Apple negotiates about online movie rentals

The internet market is getting bigger and bigger with more companies moving their shops on the world wide web. And Apple is one of these companies for sure, especially now when they plan to launch a new movie rental service online. Apple is thought to be planning an online video rental service following the launch of its Apple TV box, which chief executive Steve Jobs hopes will be the DVD player of the internet age. The computer giant is rumoured to be in advanced talks with the major film studios to secure premium content. Apple already sells Disney and Paramount films over its internet retail store iTunes but other studios are thought to be loth to sign up for fear of damaging DVD sales. Rental could be a more attractive option.

The planned video-on-demand service is thought to offer 30-day rental for $2.99 and is expected as early as this autumn. Om Malik, on his closely followed tech blog GigaOM, said: “With Apple willing to give a bigger cut to the studios, which are frantically and desperately looking to shore up their shrinking DVD-related revenues, it won’t be long before the majors sign up for the new offering. “This download-rental move will put Apple in direct conflict with dozens of competitors, including the cable and phone companies. “The strategy is typical of Apple: it lets the market reach a point of confusion, and then starts offering a service that emphasises ease of use.” However, he notes that most home internet connections are not yet fast enough to download films in a reasonable amount of time: “The infrastructure challenges of such a service and the costs associated with it are another issue Apple will have to tackle.” Well, I guess they don’t plan to release movies in XviD, but that would be an easy solution as such a size allows majority of internet users to download them already.

Try 11.6 minutes for a 700MB file you moron. It’s called usenet, single connection at 1MB/s .

Every time I hear Mr. X talk about usenet it makes me laugh. Try downloading directly from FTPs like me then you’ll have something to brag about.

I, for one, have better things to spend my $9.98 a month on…like a faster internet connection for starters. But, to each his own, I guess.

I actually hope Apple and other companies go through with this, it will just make pirating THAT much easier for people. And that many more movies will be available to us.
