Alienware introduces M17 gaming notebook

Alienware’s new M17 features a Core 2 Extreme processor, ATI CrossFireX graphics, dual hard drives…and prices starting at $1,399. Dell subsidiary Alienware has announced its new M17 gaming notebook, marking the first time an Alienware notebook has offered ATI CrossFireX technology, offering dual ATI mobility Radeon HD 3870 graphics controllers to push those pixels around. The system also sports a Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Core 2 Extreme QX93000 processors, DDR memory, and a 17-inch 1,920 by 1,200 pixel display. The M17 is available in a wide range configurations to satisfy gamer cravings, but the highlights are either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme quad-core processors, up to 4 GB of DDR3 memory, single and dual-graphics options using ATi Mobility Radeon HD 3870 controllers, single and dual hard drive options, ATSC TV in with an optional TV tuner, HDMI and VGA video output.

There’s also support for 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth wireless networking, gigabit Ethernet, and a 17-inch display sporting either a 1,920 by 1,200-pixel resolution, or 1,440 by 900 pixels. The M17 features Alienware’s stealth black matte finish, along with Alienware’s Skullcap case design. The unit is available with a dual layer DVD burner (with or without LightScribe), or a burner that can also read Blu-ray media. Prices for the M17 start at $1,399, although, of course, prices go up as you add components. Still, a Core 2 Extreme config with 3 GB of RAM, CrossFireX, and that 1,920 by 1,200-pixel screen is (barely) under $2,000.

Looks nice but still, gaming is always better on a desktop. I doubt many gamers are busy traveling all the time and need a laptop and need a laptop to keep up.

you may as well just buy a pc .. it’s practically just as portable.

i doubt you could carry that thing around without a car!

I like the design, its a heavy notebook but very powerfull. If you want beauty check voodoo pc. Not good for portability though, still better and more practical than a desktop.

The design looks the same one used for the tunero ferraris, very industrial.

why is this article run? its interesting but what is this a pc tech review site?

i used to be a laptop gamer buts its too expensive to keep up with. And if you actually want a portable gaming laptop youre going to need to make sacrifices mostly in the 3d power, battery life and weight. Ive come to the personal conclusion its much better to have a killer pc rig and a laptop for normal non gaming use.

remember the Dell 9100 Series/ XPS Gen1? that was a gaming laptop BEAST that was barely portable but still has one of the best LCD’s ever. It was a 15.4″ 1920×1200 Lcd, it looked amazing.

The laptop used a desktop Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz! with a 9800GT Go. The thing was huge, and had little feet to prop it up to help airflow, which means you need to have it on a hard surface otherwise the air ports would be blocked and it would quickly (under intense gaming apps) burn out and turn off.

this laptop is way too powerful for the size, I mean, with such components in such a small case, you almost need a watercooling system to make sure it doesnt burn out… what a piece of junk… gosh! companies are ready to do anything to sell a laptop these days… what a shame!

I own an XPS Gen 2 purchased it back in august 2005 (payed for by my school via bursary). Everyone says it is so heavy, I work out and used to unload trucks when I was in high school and I still find myself walking with a slight hunch when walking with it and books in my backpack. They are nice notebooks but not really fun to lug around for long periods. I bought a Toshiba Qosmio x300 last week, they are bigger and thicker but a bit lighter then the 17″ dell Xps/alienwares, but returned it cause I really didn’t need it. I built 3 desktops in the last 18 Months for various tasks, so I won’t buy a new notebook for at least another year. Unless you really need a new notebook, I would hold off till windows 7 or Snow Leopard is released.

Gaming you say. Well, laptops without power are as good as running without legs.
Basically, I really doubt you can play for more than an hour. Then you take power from somewhere else which is quite much the same as a desktop PC. Still, great job.
Personally I’d understand the idea of laptops with Quadro card. So, if necessary you can show some simulation and even re-simulate some part of it.
Creating this kind of laptops teaches how to save power, get most out of energy and so on. So, it’s quite much successful experimental science what changes all the time and few of wonderful changes and information is put together and being shared with us.

I think this is in the portable pc class – handy if you move about lots like travelling back and forth between countries. I’ve used the inspiron 9400 for a couple of years now exactly for this purpose and there hasn’t been anything it could’t handle, but could do with a graphics upgrade. Hence this alienware laptop is the dog’s bollox and the price for the top end model hasn’t budged from what I paid for the top end 9400 in Jan 87, and you get the HDMI which is handy for hooking movies and games up to the 42″ LCD. Battery life is a misnomer IMHO for this type of laptop. And if you still prefer to travel but can’t get over your love affair with the tower, then you’re gonna look a bit like a primitive lumberjack walking through immigration.

I would look into it… i needed a laptop for an overseas deployment(can’t really bring a desktop to Iraq), but i got the Acer Aspire 8920… which plays crysis and bioshock and dead space and COD5 and fallout 3… So i’ll pass on this for now.

I just got my M17 today and I was pretty UPSET about the whole Laptop. I upgraded it and spent over $3800 on the unit and it ran Call of Duty 5 like crap. I had to turn Anti Aliason off, textures to medium and lower the resolution. It still feels like I'm getting about 14fps. Also the keyboard lights don't work. I'm sending it back tomorrow and getting a refund.
