Just use VLC. It does everything even ripping DVDs and converting them to whatever.

Like @2 (Smeg) said, VirtualDub. Perhaps a little technical for some, but I’m betting a technophile like you could pick it up in no time. And most importantly, it is VERY VERY FAST. I haven’t found anything that can process video at the speed Vdub does (and I’ve tried LOTS of software, Vegas, Premiere, After Effects, etc). Good luck!
