Apple sold 100 million iPods
Apple has sold its 100 millionth iPod, making the digital music player the fastest-selling in history. The first was sold in November 2001 – and it has now been through 10 new models. These include five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle. The company said: “Along with iTune and the iTunes online music store, the iPod has transformed how tens of millions of music lovers acquire, manage and listen to their music.” “It’s interesting,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPod marketing. “2004 seems to be when the floodgates of competition opened, and that’s the same year we saw our market share soar. The competition had to relate themselves to the iPod–this is one of those rare situations where more competition actually helped us.”

There’s little doubt that the iPod strikes a nerve among consumers. “People have an emotional connection with music and the iPod allowed them to reconnect with their music,” Joswiak said. “The iPod is so easy, the emotional connection is preserved–with the competition, the product gets in the way, so the connection is countered by the negative experience of using the product.” If that’s true, then how did Apple get the formula right? Joswiak credits the company’s ease of use–both with the music player itself and with the iTunes software that connects the iPod to either a Mac or a PC. The total package only became stronger when Apple added digital music sales via the iTunes Store, launched in 2003. I still think that iPods are popular mostly in the United States and other manufacturers have way more to offer, if you don’t look exactly for cool design. But this won’t change anything on fact that many people still consider their iPod as something essential for their identity.

i m glad 2 say tht i m 1 of the 100 million people
Lol, buyed my iPod video today. Regrets cause i just see the Microsoft Zune… omg i’m stupid. Ahwell, ipod supports more video formats
Ipods are so expensive.
“But this won’t change anything on fact that many people still consider their iPod as something essential for their identity.”
Those people need friends. When I got my first walkman, or even discman, it didn’t become “an essential part of my identity”
These are the same baffoons that need their 400$ oakly shades or they’ll die.
My first mp3 player was a cheapo nonamebrand piece of crap, and died 3 days after the warranty, no joke. My ipod nano just plain works, sure it cost 150$, but it’s worth it. I only wish I hadda waited an got an ipod video.
Never bought one, will never buy one, though i wouldnt mind to be givin one. Monopolistic All the way – Apple Inc. Its just a fashion thing nothing more. way better and cheaper m-players out there
I’ve never bought an iPod and propably never will (simply because so many people are buying them). I’ve always been a fan of Archos. In fact I’m already on my third Archos. For someone like me, who knows his way around the net and all about codecs and encoding it’s a very good device. You simply get more bang for your buck than you do with an iPod. But I can see the charm of iPod’s for so many people. It’s relatively simple and because so many people have one you can talk about it with other people and ask for help if something doesn’t work.
“i m glad 2 say tht i m 1 of the 100 million people”
i really doubt 100 million people bought/own ipods just because they sold a hundred million. infact i have a G3 iPod and a G2 Nano. i’m sure there are many people who have used atleast 2 iPods. anyway i’m sure there are many other players that are good but the ipods already have a reputation of being reliable hence why so many people buy it. i’m don’t try to show off my ipod, infact i use black cabled head phones because the ipod ones are poor quality.
What is it with these apple haters? Everyone who knows anything about technology realises apple make the best products ( not phones it seems ). Are you jealous? Can’t afford one? ipod is not a status symbol, it’s just the best product on the market. But if you want inferior copycat devices go with arcon or zune, sony etc.
Zune is sexeh
i will never buy this shit
i own teh iPod so i am somebody? damn status symbol iPod
IPod are great but apple software sucks. Ipod’s only last 18 months at the most.
ARGH.
100 Million people have blown
the sh!t out of their ears with this
bad-sounding and expensive piece of
fashion-junk.
GO BUY SOME AUDIO ENGINEERS, APPLE!!!
or eat dutch breakfast
i agrees with many of u here (SnoochieBoochie) that Apple’s iPod is just a fashion statement and that it is a piece of shit compare to many other existing m-players…if you take a detail look at the specs…even with the lastest 60 or 80GB ipod video, the tech on the machine is quite outdated to many of the models offer by other companies.
Get a nice Sansa e200 player. It’s flash memory based and blows away the Nano since in plays video and is expandable. I will never buy a HD based player. Hard drives fail and they use too much battery. Anyway Ipod = sheep.
I got 3 ipods, and didn’t pay for any of it was the best part!
Great Apple products!
Marc, obviously you aren’t one of those people that knows anything about technology, as the iPod is an inferior product in almost every aspect. Sony being inferior? Sony actually made DAP’s before apple even thought of making them. Sony makes great quality products, from TV’s to even game systems. The ps2 is the most popular game system of it’s generation and more. The iPod doesn’t even offer radio, mediocre sound quality, insufficient codecs, and lacks more features then any other DAP on the market. You, obviously only used the fake tech genius identity to persuade other retards like yourself. Please, turn off your computer, wrap the mouse cord around your neck, and strangle yourself.
