Apple previews new version Mac OS, Snow Leopard

Apple surprised many today when it announced it would be previewing the next version of the operating system that runs on its Mac line of desktops and notebooks, Mac OS X 10.6, aka “Snow Leopard”. Despite questionable name choice, in its early stages it shows a lot of potential as an even more stable operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, featuring better 64-bit computing (a theoretical 16 TB, yes terabyte, of RAM is to be supported), full Microsoft Exchange support in its Address Book and Mail applications, improved multicore support through what Apple calls “Grand Central”, and a technology called OpenCL that puts more processing to the graphics processing unit. Apple also promises an improved media experience through QuickTime X.

“We have delivered more than a thousand new features to OS X in just seven years and Snow Leopard lays the foundation for thousands more,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “In our continued effort to deliver the best user experience, we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system.” More details available at official Snow Leopard promo website.

They’d better get this done pretty soon, Microsoft need something new to copy from for their next OS.

‘Snow Leopard’ as a name could get pretty confusing to some people.

16TB of RAM? Is anyone even using more than 8GB ATM? No one needs much more than that. Seriously, by the time technology is completely advanced, and we are using 16TB of RAM, we will be encoding movies in about one second, and probably by that time we will all have 100Mbit internet connections or higher, meaning we’ll download a 1CD release in 7 seconds. Sounds good to me.

Mac OSX copied alot of things. Actually MacOSX is based off a open source thing that they stole and sold anyways. XD

At least Microsoft programs it themselves instead of taking open source and selling it!

    @27,
I remember loving to use a Mac for my Multimedia work such as video, audio, 3d etc.

However i eventually switched to Windows for this. Since it works faster in windows now.

I lost all hope in Apple when they decided to discontinue their OWN processor line and decided to use Intel Chips.

Apple used to be a great company, they would go along and do their own thing, and everybody will be happy. Now that they jumped onto the bandwagon for hardware, now Macs aint Macs anymore.
This analogy is what macs is now:
Old macs when they were still using their processors were like KING. However now that they using other technologies…
Macs turned into mere cross-dressers, everything inside is almost the same as a PC. (Only differences is that the motherboard has a TPM chip on it too)

Mac is just a PC with a prettier custom case to it, which is why i say they are simply cross-dressers now! Macs = expensive whores now basically. If you get a list of their specs and check all the prices for it, you can notice that they are marking up their machine prices by like 25-30%….

Well… in my little opinion: they did a great job switching to Intel. The old IBM processors (G5 and below) were good at their times but arent competitive today: too slow, too hot, too expensive. The advantages from Macs nowadays are limited to design and OSX - and OSX is just great.

Because of my work I’ve had the privelage to work with PC, Mac, & Linux desktops as well as servers. I personally use linux for my servers, windows for my pcs, and mac for my ipods (hehe).

However traditionally Mac copies Linux, then Windows copies Mac, sometimes Windows copies Linux when they are on top of things.

In all fairness though it’s usually because there are soo many distros for soo many purposes. Pretty much any good idea or technology has already been done in one distro or another.

    @2

i make music with macs AND pcs (however hard i try i cant make my audio interface work fully with linux, otherwise id’ve given that a go too) personally, 16TB sounds good, but id like to see even more RAM - simply can’t get enough when you’re using a lot of software instruments and/or plugins, seriously. i have a hackintosh with 4GB and a PC with 8GB and neither one does everything id like it to do.

audio files are bloody big, and when you’re loading over 120 samples, each around 30seconds long, just to have a reasonably nice sounding piano 8GB gets paltry pretty quick (as soon as you start adding bass, drums, synths etc, not to mention effects). at the moment there are workarounds, more efficient ways of working, but ideally one day it’d be nice if making music on a computer wasnt 50% creativity and 50% resource management.

  61. hobag
    June 10th, 2008 | 17:04

and @51, of course you cant put 16TB in yet - the OS isnt even out, and doesnt have a system to run on, and as you point out, 4GB is the (commercially viable) limit at the moment for sticks of RAM. but i used to work with computers that had less RAM than my phone, hell they had less memory than single sided floppy disks, so dont kid yourself that 4GB is some pinnacle of perfection; its just the best we can deal with at the moment.

apple’s upgrade RAM is notoriously expensive, but frankly the fact that these pc fanboy geniuses (22, 47 et al), who call all mac users n00bs, are afraid of buying a bit of RAM from dabs and changing it themselves shows just how expert they really are.

here’s a thought for those of you who ONLY use PCs or ONLY macs - rather than becoming pointlessly entrenched in this turd-slinging partisan flame war, why not accept that you dont really know what youre talking about and STFU? if you dont use one or the other, you’re in no position to comment.

When Mac released Leopard, there was one version, inclusive of all the features. It’s fairly priced too.

When Microsoft released Vista, there were about 6 different versions, and the highest up one costs quite a significant sum of money.
And all the confusion of how to upgrade to what eh http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cb/Windows_Vista_Upgrade_Paths.svg they can’t just keep it simple.

I recently bought my first OSX product, a new MBP… The OS is neat but it does lag behind Windows in some respects, including hardware support. I was shocked to learn OSX does NOT support PurevideoHD and/or AVIVO/UVD H.264 or VC-1 accerleration in OSX (funny thing is the Nvidia 7300GS in the AppleTV does, but thats only an OSX 10.4-like OS). Sure my CPU can decode 1080P without dropped frames, but its still up around 80% CPU usuage. This is a tech that frees CPU cycles to do other tasks! Not that its a breeze to get working on Windows, but at least it can be done.

However I bought a MBP because at the time it was what I needed. A portable, powerful notebook with above average battery life. I mean I get 5 hours battery life with wifi on and downloading the whole time.

For what I wanted at the time (At least an 8600M GT VC, a LED backlit screen and a Penryn C2D, it was the only choice - the Dell XPS 1330M was close but only offered a 8400GS, of course 2 months later Dell started putting the LED backlit panl into the XPS 1530M which comes with a 8600M GT…

Unfortunately laptops aren’t quite at the buy components and put together stage like desktops are… I know I’d never buy an iMac or MacPro (Maybe a MacMini as XBMC on OSX is showing strides (handles 1080P content beautifully) and its the perfect form factor for a settop box)….

Though it was nice to bust a gut at my friends when his Pro would blue screen. Tears! Tears practically squirted out of my eyes!

Lets be honest, no operating system is anywhere near as good as it should be. They all need to stop adding new features until until they get all the old stuff working. Vista is absolutely pathetic. XP is all you need.

One of the nasty bits they never mention in the Mac vs PC commercials is that Apple comes out with OS updates every couple of years (ie. OSX 10.1, 10.2…10.5 which they give cutesy names to like Tiger, Leopard, Garfield, etc.) and Mac users have the privilege of paying $100+ for each one. These updates are spaced ingeniously to drain the user’s wallet slowly so that they don’t notice so much. In the Windoz world, this would be roughly equivalent to having to pay for SP1, SP2 and SP3. Ideally, Apple should only charge for major updates like OSX 11 and 12.

    @mac Observer
You 100% sure about that as being a mac user for x amount of years I could swear blind I get free updates, but hey what would I know I only had a mac for 9 years.
Soooooooooo remind me what the software update is for on my mac?
    Hmmmmm strange one

And strange how we do only pay for major updates like 0SX 11 and 12
But again what would I know

I have my homebuilt gaming pc at home that I’m always *fixing* so my fiance claims. I have my Dell laptop I use at work. and my macbook i use for everything else travel, media, etc… out of the 3 my macbook certainly is the most stable. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s better they all of their good/bad but everytime I open my macbook it’s on. I never see “returning from standby…..” or returning from hibernation…. or it’s dead or ….. you get the point. it’s on every time i open it. I don’t know anyone that can say that about a pc no matter the configuration.

I’ve owned pc’s for the last 15 years. I just bought this macbook 4 months ago. I am a “fanboy” of either.

Another example of Apple leveraging off Microsoft products to sell their OS. Better get Leopard right before you move on to a new OS.

I wonder if you can actually uninstall applications in this version without purchasing a 3rd party app.

10 million sales to apple vs 300 million to microsoft..geez apple is really taking over

leopard works, as far as ive ever seen. i push it pretty hard and occasionally i get a system overload message out of logic pro, which is just because im expecting too much of my RAM (running too many big sampled instruments) so it wont play back, but otherwise continues to work. 95% of the time when i do that in cubase sx on my pc, i get blue screen, restart and pray i saved recently.

everything else is flawless, as far as im concerned.

Snow Leopard comes with an array of strong under the hood features, ZFS-OpenCL-Multicore aware etc…rightfully so the Apple engineer says that they build the base for thousands features more to come. As i like to hate the Apple marketing team and their whole subculture the truth is that Micro$oft has nothing on OSX, plain and simple Apple puts very strong and very advanced technologies at each iteration of OSX and they’re not merely service packs…the ZFS filesystem that Apple ported from Sun Microsystems is THE total state of the art in filesystems, OpenCL will bring the power of the GPU on almost all the video/audio applications on OSX and Grand Central will give a huge speed boost to all applications. OSX builds and expands a very strong foundation with each release with some of the best tech available, Microsoft still copes with legacy, service packs and lack of enthusiasm. People understand more nowdays and the microsoft koolaid somehow lost its flavor…

It’s for getting those 50-350 MB security patches and bug fixes that Apple releases from time to time, kind of like Microsoft’s monthly “Patch Tuesday” only with WAY more flaws that needed to be corrected.

so my software update ive been given today for itunes and iphoto is a security patch?
and there was me thinking it was for giving me more stuff to play with.
more flaws? I see it as giving there customers more options and a better service?
Remind me how many probs has vista had?

I think its funny how pee cee users come onto something that is for a mac? whats wrong boys having a look at what ur missing out on??
dont worry u can have the new stuff in a few months when bill gates buys a copy of the new osx and copys half of it and changes the colour a little and moves it a little so its not a 100% copy :p

Yes, Mac does copy from OpenSource, but at least they are trying to improve and keep up the standard rather than how Microsoft try to compete against the standard.

I grew up with MS computers. ive only recently (last 3 years) been purchasing apple mac products and i think as a whole they are better than MS stuff.

i an see the advantage in both products. the biggest advantage with windows stuff is there is far more FREEWARE out there for windows AND there is far more software for windows that you can obtain cracks and serials for.

this, i believe, is why pee cee fanboys love their PCs so much, is that they are just too comfortable in using half-hearted software that only does half the job. they need 4-5 different programs to do the 1 task. either these programs are very cheap or a freeware.

take mac’s idvd for example. it will convert any movie onto dvd. it will even convert ntsc to pal with no dropped (or sped up) frames. this is just one program that comes standard with the iLife suite, a suite that came free when i bought my MBP.

Don’t really understand why there’s the whole fanboy thing thwarted back and forth, it’s just immature, I have worked for microsoft for a number of years, I own a Mac Pro, it runs windows better than most pc’s i’ve seen running windows, it runs os x most of the time though, and I ask, for the minimal markup price over pc hardware (which i custom configure on my windows boxes also) isn’t it worth it for the ensured stability that comes with an operating system designed for a small selection of hardware configurations as opposed to something that’s made to try get along with everything? (even the OSx86 project has its downfalls, although it is still as stable as windows :D ) Microsoft have the upper hand with game developers but i see this changing in the near future with more stable iterations of cider. Okay it’s built on darwin, which is an iteration of unix, which in many respects is open source, but heck its very polished, dos was unstable, even the newest versions of nt based architecture are more unstable than the unix core of os x.
They’ll always have their pro’s and con’s but thats what drives each of them forward, vista is doing poorly, the last service pack was only a small adjustment, Microsoft will have to work harder to keep apple’s market share down, as os x becomes a stronger, more compatible os.
I expect by the time os 11 is round, Microsoft probably wont have improved all that much and it’ll be fun to see what happens. But by no means do we need the ‘fanboy’ bickering, you’re just embarrassing yourselves.
