Apple is world’s #3 smartphone maker now

Apple has staked a strong claim in the smartphone market. And it’s a good space to latch onto, as the worldwide smartphone market grew more than 29 percent and the North American smartphone market doubled in the first quarter of 2008 compared to a year ago, according to new research from Gartner. Apple, Cupertino, Calif., is the No. 3 vendor of smartphones, selling 1.7 million units worldwide to grab a 5.3 percent share of the market, Gartner said. Apple has built that share up from nothing, offering no smartphone in its portfolio until the debut of its iPhone in June, 2007. In the U.S., Apple is the No. 2 vendor, grabbing 20 percent of the market. Still, the vendor has a ways to go if it wants to hit No. 1 worldwide. Nokia, Espoo, Finland, holds that spot, selling 14.6 million units in the first quarter and grabbing 45.2 percent of the market. Research in Motion, Waterloo, Ontario, sits at No. 2, selling 4.3 million units to grab 13.4 percent of the market.

Globally, buyers snapped up 32.2 million smartphones in the first quarter, an increase of 29.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2007. In North America, unit sales more than doubled to 7.3 million. “Despite economic concerns, the smartphone market continued to expand in the United States, driven by heavy advertising and strong marketing promotions as more devices reached mass market price points,” said Hugues De La Vergne, principal analyst for mobile terminals research at Gartner, in a statement. “North American operators are giving these devices strong support, as they provide higher average revenue per unit (ARPU). We expect operators to continue to make these devices the focus of 2008 promotions.”

Hi, i like the iphone much more than the rest out there in the market, it is more intuitive, great screen, practical, etc..
maybe i will get one when it comes out, the gps and 3g are attractive features and if the pictures of the iphones in different colours and smaller shape then its a winner product that will get Apple to number one.

I have both N95 and Iphone, The N95 has a 5mp camara which I miss but I prefer the Iphone. Onces you start using a touchscreen, its not fun using a regular phone anymore.

Have come to the conclusion that Apple is for Wannabe’s really. Everybody raves about the eye candy like UI but the ammount of dropped calls on the IPHONE , the useless battery time, crappy pics made me switch back to Nokia one week after my glorius iphone purchase. But hey the icons look good…. pffft

Your comment about, once using the iPhone’s touch screen and how it makes so hard to go back to a regular phone, is so true. I too, have had both handsets in fact I’m using the N95 8GB now, but trust me, I wish I never sold my iPhone now. All I can do is hang on to this phone and wait for the 3G.v to launch in the UK :(

The iPhone, along with any Apple product, are overpriced, over hyped, and fraudulently advertised products.

Apple need an iPhone with a decent camera (anything less than 5MP is not acceptable) and at least 80GB storage if I’m to get it. Apple must also sort out the audio problem (it has weak bass, much like the 3G iPod), otherwise I will wait for the N96.

I’ve had my N95 for 15 months and I want something better (hence the N96) although it is still a great phone and I got an 8GB micro sd in it too which I will be able to use in the N96, giving me a reasonable 24GB of storage.

@19, hahaha. At LEAST 80GB, ey? Good luck finding an N96 with 80gb, you idiot.

My iPod Touch has way better sound than my N95. Then there’s Safari, email, and the TOICHSCREEN which totally own the Nokia. Not to mention screen realestate and thickness. I can actually WATCH movies on my Apple. Watching DIVX on my N95 sucks- way too small.

The N95-1 has a SDHC slot which can install upto 32 GB SDHC card. N95 can even access flash enabled website like youtube on its website with a firmware update. N95 has AGPS on latest firmwares. Music on the N95 is crystal clear with correct audio bass and treble in normal settings making the music sound more real compared to the iphone.

@9 Serefina: I NEVER get dropped calls on my Iphone. I am guessing is the area you live in or service provider you are using doesn’t have many antennas up in your area. The battery time compared to other phones, is quite low, but also take into consideration that it is used as a ipod and a mini computer just for web browsing. I personally charge my phone every night. It is not too hard to do. The camera does not take crappy pics. Most other phones out there do take “crappy pics”. The screen gives it a great crisp look. Youtube videos look awesome in my phone other than on my high definition monitor connected to my computer. The phone is practical for everday e-mails, and web browsing. The phone functionality is great. I never got a dropped call, only when I had a Nextel phone and on a nextel service. Other than that, I get all my calls and even with a push of a button on the screen (touch screen) I can put two or more calls at once to have a “phone meeting”.

    @20 K

You are such a rofltard… let’s see if you can understand this so pay attention and it might help if you write it down and read at your own pace.

I did not say that I would find the equivalent storage space on an N96 (as I said it would be 24GB) and the idea of having an iPhone is that it is an iPod and a mobile phone in one convenient package (I assumed this was painfully obvious but it seems to have illuded you). I would want an iPhone to replace my N95 and my iPod whilst I would not be looking to do the same when the N96 comes out.

Even though the N96 provides more storage space than an iPhone (and iPod Touch) with 16GB onboard and up to 8GB via micro sd, I like many others have a large mp3 collection spanning over 40GB, so I consider my previous statement to be justified.

Sure the iPhone’s screen is bigger than an N96’s and you can watch movies on it but the screen is still not as good as that of a PSP which currently has a maximum storage of 64GB onboard.

It seems like Apple is getting the idea though (as far as the iPod Touch is concerned) as they are releasing a 32GB model. It’s still only 16GB for the iPhone.
