Apple iTunes blocked in China

Users of Apple’s music store in China have been reporting problems downloading music since the beginning of the week. Chinese authorities have not directly confirmed blocking iTunes. Requests for comment have gone unanswered, or reporters have been told officials had no information on the block. However, the timing of this latest blockage seems to coincide with the release of a pro-Tibet album by the Art of Peace Foundation, which was released on Sunday. Users across several threads in Apple’s support forums are reporting issues. The first reports came in Monday, and seem to be widespread.

Forty Olympic athletes reportedly downloaded the album in solidarity with the group, with some even downloading it once they arrived in Beijing, the Foundation said. Although Chinese iPod and iPhone owners have had access to iTunes, it doesn’t actually provide them with music, though it does provide iPhone users with apps. So users often find themselves logging onto overseas stores or even other services in order to download music. Apple did confirm that some were having problems with access within China, but declined to comment further. Users reportedly complained on Apple sites in China that the ban hurt users more than it did iTunes.

    It’s not that simple, interweb!

There’s 1000 years of history there, it’s a sovereign part of China, part of its identity. China’s never gonna let Tibet secede like USA’s not gonna let Texas secede. The Chinese government is pretty kneejerk about this kind of stuff though. Chinese are nationalistic like Americans, they’ll justify it to themselves. A nation is not a nation on top without some underhanded dealings – USA invades countries at will in the name of democracy.

Athletes dope, Phelps is probably on something, many are. You gotta do what you gotta do.

hang on a minute, why don’t the chinese just use open DNS to log anywhere in the world????

    or am i missing something

    @andy

Yes, you’re missing something. Open DNS won’t help you if the IP is blocked directly, instead of DNS name translation being blocked.

Post 5 didn’t make sense- it’s BS. One country considers human rights- the other throws human rights out the window with their POS Communist Government. FARK China.

As for Phelps, just because he is the best Olympian ever, he must be on something? Piss off. I’m Aussie and I think he’s done brilliantly, and he’s been tested already and shown no drugs. Get off your high horse.

China blocking iTunes because of some pathetic album that was downloaded 40 times is a joke- just like the “re-education” of 2 elderly ladies who applied for official protesting after their houses were knocked down for a highway. Or the British journalist arrested and manhandled for filming/reporting some Tibetan protesters who were hanging up flags or something….

China should have never gotten the Olympics, and the IOC is a joke. China can’t even look after its own people, most of whom are below the poverty line.

    16,

very true. IOC is the most corrupt organization, you thought after Samaranch, things would change for the better but changed to the worse.

now, the world should just ban China.

lol naive, there’re more people doping than not and you can’t test for the new drugs nowadays. At that level it’s so grueling even the best needs a little boost, and there’s a specialized industry out there catering to athletes. If everybody’s on something, you gotta do it too to even things out. Yeah, that’s right. Only difference is some are scapegoated, and some aren’t.

If you feel China’s human rights are not up to scratch then stop buying goods made in China.

If you feel China should let Tibet succeed then stop buying goods made in China.

If you feel it’s unfair that China won more Gold Medals than everyone else in the Olympics then stop buying goods made in China.

Or maybe you can do your bit by typing F@ck China on your Chinese made keyboard then use your Chinese made mouse to click the submit button that you can see on your Chinese made monitor.

So many foreigners spew out “Free Tibet”, but how many actually know the true history of the region?

    Very few I bet.

Even the Dali Lama has acknowledged independence is not his wish…
