Americans love their cell phones more than TV

Americans would find it harder to part with their mobile phones than the Internet, television or landline telephones, according to a survey released Wednesday. The report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project also found that Americans are using their cellphones and other wireless devices for more activities including text messaging, taking pictures or sending email. Some 51 percent of those surveyed said they would find it hard to give up their cellphones, compared with 45 percent for the Internet, 43 percent for television and 40 percent for landline phones. “When asked how hard it would be to give up a specific technology, respondents are now most likely to say the cellphone would be most difficult to do without, followed by the Internet, TV, and landline telephone,” the report said.

this is where the story ends…

“This represents a sharp reversal in how people viewed these technologies in 2002,” when the landline telephone was the favorite technology, he said. The report said that among the 75 percent of Americans who own a mobile phone or similar device, most are expanding the way they use it. About 10 percent have watched videos, while 58 percent have sent or received text messages. Nineteen percent have used the devices for email or to access the Internet. The study appears to confirm that text messaging is important for younger technology users. Sixty percent of those aged 18-30 send or receive text messages on a typical day, compared with 32 percent for those in the 30-49 age group and 14 percent in the 50-64 age bracket. The survey questioned 2,054 adults between October and December 2007.

    damn thing always rings when i go have a nap on the sofa so I, not being american though, would be happy to part with telephones altogether
    also people were a lot more social before phones, you could go visit people without calling a week in advance
    (although the good thing is, no need anymore to put up with loud friends who do not understand to get f out when it’s 10pm)

    but yesterday the net was not working for three hours or so and i got severe withdrawal symptoms and had nothing to do so actually went out for a beer

    Coming from the land of bad teeth, bad food, and whor- er, working class stiffs who can’t be bothered to move to where the work is — all the while complaining they have no work and sitting their fat dole collecting, council house living arses, I guess you’d know something about being fat, ugly and lazy — not mention butt stupid.

    Why can’t you take a little bit of criticism? I don’t think I was being stupid or screaming curse words.

    I do not mind the odd bit of tech news which has something to do with blank media and what have you, but in the past months tech news is just becoming too much.

    950 tech news entries Vs 940 DVDrips

    Tech news should not be taking over RLS posts. I think you should tone it down a bit and keep the tech news.

    I like the tech news; its good.. I find out about new microprocessers, or how the iphone has been hacked and what not. if its something that bores me, i skip it… problem solved.

    but at the risk of sounding unamerican.. who cares if the yanks like their ‘cell’ phones more then other mediums..
    what does that have to do with the UK, or asia, of the aussies? where are the tech-specific news for our countries? (cause I am sure everyone would love to hear about how someone found a laptop in a kangroos pouch)

    As an american I don’t believe this, nor does anyone I know. It makes me upset when I see a poll that says Americans would rather this or Americans think that, they didn’t ask all of us, so don’t take it seriously.

    why is it that people think the british have bad teeth? is it because the american’s all use bleech? ur ridiculously stupid if you think teeth are supposed to be THAT white, but the worst thing is you go and get a fake tan so that makes them look EVEN dumber.

    @8 gavrielle

    whor*s??? every country in the world has them, and america being bigger and having a higher pop i wudd guess they have more. by the way trailer trash have bad teeth, are ALL whor*s, cook dead things they find on the road, never work, live in high risk tornado areas and complain about getting hit by them…. yet are too lazy, fat, ugly, disgustingly poor wasters to hook up their trailers and move. whos the dumb fu*ks now?

    @13 teaser

    someone should teach the americans to speak english, stop interfering in other peoples business and to cook. YES cook i missed the part when americans gave masterclasses in cooking…Ooo right flipping them burgers needs talent, skill and years of training.

    All in all, you dumb americans should respect the land that gave birth to your missguided dumb fu*k of a country. we are older and bigger so dont forget that.

    All this shows is that Americans that are pathetic enough to take a survey love their phones.

    To say you would rather have a cell-phone than the internet just shows these people do not understand how the internet works.

    Actually, now that I type that out, I guess that is a majority of Americans. Sh_t.

    unfortunately americans (or any culture en masse)aren’t too intelligent (e.g. internet + VoIP = land-line + internet)

    *shrug* imo, this survey is fodder.

    Scenario 1: People don’t know what they hell they prefer — cellphones? pff. They should be smacked in the head to take up.

    Scenario 2: There are 3 types of lies: big lies, medium lies, and statistics. Don’t tell me 2,054 people represent 301,139,947 (July 2007 est).

    The conclusion is this — if you’re American, buy more cellphones; you obviously love them (but probably don’t know it yet).

    Congratulations for taking part in their marketing campaign, Martin! :D

  26. YeahRight
    March 6th, 2008 | 14:56

    Out of curiosity, and ignoring that this “survey” is shockingly idiotic and clearly naught save a marketing tool, how exactly does one go from “Americans love cell phones more then TV/Internet/Landlines” to “Americans are fat and lazy”? Doesn’t one primarily use a cell phone when NOT sitting on the couch (especially when landlines are specifically mentioned)? Wouldn’t the bon-bon stuffing TV watchers that Americans all supposedly are have preferred to give up anything but TV rather than TV being next to last?

    I do realize that expecting logic or sense out of mindless bigots would be foolish at best and that all that’s really involved here is the term “Americans” was in the title so we must be sure and post an idiotic stereotype or three, but the jump involved in todays requisite America-bashing seems even more mentally deficient than usual.

    My take on things is that, in America, great people can do great things, thanks to a part of the inherited American ideology of individualism and such.
    This does not however change the fact that most Americans are stupid/religious, and only follow these ideals because it’s patriotic/nationalistic.

    However, most people on this planet are stupid, so don’t feel bad.

How these snarled toothed colonial bastards are ever taken seriously is beyond me.

    Keeping telling yourselves your better than everyone else if it makes you happy. Its quite obvious your not. Overall crime is higher in the UK, you throw bottles at one another before and after football, yes, very civilized.

    Your modern military history is one of defending an island 12,000 miles from your homeland, with more sheep than people. Its kind of a joke really.

    Cry some more about the burden you are shouldering in Afghanistan. Those brutal 6 month deployments, how unfair. Actually having to fight a worthy enemy, how unfair.

    USA = hegemony

    (if you don’t know what this means, look it up before saying anything stupid, i’m attempting to educated the rampant-running mindless who post here)

    let’s see… 1 + 2 = …

    the hegemony will *always* be in contest with other political entities, that’s the way of things. ergo, until another many many OTHER poles come into play as near-hegemony, there will be a unipolar “f-u america”-sentiment in all other places.

    if (ever) the world reaches multipolarity THEN things get better.

    @18

    The British have the most horrible foods. No spice, no flair. At least MacDonald’s has a special sauce that isn’t made of hogs lard and Kentucky Fried Chicken, with more than 20 herbs and spices is the coating, is always edible. This cannot be said for your greasy fish and chips or nasty jellied eels. Even your Indian food is as bland as your island, though it’s mildly spicy flavor is the reason it is so popular now.

    Your teeth, along with the rest of Europe’s are crooked, as well as yellowed from badly made teas. You believe you make a proper cup of the stuff, but the Chinese would beg to differ. A decent cup of coffee, unless it comes out of Starbucks or any other American style coffee shop or French, Italian or Turkish cafe cannot be found among the freeze dried loving populace.

    English women of all classes have turned to prostitution in previous generations, more frequently than most out of necessity, because your greedy middle classes thought filthy workhouses where mothers and children were separated were a perfectly acceptable way to deal with poverty and homelessness. The poor saw it differently. Therefore, if your family has lived in any British town or city for more than a century, you are no doubt descended from the son or daughter of a woman forced to whore herself out in order to survive.

    Luckily, in America, the workhouse phenomena was supplanted by slavery. Another British import, by the way.

    Empires do what empires have always done and will continue to do – act imperialistically. Lucky for the US that our European brethren taught us how to do it right by making so many bass akward mistakes when they had the chance. Coca-cola, movies, music and useful technologies are a much better way to win, if not the hearts and minds of client states like Britain, then the contents of their pockets. Which is all we really want, you know. As an early twentieth century business man once told the British ambassador of the time (after he commented on how we looked to become an empire in the future): America doesn’t want to rule the world, we’d rather own it. And the world’s population, dumb as posts most of them, still hasn’t figured out that they’ve already been Americanized for more than a generation.

    Most railway tracks in Russia today were made from steel shipped from America in WW2. If Germany was given the lend lease that Russia got, they would have won the war easily.
