Apple introduces new iPod Touch, lowers prices
Apple Inc. slashed the price of the top iPhone by $200 Wednesday to bolster holiday sales, but also angered loyal customers who paid top dollar in the gadget’s first 10 weeks on the market. The company also revamped its iPod media player lineup, introducing a model called iPod Touch that incorporates the iPhone’s touch-screen and adds the ability to wirelessly download songs directly. It introduced a new version of the best-selling iPod, the Nano, that plays video. And it announced a partnership with Starbucks: Starting in October, the coffee chain’s icon will light up on the Touch whenever a user nears a shop that has Wi-Fi access. Users can then download the song that’s playing in that Starbucks shop or get a list of the 10 most recent songs played.
The new iPod Touch looks exactly like the iPhone. It has the same size, but 8mmis thinner, according to “We think it’s one of the Seven Wonders of the World.” said Jobs. “We’ve built WiFi in and we’ve made it USABLE. We’re REALLY excited about this.” Similar to iPhone, the iPod touch’s battery lasts for 22 hours of audio playback and five hours of video playback per charge, according to Apple.
Analysts expect Apple’s new iPods will help the company clinch yet another blockbuster holiday selling season. But it will also have to deal with investors who love Apple’s meaty profit margins and customers who are suffering from a bit of buyer’s remorse. The eight-gigabyte iPhone will now cost $399 – one-third cheaper than when it went on sale June 29. The four-gigabyte iPhone, which sold for $499, will be phased out. By comparison, the iPod Touch will sell for $299 for the eight-gigabyte model and $399 for the 16-gigabyte one. The steep price cut less than three months after the iPhone’s launch is a surprise from Apple, which usually keeps prices steady while adding new features and offers discounts only when a product begins to get old.

glad i didn’t pay over $600 for an iPhone. After tax it was probably $637-$640. Dumbasses. It will probably drop again before Christmas or they’ll over some deal not currently present.

My kids have iPods which means I’ve actually bought two of them. But for people who have a large MP3/Flac collection, like myself, they are pointlessly complicated (although I like the hardware, it’s just to obtuse to use). I think I like my PSP more than I would an iPhone. Drop and drag ability for mp3s and mpeg4s, it loses the phone (I hate phones, why do we need them 24/7 nowadays?- plus I drive right from my home phone to my work phone anyway) adds a gaming device (which I love, even with it’s limitations).

I agree with the guy above, creative makes kickass players. I’m happy with the 1g 1in thin player I have, I don’t need to touch it in naughty places.
People who bought the old price-tagged iPhone will get a 100$ refund, so they won’t feel too peed on. The price-cut was expected and very clever move.
Apple also released iPod 6G, now called “iPod Classic” which comes out in 80gb and 160gb editions with no big upgrades except the flash size. Prizes are 250$ and 380$.

The also released a “3G” version of iPod Shuffle, but the only really new thin there are the new,kind of weird colors (also Nano comes with these too). The prize and flash drive size are the same.
I personally already ordered the 8GB version of iPod Touch. With WLAN I can stream my music from with GNUmp3d, if I happen to need some more music, which I don’t believe, btw.
