Apple unveils iPhone 2.0 software

This is a guest post written by RLSLOG reader Hemant Sahi.

Apple has revealed that its next iPhone update will include more than just the expected addition of a software development kit (SDK). The company said that a host of enterprise-minded features and an application store will be added to the iPhone 2.0 software release. Developers and certain enterprise customers will be able to download the beta release immediately. All other users will have to wait until June. But this is the result of a little bit of searching on Mininova. The SDK will include APIs for the iPhone’s Core OS, Core Services, Media and Cocoa Touch software components. Developers will be able to sell their software to users via Apple’s new iPhone App Store which will allow users to download the software directly to the iPhone or iPod Touch. Apple said that developers can set their own prices for applications sold on the store, and that the company would take a 30 per cent commission. The figure is similar to the prices Apple reportedly pays record labels for songs sold via iTunes.

Apple plans to add support for Exchange 2003 and 2007 servers into the update, and has licensed Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync, which allows the iPhone to support push email as well as automatic calendar and address book updates. The iPhone will support Exchange’s remote wipe, password policies and auto discover security features. The 2.0 update will also allow the iPhone to support Cisco’s IPSec encryption protocol and the WPA2 wireless protocol, ensuring secure transmission of data to and from the device. This is iPhone’s giant leap towards becoming a complete Smartphone. Expect iPhone sales to reach the number one spot (currently at number 2 in the US) by the end of this year.

Everyone is going crazy over every iPhone update. Seriously, it’s just a gadget, some people are just hopeless tools.

“Everyone is going crazy over every iPhone update. Seriously, it’s just a gadget, some people are just hopeless tools.”

Work in IT and have end users showing up with shiny new iPhones and telling them they can’t get their e-mail.

Personally I’m happy as hell that iPhone supports Exchange now.

The iPhone supports GSM ONLY and Boost Mobile(Nextel) is iDen.
So you can’t put in just any Sim card even if it’s jailbroken/unlocked.

3 if i want to upgrade hardware i cant, i must buy a new mac.
4 mac is for arty faty corksniffin fangirls.
5 why pay twice as much for the exact same performance?

I have an iphone and I never had a mac. Iphones are awesome, get one and it makes your life easier when havbing to check e-mails on the go or browse the web in the middle of the city to look for certain spots. It’s also great for IT people also. Not only that but it’s a great music player combined with a phone. Very easy, just listen to music n when u get a call boom it asks you if u want to answer it or not, once done, music continues to play where left off. I jailbroke and unlocked my phone with t-mobile. It sucks that only att can have such great technology with their over the top price plans. You don’t have to be a mac fanboi to love one. I don’t have a mac. Peace brothas!!!!

This won’t take #1 off of RIM. As nice as the iPhone is, it won’t get the attention of corp America, not now anyways.

I use Spring pocket PC, think is 6800 or something and it does the job. On my model, and I heard on Mogul as well, speakers are so bad I can hardly hear anything, so no need to upgrade to Mogul. I tested iPhone and they are not that bad except I heard they have slow data connection which make it useless for me. I just cant wait a minute or two to load every single page. I thought this would be the first thing to be fixed in new version, but no mention about it… or am I wrong?

I probably mixed my model number with my old Nvidia card. Sorry, to lazy to google.

@18 mac = real unix with best desktop on the market. Not so many games, all kinds of software, you cant plug&play hardware but maybe because of that it is stable beyond what windows has to offer.
