Apple iPhone security hole is now official

According to a security consulting firm, the iPhone can easily be taken control of by hackers, leaving your personal information out in the open. According to the Maryland-based firm Independent Security Evaluators, hackers can take over an iPhone if a user accesses a Web site designed by the hacker. For example, an attacker can send an iPhone user an e-mail that says, “‘Check this link out. It’s great,’” Charles Miller, the firm’s principal security analyst, told ABCNEWS.com. If the user then clicks on the link to the site, the person controlling the site can access anything on the user’s iPhone, including text messages, e-mails, phone numbers and address books. In other words, hackers can access “stuff you don’t want people to know about,” Miller said.

If hackers connect the server to a computer, as the security firm did, then they can download all of the information. The firm began looking into potential security issues last Monday when the company’s founder, Avi Rubin, was showing off his iPhone, Miller said. “He gave us the proposition,” Miller said. “‘If you guys think you can do it.’ He gave us a week and an iPhone to play with.” When the firm made the discovery last week, it called Apple to warn about the issue. “They haven’t said a whole lot to us,” Miller said. “They basically acknowledged that they were looking into it.” Apple said that the company is looking into the firm’s report. “We always welcome feedback on how to improve our security,” said Lynn Fox, an Apple spokeswoman. The security firm also found that the iPhone could also be hacked using a public Wi-Fi connection, for example at an airport or a coffee shop, if the hacker set up an additional wall between users and the connection. Not everything looking perfect is actually that cool in these days…

… then the user is stupid and deserves it. But since iPhone is sold in US currently, I think it is possible :)

Well, iPhone got in the news because of all the hype.
But to be honest, this is just one of many phones that can be hacked in one way or another. From Windows Mobile to Blackberry to Nokia, all systems have been hacked at one time. Some more some less.

The biq questions, how quickly can they close the hole? That is more important since it is almost impossible to design something without glitches of some kind. If they fix it quickly (quicker than toshiba with their new windows mobile phone) it will bring good press. Give them thumbs up for support and as a result they will sell even more phones.

i have an iPhone and all I can say is that it is the best mobile phone/ pda in the United States today! I can’t picture life without my iPhone. Get this I can actually clock in at work and leave and still do the daily fundings without being there at my work computer because my iPhone will receive a web site certificate! That’s incredible. So I leave 3 hours early and the boss doesn’t care becuase I’m paid to do fundings and payroll. I just never open emails from sources I don’t know and I never wifi except at home. I use the AT&T edge network and it is sufficient to get my work done. Of all the people I have met that has an iPhone they will never go back to microsoft pda’s. Plus I can load all the files from RLS on my iPhone and blow peoples minds :) You gotta love RLSLOG.NET

I was just going to say the exact same thing, except for the US part. In this day and age, what kind of a moron are you if you try links like that out. Still, it’s a big fluke on Apple’s side.

More bad news for the iPhone:
    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/AppleWhackedByIPhoneWorrie.aspx

High expectations can produce big disappointments.

That’s what is happening to Apple (AAPL, news, msgs) today, after AT&T (T, news, msgs) reported that only 146,000 iPhones were activated in the second quarter.

Shares of Apple were down $3.75, or 2.6%, to $139.95 at midday on the news, which one analyst called a “reality check” for Apple. Shares had been down as much as $7.15 earlier this morning.
