Two accused Genovese crime family associates – including the reputed ringleader of the crew – haven’t yet entered their guilty pleas, but sources on both sides of the law say the unusual mob home invasion case is over.

No one is more disappointed at this turn of events than Teutul, whom we are sure would have loved the publicity to help plug his show. For those woefully ignorant of such things, Teutul is the star of The American Chopper, the reality-based cable TV show in which he and his sons custom build motorcycles. The motorcycle maven’s latest series begins tonight on the Discovery Channel’s sister station, TLC.

Normally, tonight’s viewing audience would not include members of the allegedly violent mob crew said to be responsible for the home invasion. But several of the accused marauders will be able to put their feet up and watch as Teutul and his sons design and build a chopper that honors the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.

This potential viewing audience includes two key players in the home invasion – Louis Pipolo, a nephew of late Genovese
crime family boss Vincent (Chin) Gigante, and John (Rocky) Melicharek, the leader of a multi-ethnic team of hoodlums with Italian and Albanian lineage.

Both are working hard, legitimately it seems, to help prepare their families for their upcoming stretches in federal prison.

Pipolo is a partner in the upscale Italian eatery, Mulino’s of Westchester. And though he no longer is pictured along with other owners on the popular White Plains restaurant’s website, the place’s liquor license is still in his name, according to court records.

Meanwhile, Melicharek, 37, toils as an ironworker for D’Annunzio & Sons, a New Jersey construction company that is rebuilding a New Jersey Turnpike entrance ramp on the Jersey City side of the Holland Tunnel.

Pipolo pleaded guilty last month to picking up the robbery team and helping them get away after Melicharek abandoned them when he was stopped by a cop and
decided to make himself scarce. Not only did the home invaders have to run for their lives, they also fled empty handed when they could not find a cache of cash that was hidden in the attic.

Pipolo, 45, (left) faces about six years in prison.

Sources say that Melicharek – the lone remaining defendant in the case – is likely to face twice as much time, according to the terms of a tentative plea deal that his lawyer Barry Levin and federal prosecutor Elie Honig, are still haggling about.

Sadly, the opposing attorneys, Teutul, and even the spokespersons for him and his show (who, after all, get paid to talk), all declined to talk about the case. Left to our own devices, Gang Land unearthed some secret FBI documents that shed a little light on how the gang got onto Teutul’s case, and how the caper went down.

According to a December 13, 2007 FBI report, it was the brainchild of Michael Visconti, a close friend and wannabe wiseguy who had worked out and rode motorcycles with Teutul in New York and Florida during the late 1990s.

In 2003, after learning from another biking buddy that Teutul stored a “large amount of cash” at the house where he was living with his girlfriend at the time, Visconti and his mob
buddies decided to rip him off once they found out “where the cash was hidden,” according to the report.

The report states that Visconti, Melicharek (right) and other crew members “were aware of Teutul’s celebrity status” as the star of a family-run custom motorcycle building show, and decided to break in while Teutul and his girlfriend were away at a motorcycle show.

Visconti provided guns and registered at an Atlantic City casino the day of the caper so he would have a ready alibi in case his prior connections with Tuetul made him a suspect.

When the plan went awry, and the stranded robbery team called Visconti for help, he reached out for Pipolo, who rescued the empty handed crew and picked up and returned the guns that were never used in the mistake-filled robbery.

Visconti, who double crossed his old friend Teutul in 2003, followed suit last year and turned on his hoodlum friends after he was nabbed for a New Jersey home invasion. Today, he waits in the wings to take the stand for his latest group of friends, Team America, if the plea deal for Melicharek, the last man standing in the case, unexpectedly falls apart.
