ethernet, audio plug on the side and only ONE USB SLOT???. How can u call this a laptop if it only has one usb slot? who is the genius who thought of that?.

  64. e-z
    January 16th, 2008 | 04:42

To the person who keeps talking about the Sony TZ series, this is a quote from notebooks.com:

“During the keynote Steve Jobs kept comparing the MacBook Air to Sony’s TZ series. He didn’t mention that the Sony TZ series has an internal DVD burner and can get up to 12 hours of battery life. Or that you can order the TZ series with a 64GB solid state drive AND a 250GB hard drive. The Sony TZ also has a full compliment of ports and plugs including three USB ports, a FireWire port, ExpressCard slot, Ethernet port and more.”

Although I agree that the Sony TZ’s price is ridiculous, when compared to the MacBook Air, there’s a reason it’s more expensive.

I dont really think its overpriced, thats kinda a wrong choice in terminology. What sony put into the machine in pure hardware terms doesnt equate to that difference in price. Apple’s machine costs a lot, but its got a lot of commodity parts in it, they’ve got a chipset thats housing a 1.6 or 1.8 ghz core 2 duo chip thats the size of a nickel. The Intel CEO said that every material in that chip, due to how small they shrunk that thing down, was basically incredibly complex and made of incredibly fine materials. The production costs added in, im sure those suckers cost Apple a lot. The rest of the chipset is equally shrunken down. Then you throw in LED backlighting, abandoning a lot of the chemical treatment solutions used to protect components and reduce fire hazards, and having highly recyclable aluminum, and the costs really start to add up. I perfectly understand why it’s priced like it is, I just know that the cost isnt anywhere near worth it to me.

Granted, thats my pet peeve, a lot of the time Apple does a lot of stuff that pushes the costs of their machines up. Not to ridiculous levels, mind you, nowadays you can even grab a mac for less than similarly configured dell machines. But I remember when macs used to cost in the multiple thousands, and it was all pure profit for Apple. Thats not what they’re doing now. That old Apple was the one that was overpriced. Today, the machines are reasonably priced, the question is whether or not what you’re getting in terms of quality and design outweighs whatever the other guy is doing. It’s been worth it for me, especially as of late.

    B) A desktop PC will always have better specs for a lesser price! (desktop parts are not made to fit into the smallest areas mainly)
    C) yes it’s aimed at girls, because all they want to do is browse the internet and maybe download a couple songs and email all the stuff girls do.
    D) who needs a dvd drive? i never use my dvd-rom anymore. and hey all laptops used to have to connect an external floppy drive just to use a floppy disk (and in some instances a CD-Rom drive!) If u need portable storage, use a flash drive they are cheap as anything these days!

oh and btw, I’m from Australia and i have completed studies in computer science. So i have a good knowledge in and around PC’s. And yet I still can’t stand apple desktop pc’s cause yes they are overpriced for what they are.Although i have to admit, they have some pretty cool laptops, i own a macbook myself. So i have experienced the best of both worlds although there is no chance I’d use it as an average day to day pc. There is just so many incompatibility’s plus i have my desktop pc for everything =D

    my 2 cents.

    @65

no one will even bother who came out with what kind of mp3/4 first.

the main thing is that Apple have great marketing strategy, and they haven’t failed. iPods/iPhones and Macbooks are great success. they are the first to remove the floppy drive and they might again be the first to remove the cd drive.
Even thumbdrive comes in 32GB now.

In terms of MacBook Air, It designed for the portability.
For the wireless life, its not meant to replaced your main computer. Its designed for you to meet clients, presentations etc. Therefore you do not need cd drive, more usb cables etc.

And MacBook Air has built in mic and iSight Camera for video calls, so to those who complained about mic jack or watsoever, please wake up your idea.

Apple in a way is bring better quality and lifestyle of electronics to a brand new level. This will in the end benefit us as consumers, as other competitors continue to improve their standards to match Apples.

I am sure some complete idiots with too much money will love this thing, but anyone who has one ounce of common sense will never go near that macbook hair.

    Good points:

    Light
    um….

    Bad Points:

1 USB port (ONLY 1 FFS- What are you going to plug in, ipod or camera or flash drive, not at the same time)

Costs a fortune, the basic model comes in at £1200, the more expensive one at £2200. My laptop cost £500, comes with 4USB2 ports, an 80GB HD, DVD/CD RW ethernet port and replaceable battery

YOU CAN NOT remove the battery yourself, it is not “user serviceable”….so wave goodbye to taking this on any kind of trip…or taking an extra battery with you.

You can not connect this via ethernet, have to find a wireless hotspot somewhere or shell out another £25 for a USB-Ethernet adapter

You can not install software from a CD without the use of another computer, on which you have to install software, get it connected to the wireless, make sure the macbook is connected and then slowly start the install with the use of the other pc’s optical drive….. or buy an extra superdrive for about £65……. (just another ploy by apple to rip you off even more buy buying overpriced accessories that should come with the macbook already)

This thing is complete BS, not practical at all, and way overpriced. £2000? I could get a laptop with 8800’s in SLI for that kind of money.

    Mac fanboys f off.

“1 USB port (ONLY 1 FFS- What are you going to plug in, ipod or camera or flash drive, not at the same time)”

Do you really plug dozens of usb devices into your laptop every day or are you just nagging for fun? This is a portable laptop, not a desktop replacement. For carrying around, you see.

“My laptop cost £500, comes with 4USB2 ports, an 80GB HD, DVD/CD RW ethernet port and replaceable battery”

Is your laptop under 3 pounds and under 1″ thick? I thought so too. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

“You can not connect this via ethernet, have to find a wireless hotspot somewhere or shell out another £25 for a USB-Ethernet adapter”

You actually use wired ethernet on a laptop, how medieval of you.

“You can not install software from a CD”

When was the last time you actually inserted a CD or DVD into any of your computers? If I don’t count the times I ripped CDs, my last time was … let’s see … 3 years ago, when I installed Windows. Everything else is downloaded, games and all (Steam ftw)

    January 16th, 2008 | 13:33

    You guys are missing a few things here;

    * This laptop is not meant to be for the average consumer not in need of an ultraportable.
    * This laptop is not meant for more consuming tasks like professional graphic work or modern games – ie; it’s not a desktop replacement laptop – go mbp for that. The 8800SLI comment above really made me chuckle.
    * This laptop is alot cheaper than say its sony counterparts
    * This laptop can use any (mac or pc) cd/dvd drive over the network as if it was its own
    * The laptop isn’t user-replaceable, but a new battery costs the same amount of money as it does for the macbook/mbps, and apple will replace it free of charge
    * Nobody uses wired ethernet on a laptop anymore, just like nobody uses the ole ribbon printer cables, especially not on an ultraportable. Welcome to 2008 gentlemen!

“* The laptop isn’t user-replaceable, but a new battery costs the same amount of money as it does for the macbook/mbps, and apple will replace it free of charge”

Oh how considerate of them, free fitting LOL

So instead of being able to slot a new battery in, I have to make time to visit app£e in order for them to fit a battery for me? very practical I must say…. and what if you are on the move, can’t take a spare battery, so have to shell out even more cash for an adapter from App£e.

“* Nobody uses wired ethernet on a laptop anymore, just like nobody uses the ole ribbon printer cables, especially not on an ultraportable. Welcome to 2008 gentlemen!”

Unless you are sitting next to your wifi router, your signal deteriorates and so does speed/packet loss… especially if the building has thick walls/ you are on a different floor, and not many people will equip their house with AP’s to boost the signal, not to mention the security/health aspects.

“* This laptop is alot cheaper than say its sony counterparts”

Which also have dvd drives, and a full compliment of ports and a bigger HD

“* This laptop can use any (mac or pc) cd/dvd drive over the network as if it was its own”

Why would I want to waste time installing software on another mac/pc, getting it connected and sorting out the numerous BS problems before it will actually start installing anything?

“* This laptop is not meant for more consuming tasks like professional graphic work or modern games – ie; it’s not a desktop replacement laptop – go mbp for that. The 8800SLI comment above really made me chuckle.”

So what, you want us to buy a £1,200 laptop for…browsing the net and reading grandma’s emails?

“* This laptop is not meant to be for the average consumer not in need of an ultraportable.”

Sure, app£e aren’t going to target this towards the public as if it is the thing that we have been missing from our lives, and that it is the most practical and easy to use laptop ever… they only make bespoke products that only a handful of people will ever buy ;)

“When was the last time you actually inserted a CD or DVD into any of your computers?”

Today, actaully. I don’t really feel like installing Microsoft Office 2007 over wifi ;)

What if you want to watch a DVD? you aren’t going to rip it to your huge 80GB hard drive over wifi with the use of another computer’s optical drive, you will want to stick it straight into the macbook and watch…..

“Do you really plug dozens of usb devices into your laptop every day or are you just nagging for fun? This is a portable laptop, not a desktop replacement. For carrying around, you see.”

Yes, as it happens. When you are on the move, you do take ipods/flash drives/cameras/mobile phones etc with you believe it or not, and I would prefer to not have to plug them in one at a time!

“Is your laptop under 3 pounds and under 1″ thick? I thought so too. You’re comparing apples to oranges.”

No it is not, but neither is it lacking the features needed from any normal notebook, or cost an arm and a leg.
….buying the Macbook Air is like buying a Ferrari with one wheel missing to do the shopping in.

    Typos galore, I dont care.

It’s too expensive. Add the 64GB SSD drive and it’s extremely prohibitive.

No optical drive. This means you have to beg others to let you install a software Apple gave you on their PC so you have access to their drive.

No ethernet port. That makes the Remote Disk software useless if the PC you’re trying to connect to doesn’t have wireless.

Only 1 USB port. So you’ll need a USB hub, one more thing to carry around… that’s not portability

Battery not user Replaceable Unlike 99% of other laptops out there, the battery is not user replaceable.

Mono Speakers The built in speakers on the Macbook Air are weak and sound airy (sorry) from the hands-on videos so far. Worst of all, they’re mono, not stereo! Are we back in the 90s?

Fixed RAM The Macbook Air ships with 2GB of RAM by default. This RAM is onboard though, meaning there is no option to upgrade or to add more RAM.

Slow Processor 1.6 C2D by default is amongst the slowest Core 2 Duo processors you can get.

Slow 1.8? Hard drive The base model comes with a 1.8? hard drive. As most computer enthusiasts know, 1.8? hard drives top out at 4,200rpm
