Anti-piracy warning on DVDs now twice as long

Hollywood and the federal government have partnered to create updated and even more annoying anti-piracy warnings that will be included in new home-release DVDs and Blu-ray discs beginning this week, the government said Tuesday. The new warnings now have three scary logos intended to deter those who might violate copyright law by making a back-up copy, ripping a movie to a tablet-friendly file, uploading it to a peer-to-peer network or make illegal copies to send to military service members in Iraq.

The original logo has been included since 2004 on the Motion Picture Association of America members’ movies, with the now-famous FBI tough-talking “anti-piracy warning label” which cautions customers who legitimately purchased a movie about the criminal penalties for copyright infringement. Added alongside the FBI’s logo in the new version, however, is a Homeland Security Investigations “special agent” badge. That reflects the agency’s new power, handed down in 2008, to seize web domains engaged in infringing activity under the same forfeiture laws used to seize property like houses, cars and boats allegedly tied to illegal activity such as drug running or gambling.

What’s more, as an added bonus that’s even better than a James Cameron director commentary, movie fans will be treated with a second annoying screen (above) touting the National Intellectual Property Center. That screen, like the others, presumably will be made unskippable during viewing. The warning says, “Piracy is not a victimless crime. For more information on how digital theft harms the economy, please visit www.iprcenter.gov.” The center’s logo is tough, too, with a hawk clenching a banner that reads “Protection Is Our Trademark”.

That just encourages piracy as those releases don’t have those annoying unskippable clips.

And Homeland Security? They’re going to shoot pirates?

    May 14th, 2012 | 19:04

Why do they keep punishing people that legally buys movies and stuff(games with their painful online checks)? maybe people that buy legit stuff likes to stare at a bird and FBI logos and warnings

Actually encourages rippers so they can edit out the annoying warning. And for those that want to just view the warning … edit out the movie and loop the warning for hours of enjoyment.

    Right, only on the net.

“USA has no right to enforce their stupid laws on every country in the world….”

It is only, supposedly “stupid” to piraters when it infringes on their pirating ways. Douchebag.

6 billion people and they think they can stop us all. We may all not be doing it, be sooner or later someone we know will be or we will be.

At the end of the day, people are a lot smarter than they were say 30 years ago when all this piracy crap starting to kick in, and everyone knows their way around a computer, and most people know how to make copies of films.

So bring it Mr Government Man, you gonna arrest everyone.

Like others here I’m baffled how they think this could achieve anything but annoy legitimate buyers! It’s ridiculous how out of touch the film/tv industry is. The music industry were dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century with iTunes and YouTube, and now they’re happily making money off both. All the music I have is legit because it’s easy to buy.

And for the love of god stop putting out ridiculous figures about how much money is being lost to piracy. If I like something I will buy it but almost all the stuff I download is freely available TV which I download for the convenience of being able to watch it when and how I want, or stuff I would never buy in the first place.

    a dddd question……………….

how come the fbi homeland security warning doesnt say do not make uploads or download it??so if it not on there so surely uploading n downloading isnt a crime also this it doesnt mention do not make the file available on filehost either??so couldnt kim dotcom use that arguement against the american goverment?? it doesnt say do not store the file on a filehost it doesnt say do not upload or download it so basically this fbi warning is about as void as putin legit win in russia :)

Given the whole thing, I have no sympathy. REAL piracy takes property & deprives the owner of the original. Copying isn’t piracy, despite the rhetoric. Then again, maybe anyone taking pictures at an art gallery should also feel the wrath of the homeland insecurity too, as they’re taking copies of expensive artworks…

Or OMG, better outlaw radio too! It’s not like we PAY for the radio we listen to…

And with all the blatant product placement in movies & TV… Suffice to say the advertising angle, should more than make up for the theoretical losses.

In the meantime, I’ll keep on downloading.
