Apple cuts price of MacBook Air by $500

Apple Inc. has quietly reduced the price of its most expensive notebook by $500, cutting the cost of the upper-end MacBook Air to $2,598. The MacBook Air, which Apple launched in January to some fanfare, has been sold in two configurations since then: with a traditional 80GB magnetic platter hard drive and a 1.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, or with a 64GB solid-state drive and a 1.8-GHz CPU. Solid-state drives (SSD) are built from flash memory and, unlike hard drives, have no moving parts.

The MacBook Air with the solid-state drive is more expensive than the one with the hard drive, but several Apple-specific Web sites, including AppleInsider, noticed that Apple had dropped the price of the SSD-equipped model by 16% on Thursday, July 3. Prior to the price cut, the solid-state MacBook Air sold for $3,098. The less expensive hard-drive-equipped MacBook Air retained its $1,799 price tag, according to the Apple online store. The price cut came from changes on two of the MacBook Air options. Selecting the SSD now adds $599 to the price of the notebook, compared to $999 earlier. Also lowered was the 1.8-GHz processor option, from $300 extra to $200.

So now the MacBook Air is a little less overpriced.

And really, how useful is a 64GB hard drive nowadays?

Lol the whole point of the Macbook Air? “IT’S SO SUPER SMALL AND LIGHTWEIGHT LOLOL” And you have to carry an external harddrive with you, oh wow.

64 GiGs… Vista would use damn near all of that lol Perhaps the Mac OS is less filling :)

    July 7th, 2008 | 03:17

hang on, you need to carry around an external HD, you can only run 11 applications on OS-X, it has only one port, doesn’t have a disc drive, and it costs 10x more than a Eee

great, where can I get one?

  9. Google
    July 7th, 2008 | 03:19

But you can get much better laptops with $1799 dollars. Of course, they’re not going to be light weight, but they certainly can be more powerful at that price. :] I have a laptop 2.5 GHZ Core-duo, 3 GB of ram, and 250 GB harddrive, and it cost me $1,300. And if I so chose to, I could put OSX on it or Leopard or whatever. I just don’t see the point of spending that kind of money on an object that “small”. But then again, if you got the money, who the hell cares?

Who cares if its an inch or 2 thinner than other laptops, my laptop is under 2 inches and at a third of the cost can out perform that air in every way.

  13. ripptyd
    July 7th, 2008 | 03:39

That notebook isn’t meant to out perform other notebooks. It’s meant to make traveling with a notebook for less intensive tasks easier. Want to play games, download music and videos? Use a freakin’ desktop.

I would have loved a notebook like this when I was in college. Something super light weight, and something for me to take my notes on in classes.

Apple knows this laptop isn’t for everyone, that’s why they didn’t push it so hard. They also know people who would buy this have the extra cash flow to do it, and probably have a desktop or another laptop for heavy duty tasks.

I’ve just bought an 1.7 GHZ, 1 g portable with 80G (new HD) and I paid 200 $ case, wifi card and batterie included. I use it as a spare to f** around on the net. Who care if its 2.5 inches thick!!! 1799$ is a lot for ”air” LOL

I first noticed the SSD technology from Alienware (http://www.alienware.com) when I was dream-pricing a custom notebook and looked further into the hard drive as it was/is an exciting concept (Dimensions: (W)14.55″ (D)10.73″ (H)1.3″):

Solid State Drive Bundle: 64GB Solid State Drive + 120GB 7,200RPM (8MB Cache) Smart Bay w/ Free Fall Protection [+$700]

    Another nice option:
    2x Dual Layer Blu-ray Disc Burner (BD-R, DVD±RW, CD-RW) [+$400]

Still not worth that much money. At most I’d pay $1000 for it, especially since it comes with crappy Mac OS X by default.

    1. Macs are for big hairy men
    2. The 25 programs I am currently running defy Hendersons statement at #8
    3. Yes it is expensive, If you can’t afford it then it is likely you aren’t a frequently travelling businessman as is apples target market market for the air.
    4. Yes it is over priced, but as already stated this is not being sold to poor people.
    5. Yes it is missing some features that standard users appreciate, but I certainly do not find myself in great need of a cd drive when traveling, or ANY time as a matter of fact except when ripping music cds, which since I do that at home I can use that Macbook Air wireless cd drive software for.
    6. Macbook Air… NOT lots of hot air! Actually it’s very cool running
    7. Most of what enterprise users need when traveling is a small amount of video media though never much, and the rest is generally text. 64gb would suffice for containing about half the books in the world in terms of pure text alone, so 64gb is hardly limiting there.
    8. Yes a faster laptop can be built or bought for less but it won’t be a mac, it won’t look as professional (image is very important in for executives in most lines of business) and it won’t be as compact.

If the MacBook Air is not your ideal laptop then don’t insult it just because you can’t afford it. Move on in your life and do something productive, like REproduction. That’s always fun.

Macs (or OS X) is far easier to use than a PC. It’s basically designed so that even newbs and idiots can use them, but without excluding the more savvy consumer.

I personally love the simplicity and functionality of the OS X, it suits my needs if all i needed to do was web browsing, typing, look at media files etc.

but fact is, i like PCs more because i can upgrade my own hardware and customize almost everything i want.

My god if i’d realized that before now I would never EVER have liked using a mac. All these TECHNICAL and ACCURATE FACTS are confuzzling me! My logic has been defeated!… “No sense”…, it’s just so profound. CONGRATULATIONS on this most astute of comments. And adikt, when I feed 400 + 100 into my APPLE POWERED scientific graphing calculator my finding is such that 500 is indeed the accurate result of the addition of these two numbers. Clearly your NON-MAC scientific graphing calculator is suffering from a stroke and is incapable of performing the basic math that the more intellectually accomplished members of society have achieved. Yes macs may be “Lots of dollars” but at least they can add multiple numbers together CORRECTLY. What is this? The Planet of the Apes???

Planet of the apes? guffaw! haha! er….

Really I don’t give a poot what laptop you use. I went to a shiny new MAC store the other day in uptown Denver. I just sat and watched the people. Yeah, owning a MAC certainly says something about you, I’m just not sure it’s what MAC users THINK it says.

To the person that says it’s light and can carry it to class for notes. Well so is a pencil. Just saying an Eee would make more sense if you MUST have a laptop these days that is but a shiny word proc. A $2500 typewriter? But I’m old and graduated without a laptop, so take it with a grain of salt.

All that said, if you have the money and really really like something it does, who am I to tell you not to? I just don’t see anything it does that something else doesn’t do better cheaper and less “fashionably”. But I don’t have the same needs as everybody else.

I am hoping the people in that store aren’t the everyday MAC users because they seemed so vapid, buying shiny new consumer tools for their uninspired existence. Might be more a comment on upper middle class than MAC, but those often intermingle.

    @rrpostal

The point of my post was pretty much to admit that the Air wasn’t for everyone. Yeah, you can take your notes with paper and pencil, but if most of your classes are given as PowerPoint slides (which mine were), let’s be honest, it’s just a hell of a lot easier to open the slides and type up the additional notes.

It’s a situational laptop, for sure. As I said, it’s for people who can afford to have the second laptop, or the main desktop. Just because you may not find the Air worth it, doesn’t mean other people won’t. It’s all opinion.

I wish I went to school in a time when you could get class material in powerpoint. Maybe it’s time to get back to grad school. Think they’ll let my bring my big, fancy, loud gaming rig to class? I wonder how much the tech is really helping students learn? I thought it was cool when my classes were carried on local cable so I could watch lectures from the couch. Never did so well in those classes.

  38. ripptyd

    @rrpostal

LOL, yeah, they totally won’t mind the gaming PC. Repeated clicking FTW, no? I was tempted to load up WoW a time or two, while I was in class.

It actually helps a bit for my learning style. Some people need to write down every bit of info. Some like seeing the information in front of them and elaborating within the notes. It gives you the chance to focus more of what’s being said, rather than the furious note scribbling. I was in the latter group, but I had some classes where I needed the extra reinforcement (note scribbling).

it was built for those people who carry a notebook a lot and by a lot i mean really freakin’ a lot. it is light and thin so it is easier to carry it and those people want a notebook as light as possible no matter the costs or power

in my grad lectures i see people wasting time on their laptops. like once one of them was showing off his tuned BMW on his MAC.

i can get the printouts of the Presentations or can even download them in advance if needed and can read them on my mobile with a approptiate software. in worst case i have to ask my professor for the printout of the used slides.

I’ve had those hippy profs who would rather save a tree then have you print out pages. How that cancels out energy used by notebooks, I have no idea. I also had the profs who required you to bring your laptop to class, every class. May as well just take your notes on the files then.

The price drop came coincidentally on the same day tomshardware released an extensive research on their part demonstrating that SSD hard disks have little to no benefit, and in some cases are actually more damaging, to battery life when compared to standard hard disks.
