Apple introduced new iMac product line

Apple has unveiled new all-in-one iMac systems, sporting an updated processor, more standard memory and a faster graphics card. Retail customers will be offered new systems with Intel Core2 Duo chips ranging from 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz. Apple will also offer a new 3GHz Intel chip as an option for built-to-order 24in iMac systems. All the new iMacs will feature a faster 1066MHz system bus and 6MB of level 2 cache. All but the cheapest of Apple’s three standard iMac offerings will now ship with 2GB of Ram. The $1,199 20in model will sport 1GB of Ram and an ATI Radeon 2400 XT graphics card. The $1,499 model will have a Radeon 2600 Pro card, as will the $1,799 24in iMac.

Apple will also offer the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS card as an option on built-to-order 24in systems. The new offerings mark the first major update to the iMac since August 2007, when a redesign offered a slimmer profile and a brushed aluminium casing. Apple’s latest financial report showed flourishing Mac sales, helping to boost the firm to record profits in the most recent quarter. Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple, said: “With the latest Intel processors, a faster new graphics option and more memory, customers now have even more reasons to love the iMac.”

    LOL at #1. You idiot.

Is this really newsworthy though? It’s not like a design refresh. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the laptops in the coming months….even though I just bought my MBP at the end of last year :(

Can you not install them yourself? With the price of RAM these days, and the deals on Ebay, why would anyone buy them at inflated prices? Unless you can’t install them, in which case go find the fattest teenage on your street and get him to do it.

If you open a MAC, do you void your warranty?

If I really wanted a Mac, I’d take out the AMD Quad Core and replace it with an Intel dual core, add a partition and download leopard.

But I’m not doing this though – Because I am *not* an idiot.

    Linux/Windows.

@5 — you don’t have to open up iMac to change the RAM. There’s a screw on the bottom face, right under the apple logo. Unscrew it, pop the old memory out, pop the new memory in.

    ***

I find it inteesting how much sway Apple seems to have with intel; and that they’re starting to utilise it. The 3.06ghz is custom for apple, and is the first of its kind to market. The MacBook air chip is also custom; (a miniturised version of another chip). Does any PC vendor get this kind of treatment?

Why would a MAC need something like an 8800 GS anyway? It’s not like we would be seeing Assassin’s Creed on MAC anytime soon.

  25. The_Doctor
    April 29th, 2008 | 13:17

@12 Yeah, 1 Gb of ram and you know what? Mac OS Will run circles around Windows any day with even 512k of Ram. You can’t compare the systems based on hardware without knowing the OS requirements, and Mac OS is not a memory hog at all, hence why they sell it with a Gig, always have, use to come with 512 which worked great for every “average” user out their.

See, people say Mac sucks, because it won’t play awesome games, or do all this awesome stuff… however.. Mac targets to audiences the best, the creative types and the the AVERAGE user, which comprises what? 90% of computer users? Offering them high stability, no need for all this adware and virus protection, and simplifying things (like no registry, no add/remove programs. You want to uninstall, you drag the app or “package” to the trash, and gone) These people don’t play awesome FPS games and know how to tweak XP, they are the people that have to take their PC’s to the fricken geeksquad each week, or pay some idiot from craigslist to remove adware. See, THAT is where Apple is going to defeat windows, along with a lot of fed-up techies. And it isn’t just browsing, Mac gives average joe an out of the box system to catalog and publish photos, track music, play movies, edit movies, upload photo galleries, video chat and etc. It does exactly what the average community wants. So, remember, not everyone in the world slaps together their own PC’s to play graphic intense games.. I believe that solitaire was the top game for how many years?

@5 along with being able to change the RAM, you CAN change the HD also, without voiding the warranty. They can’t stop you. The front glass is magnetic and comes off with a suction cup, giving you access to screws to remove the screen and replace the HD. Very simple. Unfortunately the processor is soldered to the board.

@18 yep, we all know that you can’t plug much in a mac, that’s one of many thing why it sux. and compare a ridiculous mac with any dell is hilarious :D it’s like compare a cute minivan with a fast sports car :’)

that piece of junk doesn’t seem as expandable as the dell, so they keep comparing absursds. mac is a clever company working for dumb people with money to burn.

as both a macos and a windows user i have to say that most apple people are deluding themselves with elitest ideals. they have totally bought into this whole mac esthetic number (jeez, look at the all those wires coming out of the back, how TERRIBLE), and have become dumber for it.

please stop pretending that macs are more secure or have no viruses. i encounter viruses and similiar supposedly “windows only” problems on macs nearly every day in my job.
and don’t get me started on mac font problems, network problems or the safari browser.

a computer is a tool. i will use whatever tool works the best and most efficiently. i’m not a fan of anything. as soon as you’re a fan, you’ve lost your perspective and your chance to improve yourself – remember, fan is the short form of fanatic.

Maybe a better comparison would have been against THIS Dell machine, which is actually a competitor to the iMac, not something completely different.

well, #35 (SOM), if they did that, they would not seem very elite or cool anymore would they?

apple has to perpetuate the illusion that only apple inovates, is stylish and works properly, otherwise they would have been dead long ago.

don’t get me wrong, apple makes a good product; just not as awe-inspiring as they would have their fanatics believe.

actually a great marketing strategy, i’ll give them that.

sorry for the wake up but…

if you want to play games properly you get a PS3 (your standard ‘beige box’ will ever rival the big gaming consoles on that….
so whats the real problem? you know the MAC is way beyond superior to any PC ever made (for the sheeple anyway) so get the PS3 and a top of the range MAC and install a linux/OSX dual boot system (maybe windoze if you really want) and you are king.

again. Proper gamers get a roper gaming console, not a PC.

I am an IT guy (database) and I use XP & Linux at work. I got to use a MacBook Pro exclusively for a week when I travelled with my friend who brought his MBP along for work. I bought one for myself after the trip! I am just so sick of having big ass PCs at home (and they’re already Shuttle XPCs!) Now, all I need is inside my 15.4″ MBP! I LOVE IT!

XP & OSX are both good, it took me some time to get everything I need up & running but eventually I found free OSX alternatives to everything I had on Win XP. (except uTorrent, which I now run on Darwine.)

Still, I won’t buy an iMac, what’s the point?! I can build a XPC much cheaper! Only MBP makes sense, when u need a top of the line laptop to replace your desktop! MBP FTW!

Looks do count and Mac have been consistently stylish throughout its transformation. This debate also is pitting all the current consumer PC against the iMAC but realize this, Apple also make expandable, more powerful stand alone desktop computers. And, how many PC out there has an all-in-one unit like the iMAC? Look at this marvel! LCD monitor, HD, Speakers, 2 firewire ports, remote control, camera, mic…. all in one slim size! Apple did it first and did it best. Everyone else is just trying to copy and catchup. Sales figures do not lie and no matter how many PC users hate MACs, they are kicking ass in retail sales. Accept it folks and live together!

“Looks do count and Mac have been consistently stylish throughout its transformation.”
    great argument – i’m speechless.

“how many PC out there has an all-in-one unit”
use google. and for your information, apple did not do it first, neither did microsoft – although msdos WAS the os on it.
however, the first “modern” computer to do this was not the imac, it was from ibm (lcd etc).

    “Sales figures do not lie”
you’re right, thats why your statement is incorrect. in relation to apple sales IN THE PAST, macs are selling more. But pcs are still outselling macs 10 to 1 (again, use google).

“no matter how many PC users hate MACs…”
mac fanboys just don’t get it. pc users (most of them) don’t hate macs, they despise the mac-user that acts like a hari-krishna trying to sell a god to us.

if you would stop inventing “facts” you would be much more believable – you do more harm to your cause than anything.

again, macos is a good product (not great).
windows is a good product (not great).
both have problems, even if macfans refuse to admit it.

    g-night!

In Detroit it’s frowned upon to not buy an American auto. Of course there are lots of foreign jobs on the road, but to point out “trendies” you often see VW’s with a MAC stickers on the back window.

DOes anything more need to be said?

  47. Atlas
    April 30th, 2008 | 01:12

Not an innovative product. Same idea as those Macintosh all-in-ones from the 80’s/early 90’s that booted from floppies. Epic Fail, everyone hated them.

Hate the lack of hackability, but can’t fault the screen. Although to turn me to the Mac side, this mac needs to have a portrait-landscape swivel for the screen and the screen needs to be touch sensitive and removable so that i can sketch with a pen-like instrument.

I should be able to use advanced finger motions and use all 10 fingers, or combinations such as left hand + pen. This of course will not happen, because when it is a sacrilidge to provide a 2 button mouse (i swear, Mac’s conspire to make you left handed because of all the shift-like on the bottom left of the keyboard.)

If mac is an innovator, it would have the features i describied. But it does not. Unless “nothing special” is a feature, this is a fairly bland setup.

  48. Stephen
    April 30th, 2008 | 01:12

Yeah the XPS One is definitely just a concept.
    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/4x_xps_one?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd

Or there is the $1300 Gateway One GZ7108 for the lower end of the market.

Or the £1200 Sony VAIO VGC-LT2S for the top end, or the even better models for more money. (The 3.06Ghz model cost £1,389 in the UK)

And all of those will run any Linux distro.

And those that say they choose iMac because it is tidy and they really dislike Windows will have a cheaper (and probably more compatible) option soon, the $499 (+~$100) ASUS E-Monitor.

The mac / windows feud is getting rather lame these days. I use both. My PC for gaming, and my Mac for editing movies (work). I’ve also worked with PC’s in the past and have no regrets at all of switching to macs, they’re simply better for what I do. Anyone working with media, design, etc. that have used both macs and pc’s will surely agree with me ;]
