Apple: record high profits despite tough economy

Apple has gone and posted up the financial results for operations during the second quarter of 2009. Not only this, but they commented on the possibility of an Apple netbook in the future. According to the press release, “Apple sold 2.22 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a three percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 11.01 million iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 3.79 million representing 123 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.” Apple posted a revenue of $8.16 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion. Apple has said the results exceeded their expectations, despite the lacking economy.

“We are extremely pleased to report the best non-holiday quarter revenue and earnings in our history,” said Apple chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer. “Apple’s financial condition remains very robust, with almost $29bn (£20bn) in cash and marketable securities on our balance sheet.” Looking ahead to the next quarter, Oppenheimer added Apple expected revenue in the range of about $7.7bn (£5.3bn) to $7.9bn (£5.4bn). A recent Gartner report showed worldwide PC shipments totalled 67 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a near seven per cent decline versus the first quarter of 2008. Gartner said that low priced mobile PCs continue to be the growth driver for the PC industry.

The current competitive system, where businesses exist solely to make a profit, is not sustainable.

With resources dwindling and an ever increasing population, the outlook for a continued human civilization on this planet look dire with the current economic capitalistic system were everyone is competing against everyone else for an ever decreasing slice of the pie.

It will be all about cooperation rather than competition if we ever wish to survive.

this is what happens when you make the better product because you patented everything… If they were in Sony's position they may have tried to patent portable freakn audio/media.

I still think SE and Walkman blows there products out of the water.

It's just more of the same old corporate greed and all you sheeple are there pawns. You simple minded dullards need to wake up and enter reality, and realize that possesions are for weak minded fools such as yourselves. You buy their expensive products and fall into debt all to support corporate gains. you sheeple are pathetic.

Easy to make profits when you make a $20 product and sell it for $80.

Just make sure the public doesn't know.

OSX is partially owned by microsoft, and was created by them at the beggining so you do have a point there. I just dont know how much microsoft gets for each MAC that is sold.

You can't play crysis on a mac because Microsoft did an excellent job creating directx and now even NVidia and ATI coordinate with Microsoft to create new releases of hardware + directx software. In the meantime, the design by committee behind opengl delivered failure after failure.

Now it is cheaper to create windows games, not only because of the marketshare, but also because directx provides a lot of stuff and works great with the last cards.
The downside is that games can only be ported across systems using a windows wrapper.

As for the apple hardware, I can say my mac pro 8800gt is able to run crysis very well if I boot in Windows.

Ain't it amazing how much of a profit you can get when you're charging over $300 for a piece of crap Ipod that took $22 to build…

If the rest of their profit margin is padded, then it's easy to see why they made a profit.

Pure thievery & gouging the hell out of their customers.

fudge, you are so right! apple's little players have far less features than alot of players out there, and the features that apples does have, dont work properly compared to the competition. there are lots of korean and chinese players out there with twice the battery life, that play hd video and output to an HDTV in hi-def. without the need to convert everything to hell. maybe apple is following enron's accounting system.
