AMD ships triple core Phenom X3
AMD on Thursday released seven new Phenom processors, aiming to hit the mainstream PC market with low-cost, performance-minded processors that include the first shipments of AMD’s triple-core Phenoms. Four of the chips are the new 50-series CPUs (also known as the “B3 stepping”) that fix the TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) erratum that plagued the first batch of Phenom processors out of the gate. The TLB erratum necessitated a fix on the affected system’s motherboard BIOS (turning the TLB “off”) resulting in some reduced performance. The new 50-series processors have similar model numbers and have the same speed clock-for-clock: i.e. the Phenom 9500 and 9550 are both 2.2-GHz quad-core processors.
The new processors are the Phenom X4 9550 2.2 GHz ($195 per unit in 1,000 unit lots), the Phenom X4 9750 2.4 GHz ($215), and the unlocked Phenom X4 9850 “Black Edition” 2.5 GHz ($235, unlocked and overclockable). In addition, AMD added a low-power Phenom, the X4 9100e 1.8-GHz, which runs at 65 watts in active mode. Pricing was not available. It will allow OEMs to design smaller, sleeker PCs, AMD executives said. AMD’s other Phenom processors run either at 95 or 125 watts. AMD also began shipping what it calls the Phenom “X3″ processor, the triple-core processor AMD announced in September. The X-rating has been applied to multi-core processors, so dual-core processors are the Athlon X2’s, triple cores are Phenom X3’s, and quad cores are Phenom X4’s. Two Phenom X3s will be available: the 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHz) processors. At press time, AMD had not made the pricing of either chip available.

Phenom-inal…….
im funny arnt i?
amd FTW!
Dual core, triple core, quad core - sheesh - you used to be able to get by with just ONE for a decade LOL
@1: lol
Too little too late. Good for fanboys though.
Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition sounds pretty good if it really has potential for overclocking. I have and Athlon64 5000+ that went from 2.6GHz to 3.1 easily but 6400+s weren’t so good as there is little more Athlons64 could do. And Intel processors overclock like crazy without special editions.
so if im getting this rite, overlock your processor and get back the 20$ you could have spent on a better computer….and cause a fire risk.
Awsome!
Intel FTW
9550? is that faster than my 4200+?
i can’t understand anything about this
@9
if it is 4200+ YES single core vs quad core
if it is X24200+ YES dual core vs quad core
either way, it’s faster.
too many variants, too confusing. tsk!
looks nice
tho i just got a new one, half a year ago
Been out of the loop for a while and havn’t built in PC for 7 years… am I correct in thinking the majority of software detects how many processors you have and spreads the load amongst them ?
I am looking to do another build in a few months and want to know, apart from lower power consumption, does a quad core 2.2ghz CPU offer any advantage over a single 2.2ghz CPU ?
it would be funny if amd actually make more sales from the 3 legged donkey (x3) than the x4.
oh yea baby i m getin best triple core ther is a la black edition grr baby yea

@ 16 u dame idiot x360 runs on triple core
A nice little trick from AMD to regain their status at the economical cpu space which was their bread and butter before the rise of the Athlon64 and the Core2Duo E21xx series onslaught from Intel, why waste a faulty core quad?, name it X3 and aggresively price it for the low end market. We will see how much aggresive they will be and they have to because they had lost even the low budget dualcore category price/perfomance wise to the much better E21xx series from Intel,a price category that a majority of people around the globe purchase cpus and an absolute essential and historic segment for AMD concerning their status and current crisis. I wish them good luck and i believe that they have more cards hidden at their sleeves.
@14
“does a quad core 2.2ghz CPU offer any advantage over a single 2.2ghz CPU ?”
It can process 4 times the data in the same amount of time
Phenomenal
Very good.
AMD is the BEST =P
Wow, so they’re finally selling that production run of faulty quad cores from last summer…WOW!! You rock AMD…NOT!! What a pathetic ruse from AMD, they are truly on their last legs as a processor maker, deal with ATI or not. Don’t be fooled by these triple cores, they’re faulty quads that will probably have more core failures.
Be glad Intel fanboys… otherwise you would work to death to buy a new Intel based PC!
I’m wishing AMD good luck this year… may IBM and its other partners stand by their side it did before, cause monopolizing the market as Intel and nVidia do to would hurt us, the buyers!
What socket are these Phenoms running on? Haven’t upgraded my pc in a loooooong time
And I also don’t own a last generation console, not even a previous one
Living in a 2-nd world(/developing?) country… Heh.
AMD CEST DE LA CRISS DE MARDE THATS IT , SI VOUS ETES PAS CAPABLE DE VOUS ACHETER DU INTEL , ACHETER VOUS DONT PAS DORDI ESTI DGANG DE BS!!!
@22 Yeah one core failure hence the three cores. Its not a bad idea, Intel recycle the damaged quads they make even if two or three cores are still working normally they still get binned. Selling them is a pretty good idea they are independant and the faults random so the chances of the other cores having a fault as well is no more than a chip with 4 working cores. By selling them at a lower price you are saving money as a manufacturer and as a consumer and preserving the environment a little so I dont see that as a ruse they don’t hide that they are essentially B-grades and they are accordingly priced.
@14 In your dreams, if all software was that smart……. but it ain’t unfortunately.
I have a dual core thingy and looking at CPU usage, one CPU is almost always 100% in use and sometimes (when starting programs) or using programs that have been developed for more than one CPU core it is using number 2. Oh, and the OS needs to support it too……..
AMD business store were giving a free Phenom quad core when you buy any mobo. I picked up an Asus M3A mobo + Phenom 9600 for 60 GB Pounds. Not bad!
Does anyone know of a guide to overclocking an AMD AThlon 5000+ without aftermarket cooling? Just want to tweak.
Or an nVidia 8600 GT? OR Ram?
Intel scoffs at AMD’s attempt to recoup its huge losses in trying to manufacture 4 core processors by selling the ones with three acceptably working cores.
“Hey, you want this awesome three core processor? Straight from our garbage bin!”
Yeah right! Intel FTW! AMD is for donkeys and slothbears!
thanks to AMD for bringing the competition to In-hell(intel)..LOL
amd still playing catch up with intel, intel is by far winning the cpu and nvidia is owning ati/amd in gpu race as well…amd really needs to step up again and bring out something good…so we can have price wars!!?!?!
I´m crying, here in Argentina the X2 4200+ cost u$s 90, X2 5000+ u$s 160, and the minimal law month salary is u$s 380. We are slave and here is the garbage bin of the world.
how are you slaves you get paid and there are other countries that suck more than yours be happy you get paid and have computers!
@33
Well, AMD still fights (and wins) in lower segments of the market and until recently it was still viable in the middle. As for graphics cards HD3xxx are pretty good value for the money and HD3870 is quite a bang for a buck. I still prefer Nvidia because of the Linux drivers
High-end stuff is mostly prestige related as most of people buy regular stuff. AMD seems to be gearing towards really new aproach to CPU/GPU solutions but it still seems like a distant future and for now it will have to take the beating from Intel.
I wonder if the people dissing AMD can afford those Intel processors that are really worth it - given that we are on a site that kinda promotes copyright infrigement and implies that we are all cheap bastards
I have been an amd fanboy for years. I have to admit that intel is kicking their arss right now!
J.
AMD go kill your self you have nothing good to offer the computer world.. I want GM to sell me a Vette thats missing a wheel so they can call it the C6 trike and give me a discount!
AMD ROCKS !!

i just build my own processor…its a super octacore with 11GHz clock speed. Basically, it means that it will blow your head off if you’re not careful.
With Intel begging to move onto the no FSB side, AMDs gonna have even more catching up to do.
@42
What do you mean more catching up?
AMD has been without a FSB for quite some time.
@43
Yes I know that. What i mean is that now Intel will give them even more competition to combat.
to RXP

Any further details in regard to yuor comments. A link or website would be good
thanks
@16 idiot of the century…
Guys, honestly, without AMD, we would all still be paying for some NETBURST crap.
Yay, Intel beats AMD in the top market for CPUs(They have been switching places for years!!). But let me ask a question…If you work all summer and use that money to buy an Intel Quad Core@3ghz for $1,000 Are you really “1337″ or just a tool. Schmucks.
#33 it’s not funny at all, that’s serious business your’re talking about; lets hope we in western nations won’t go down as much as Argentina did, right now the subprime mess and oil prices look bad enough.
