Another 0day exploit for MS Office

It’s not a long time since I wrote a post about new zero day exploit for Microsoft Word and you may be in danger once again. This time with Microsoft Excel, in almost all versions. In its security advisory issued Friday, Microsoft warns people of a “very limited” zero-day attack that takes advantage of vulnerabilities in the Excel spreadsheet program. We all know these very limited vulnerabilities – it usually end with every second computer being hacked or at least infected with some worm or virus. The “extremely critical” Excel vulnerabilities are found in Microsoft Office 2000, Office 2003 and Office XP, as well as in Office 2004 for computers running Apple’s Mac OS, according to a separate advisory from security company Secunia.

Attackers are sending e-mails with malicious Excel attachments and are hosting Web sites that house Office files that attempt to take advantage of the security flaws, according to Microsoft. Once an attacker exploits the vulnerabilities, they can gain control of a person’s system remotely. Yeah, we are talking about complete control of remote system. And if you think you are not in danger because you simply do not use Excel, think again: “While we are currently only aware that Excel is the current attack vector, other Office applications are potentially vulnerable,” Microsoft said in its advisory. Great news!

    I’m running Vista Ultimate and Office 2007. All those previous generation MS application exploits don’t work on me!

    Btw, Vista may be FULL of bugs and stuff but that’s basically the fun part of every new Windows version. :P

    it this bug doesn’t affect Office 2007, then i declare a conspiracy by Microsoft to try to force people to upgrade to Vista/Office 2007.

    bah, i’ll declare it anyways. Microsoft created and released this new hack. it’s a marketing ploy.

    :) Super cool. There is a secure way to use Microsoft’s software… Unplug your internet connection…
    And I too think there is a Microsoft’s conspiracy to force people to buy Vista…

    “There is a secure way to use Microsoft’s software…”
    => Yeah, don’t install it.

    “It is said that if you play a Microsoft Windows CD backwards, it will summon Satan. That’s nothing. If you play it forwards, it installs Windows!”

    If you must, put it in a virtual machine (using VMware, Parallels, etc). That way, if it fucks itself, it doesn’t take the WHOLE BOX with it!

    Its does raise suspicion though, every version of Office is affected, EXCEPT the one they want you to buy!

    I don’t use MS Office anymore (since Office97). Its no longer my problem. Hell, I don’t even feel its worth pirating to begin with!
