Acer recalls 27000 notebook batteries from Sony

Damn, this battery thing is getting huge. Acer America said Wednesday it’s recalling 27,000 notebook batteries with cells made by Sony. An Acer America spokesman said the company, which has been gaining significant market share over the past 18 months, has received no reports of incidents and found no technical issues after months of testing and investigation. The decision to recall the units was made out of an abundance of caution, he said. sold the units in question in the United States and Canada between May 2004 and November 2006. The affected units include several different models of Acer TravelMate and Acer Aspire laptops. The notebooks sold for between $500 and $1,500, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Information on the specific notebook models and batteries being recalled can be found at this website. Last year, Dell, Apple, Lenovo, Toshiba and other PC makers were forced to recall notebooks with batteries made by Sony after it came to light that a flaw in Sony’s manufacturing process could lead to short circuits, sparks or fire. Dell, which had the most highly publicized incidents of notebook battery issues, recalled more than 4.1 million notebook batteries. I’m happy my notebook doesn’t belong in these possibly affected models, as it’s an European model. If you own one of these models mentioned at the Acer’s website, it seems like a really good idea to swap the batter for a new one, or you could eventually end with your notebook looking like one on those pictures.

Damn, your notebook could end up like that one on the pictures by just having a faulty battery? That’s certainly something to be concerned about.

I could be wrong but I don’t recall having all this defective hardware back in day. I think these big companies are just rushing this stuff out to get a quick buck…quantity over quality…smh

Lol @ Sideshow Surfer, ALL companies put profit before everything else. If they don’t make heaps of money it’s kinda pointless.

So what was the flaw in their process. Because that’s the interesting question as a flaw in the manufacturing process could mean almost anything. No stupid replies like they installed a faulty battery. Anyone who knows please reply

What about my battery that only lasts 20 minutes and still has not been recalled? Or the fact that the power cord gave me an electric shock? I have sent my Acer out 3 times within a year, and am still stuck with it
