I am a fan of British comedy, I will say that it isn’t for everyone. You will certainly miss out on some fantastic movies with blanket statements like it all sucks. Some of it does ’suck’ and some Americans do ’suck’ but … cant we all just get along?

“british comedy sucks. just look at shows like The Office. the brits tried to copy that show but ended up sucking. the brits suck. americans rulez!”

HAHAHA are you having a laugh. The Office was originally a UK program, writen by Ricky Gervais. You americans stole it off us.

    Get you facts right

    lol @ 10

im canadian, and while i much prefer the US office over the british version, #10 tucker the US version is a copied but north-americanized version of the ORIGINAL british one.
facts make the world go-round !_!

    @10 Tucker

I think you may just be stiring, but for the sake of clarity the office was a pommy show, created by Ricky Gervais & Steve Merchant (personally I love it but that’s a matter for taste).

The first season of the US version frankly sucked ass … it basically tried to copy the characters & adapt the same script for US audience … not a good move.

The US show didn’t picked up until Ricky Gervais (& perhaps Steve Merchant – not sure) came over to help out. I love the US version now, one of the best out of the US networks. Its a shame the WGA strike has put an end to it for now (I believe 100+ production staff sacked).

Anyhow, you have to admit that in general the pom’s do subtle & sophisticated humour much more eloquently than their US counterparts. Which country’s shows you like better is probably just a reflection on how you like your comedy served up. My vote’s with the poms if you made me chose.

    November 20th, 2007 | 12:46

Are you having a laugh? is tucker having a laugh?

It just shows how stupid you are, jesus, just look at when they were made, Brit Office = 2001, U.S office = 2005

Like everything that the US copy or create, they drag it out for too many series. keep it short and sweet. don’t kill it off like friends or fraiser….and soon to be the US office

Brit comedy is indeed the balls, but this guy is terrible tbh.

He annoyed me with his in-your-face campness on the Friday Night Project and it’s no different on his stand-up from what I’ve seen (Just for laughs, Just for Paramount).

I prefer comedians to actually be funny, rather than rely on one stereotype as their saving grace, be it sexuality, race or religion.

That said, my favourite comedians all come from Canada, you guys rock!

I’m not sure if you Yanks have had Extras broadcast over there, but if you haven’t, and you like the The Office (UK) then you should defo check it out.

It’s done by Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant (the same as The Office) and of course it’s got Ricky (and Steve actually) starring in it. There are some classic lines in that show, and some proper famous actors/actresses as well.

And there’s gonna be a Christmas Special this year to finish things off.

    :)

Hey, howabout another one of you British yam-yams explain one more time the wonderfully interesting origin story of The Office.

The rest of you can marvel in amazement how we poor Americans just can’t get the wonderful sarcasm that tucker himself displayed in his comment.

What’s the word, tosser? Yeah, you’re all tossers.

In a few short sentences please enlighten me as to how American comedy is vastly superior to British?

American comedy; the oxymoron of oxymorons.

Everybody Loves raymond says all you need to know about american comedy: laugh track, wise cracking kids, grumpy and cynical old people, ridiculous sterotyping….and america loved it. and don’t even get be started on frasier, friends and all that tripe…

Ah, Extras … that was pure gold from the Gervais/Merchant team … an understated humour that would pass right by the under-developed funny bone of many.

HAHAHa @15 – nice ref to Extras

I personally didn’t find this particularly funny, mistook it for Jimmy Carr :(

For some reason we Brits tend to have a lot of effeminate comedians broadcast on UK TV.

I agree with Bullett how low do we have to go to based jokes on ‘double-entres’ ? It’s school boy material.

As for British comedy, we can as far back as the Monty Python team and even earlier with slapstick comedies from Norman Wisdom, the Carry On team etc.

Someone who was great funny to watch was Frank Skinner before he ‘made’ it on UK TV. His stand up acts (if you can grab them on DVD .. more likely VHS) were great live.

BTW ‘The Office’ is a UK show

    Dear The UK,

Thanks for Oasis. That’ll do, Britain. That’ll do.

Canned laughter? Stereotypes? Sounds like you’ve got the formula for Little Britain there, doesn’t it?

    Respectfully,

    @ essequemodeia

I’m a Brit and did not understand the term ‘ yam-yams ‘ in the context of your statement.

A ‘yam-yams’ is usually a non-English speaking person who does not speak English ie American.

Alternatively it’s a term to describe those from Bristol and the surrounding area.

    Your an American :)

^^ to the above…yeh and forget led zeppelin, black sabbath, the stone roses, rolling stones, joy division, the specials and a host of other bands that influenced music more than any limp bisdiq band america ever came up with.

America 0 : 1 Rest Of the World

  24. essequemodeia
    November 20th, 2007 | 13:47

What, you don’t like Limp Bizkit? Because every single person in America does. We just can’t get enough of them. Yep, best thing since sliced bread. We’re all getting together to sew pictures of Fred Durst onto all existing American flags.

Someone go slap Keith Richards and ask him who taught him those cool blues licks. I like the Stone Roses so much it’ll be just great watching them slap together a reunion tour when the creditors soon come calling. Led Zep’s great. I uhhh… yeah, they’re great.

Funny thing is I like British comedy. Coupling is the best relationship comedy in existence. Fawlty Towers is absolutely brilliant.

But since America is the eventual goal of any successful British enterprise, just ask old Ricky Gervais where he’s developing most of his forthcoming body of work.

  25. SaYonaRa
    November 20th, 2007 | 13:51

yeh those blues licks that noone wanted to listen to in america, so they had to come to britain to get big.

  26. essequemodeia
    November 20th, 2007 | 13:53

    @28

You mean those blues licks that formed the fertile soil from which all rock and roll would grow? You no smart good.

    November 20th, 2007 | 14:15

‘But since America is the eventual goal of any successful British enterprise’

Yes, we go to America just like everyone else – ‘To take all your hard earned dollars’ :)

Success can be viewed in many ways, critical acclaim and from your target audience can be found closer to home.

    November 20th, 2007 | 14:18

i cant stand the accents, and yes Americans understand sarcasm. ever wonder why Hollywood is in the US? Its because we do it better :)

  29. essequemodeia
    November 20th, 2007 | 14:19

Then it’s a shame one can’t heat one’s home with critical acclaim.

The differences between American and British cultures aren’t as dramatic as one might think… we all know the real villains are Australians.

Over the weekend I helped some American tourists here in London as they were lost and needed some directions to their hotel. Anyway I talked to them for awhile and they did mention to me that they did find the prices in the UK exceptionally high given the current exchange rate. (This is genuine and I think more people should be helpful to others)

Anyway you got me thinking about your comment

‘it’s a shame one can’t heat one’s home with critical acclaim’

Your right, maybe we should be using US dollars in our fires as they are not worth a lot……. hehe

Some exceptional people in civilisation were poor and died poor, this however does not distract from the fact that they are remembered and honoured today.

  32. November 20th, 2007 | 14:40

Theres alot of good british stuff and alot of good american stuff, lets just all get a long instead of cussing eachother ;D

The US and UK Office are not to be compared though, they are both funny in completely different ways…

Thanks for putting this one up Martin! Good to see some british stuff here.

    @ essequemodeia

Now as an aussie I have to take a stand here & say that yes – 99.99% of australian drama, comedy (hell anything on screen) is on par with a root canal in terms of entertainment value.

Calling us the real villains is fair cop – I’m surprised all trade agreements with Australia weren’t suspended after exporting the cringe factor of Hugh Jackman to the world. But hey we did give you Steve Irwin, such a comedic genius that he didn’t even realise it himself.

But seriously, American vs British comedy is a fragmented argument that you could take in 100 directions and cite a multitude of examples both for & against. Surely its a matter of taste and there is good and bad out of both camps. Thank that we have the luxury to chose the best from both.

Have some pity for us poor sods down under who must rely on the magic of Btorrent and draconian internet plans (20Gb / mths for an arm & 3 toes) to get any decent programming at all.

3 cheers for those who rip these shows & save us from reruns of neighbours, skippy & flipper on the holidays … (magnum PI is a real treat)
