Apple iPhone activation cracked by DVD Jon
Even as Apple iPhone mania refuses to die down, a well known hacker who goes by the name ‘DVD Jon’ has claimed to have found a way to use the iPhone sans AT&T’s network. A day before American Independence Day, on a blog suggestively named ‘So Sue Me’, and in a post pun-intendedly titled ‘iPhone Independence Day’, DVD Jon boasted of his prowess — that he had found a way to activate a brand new iPhone without having to sign-up for AT&T’s service. He wrote that this way — the iPhone will be devoid of phone capability — yet the iPod and Wi-Fi will continue to work. He teased, ‘So stay tuned’. An AT&T spokesperson however said that activating Apple’s iPhone using the AT&T network is necessary for optimum performance of the gadget. Besides, use of the iPhone sans AT&T’s two-year service contract is unauthorized.
The spokesperson warned AT&T would monitor similar situations, and take appropriate action if necessary. Meanwhile, Apple declined comment on DVD Jon’s claims. All said, the prolific hacker has to his credit a long history of attempts at cracking copyright controls on various Apple products. Nevertheless, his claims have unleashed a fresh wave of confidence amongst hackers that it won’t be long before iPhone users can port their service to the carrier of their choice, leaving AT&T firmly out-of-the-loop. However, security analysts do not share hackers’ new-found confidence in that they believe DVD Jon’s charades are in the least likely to put a dent in the iPhone’s chances for success, or have any bearing on AT&T’s contracts — past, present, or future…

They got telnet access now, just like those old cisco routers I used to tftp to. Every day get’s closer to unlocked for any sim card.
In my opinion, the best features of the iPhone are the Internet surfing, Google Maps, and YouTube. These won’t work with T-Mobile or Verizon. So I think that it’s not worth unlocking the phone.
Yeah cause Tmobile and Verizon block those sites at an application level. Get real, all providers have an internet package, all this will do is eat into whatever AT&T paid for the contract for exclusive access.
this doesnt support WCDMA nor 3G , this is eye candy at high cost ill stick with my 20 buck cellphone it does what is meant to do
Should you not atleast link or give credit to the person/site who wrote the text? This text wasn’t written by Martin, and almost all the time rlslog blatantly rip off text from other sites making it look like it is something they wrote themselves.
I don’t really care if they stole the text, but atleast know what you post on your own site. This ‘news’ has already been posted.

It would be news if the iPhone WASN’T hacked yet. Common, ever piece of hard/software is h/cracked short time after it’s release, that’s no news anymore…
And iPhone mania will not die down because it is a cool gadget, no matter what the haters say. I’m not an Apple fan (except the iPod), but they know how it’s done.
” He wrote that this way — the iPhone will be devoid of phone capability — yet the iPod and Wi-Fi will continue to work.”
Yeah, that sounds intelligent. Let’s buy a phone thats all shiny and spiffy, hack it, and then not actually have the ability to call anyone. Smart. *eyeroll*
People, please, lets just stick to release news…these sort of posts are not helping…double posted 3 day old news copy/pasted from another site…
sheeh…
so I think this is awesome, I have the iPhone and it is an incredible device minus the terrible AT&T network cell service. Actually I’d buy the device again just to use the wifi, iPod-(video/music) and google earth. To me it is that incredible of a device that I could go without the cell service. I’d like to know how to use the device minus the AT&T service.
