AMD moves to 12-core server processors

Advanced Micro Devices plans to release processors with 12 cores, which changes its product road map and kills earlier plans to release 8-core chips. The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, will be targeted at servers and is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to the company’s updated road map announced Wednesday. The chip will include 12M bytes of L3 cache and support DDR3 RAM, according to the road map. AMD is jumping from a 6-core chip code-named Istanbul, due for release in the second half of 2009, straight to a 12-core chip the following year, an AMD spokesman said. Until last month, AMD officials repeated plans to ship the 8-core server chip, code-named Barcelona, in 2009.

Montreal has now been replaced by Istanbul, followed by a 12-core product in 2010, the spokesman said. AMD is also planning to release a 6-core chip code-named Sao Paulo in 2010. The chip will include 6M bytes of L3 cache and support for DDR3 RAM. Sao Paulo chips could meet the need of systems that don’t require 12 cores, Allen said. The new chips will be more power efficient as they will be manufactured using the 45-nanometer process, an upgrade from the 65-nm process currently used to manufacture Barcelona. Even with AMD’s altered road map, Intel will remain formidable. Intel shipped 78.5 percent of chips in the first quarter of 2008, while AMD held a 20.6 percent market share, a slight gain from the 18.7 percent market share it held in the first quarter of 2007.

It’s good to see AMD clawing back some market share, hope those CPUs don’t suck like the Phenom.

It’s sad really, I bet the 4 core Intel processors will be better than whatever AMD dishes out.

12 cores or not, they need to improve their stuff a lot if they wanna sell some. Their phenoms just don’t deliver (and don’t even mention the triple core sh!t). They’re more of a phenomenal failure than anything. Epic Fail.

And what good is 12 cores, if an older 8 core xeon outperforms it, for less $?

Nevermind by 2010, Intel will have their new Keifer chips out, with 32 cores (and Westmere too). Nehalem is due sometime soon too, which means a full NUMA implementation, 32nm process, CPUs with *24MB* of cache, quad channel RAM, on their new QuickPath bus (replacement for FSB, much like HyperTransport), and serious advances in SIMD instructions (AVX: Advanced Vector Extensions) which by itself will double floating point performance!

    R.I.P. AMD

I am not sure about quads but if you take to similar priced amd and intel then you’ll see they mostly perform the same or atleast par also AMD has cheaper motherboards which offer the best bang for the buck…

@20: the only AMD processor at 40$ right now is the Sempron LE-1150. That’s not even worth upgrading to, unless you’re using like a pentium 3. Enjoy the slow rig. BTW, Intel does have very similar CPUs pretty much at the same price point (e.g. Celeron 430 Conroe-L) Just too bad that for like 20$ more you can have a CPU that TOTALLY slaughters it (might actually be worth upgrading to!)

@21: No. Not everyone is. We *NEED* AMD around. Intel definitely needs competition. But if they wanna still be around in a while, they have to deliver better CPUs *NOW*!

@22: not really. You can have very nice motherboards around 100$ on both platforms (cheaper ones, if you don’t need anything “nice”). The price gap pretty much vanished in the last few months.

Well I run linux, so I can’t play any games and I barely use all the juice out of my AMD 4400+, it’s an overall better lower-end processor IMO.

Of course if you are going to pay $800 for a processor might as well go intel….

Does everyone agree that AMD isn’t trying hard enough to get back the market share they lost to Intel once the Core2 came out?

I decided to go AMD for my latest discount game rig. It basically came down to what I could find on the discount rack, but I am very happy with my AMD X2 5000+ black edition (the black means the multipliers and everything are unlocked for overclocking). The headroom for overclocking is amazing. A very fun chip to play with for US$75. Plus an Asus M2N-E mobo for about the same price. With DDR2 being so cheap, I got 2gb. All 3 main pieces of the puzzle for under $200, which is what I was looking at for the Intel chip alone. You can’t argue that Intel is making some good CPUs though. If I got everything free, I’d certainly go with Intel. For some reason I still like working with the AMDs. Maybe just wishful thinking.

Oh yeah, 12 cores is getting sort of silly. The jump to dual core was the biggest thing in PCs for a long while, but 12? That’s getting goofy.

Intel may have faster cpu’s and NVidia faster gfx-cards, but I’m still very happy with my socket 939 AMD 4200+ X2 cpu and new Peak Radeon 3850HD 1GB gfx-card. When I bought the cpu a few years ago, Intel did not even have a dual-core and the recently bought Radeon 3850 was incredibly good value for the money. It costs about half of a 8800GT and I can play all games (e.g. Oblivion, COD4, etc) at max gfx settings. You’ll not hear me complain.

People who want the fastest will pay a hefty premium and most of the time a well chosen mid-range system is more than sufficient.

I sure hope that AMD will stay in business to give Intel and NVidia some competition. AMD also has some great chipsets (690, 790) and some very nice 45W TDP cpu’s for your HTPC’s

@31: much the inverse for me. AMD was too expensive :p

e2160 + gigabyte motherboard and 2GB PC6400 CL4 ram was 200$. And that 70$ CPU (OC’ed nicely) beat the 300$ Athlon64 X2 6400+ which was AMD’s top offering at the time, on every single benchmark…

    May 10th, 2008 | 03:32

what the hell you going to do with 12 cores? AMD needs to step up for real and not like this.

  37. DK
    May 10th, 2008 | 04:12

Well the more cores become more common then the less cores will become cheaper. Once 8, cores, 12 cores, 24 cores or whatever becomes the norm then dual, triple and quad core chips will become even cheaper.

    May 10th, 2008 | 06:02

It sounds great but tell me what software can actually use 12 cores? I don’t know many that even use 4 let alone 12. I’m far from an expert and don’t know much about server software (or hardware for that matter), so if someone can explain it a little better it would be appreciated.

This is a stupid gimmick, I bet after a while the apple cores will go rotten and start to smell. AMD you are soooo dumb!!!

  40. berkut
    May 10th, 2008 | 10:12

@38, 12 cores is for server market and in two years from now at that. Anyway, servers have plenty of use for that many cores and it’s being that way for over 10+ years. You should see what database servers are like this days and I won’t even go into specialized servers or super clusters.

Just to let you know, I have a database on two clustered Dual Quad (8 cores) Zeon machines. It’s nothing special like some companies have, but meets my needs.

  41. lulz
    May 11th, 2008 | 02:45

@38: LOTS of uses… Encoding audio/video, rendering, virtual machines, any server of any kind (web, database, app server, etc). Perhaps games don’t make use of it, but there’s more to computers than gaming or watching youtube vids lol.

@40: LOL. Zeon eh? You’d think someone who’s into stuff like that could at least spell Xeon.
