Acer moved to 2nd place in notebook sales

Extremely cheap price asnd wide range of models stay behind the recent growth of Acer, now 2nd biggest notebook seller on the world. Acer sold 3.4 million notebook PCs in the fourth quarter of 2006 compared to Dell’s 3.5 million units, putting Acer at a 14.3 percent market share, just behind Dell’s 14.9 percent. Acer computers, following a sales increase of 45.6 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, vaulted past Toshiba to become the third-place seller. This is the highest quarter-to-quarter growth rate of the top-five, notebook-PC OEMs, even beating market leader Hewlett-Packard’s growth rate of 32.8 percent. HP retained its first-place position of 21.4 percent of the global market for notebook PCs, with a 52 percent annual growth, the best of any notebook-PC vendor. In order, the top-five sales leaders of notebook PCs in Q4 of 2006 were HP, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, and Lenovo.

The report also indicated a longer-term trend of “the rise of the Asia/Pacific-based OEMs” for the PC market, according to iSuppli. Acer and Lenovo, both based in the region, grew in 2006 by 26 percent in combined desktop and notebook shipments over the previous year, a rate that is nearly three times the annual growth rate for the PC industry as a whole. Together, they now account for 12.5 percent of the worldwide market for combined PC shipments, up from 10.8 percent the preceding year. Overall, notebook PCs had a growth of just over 28 percent in 2006. The iSuppli report predicted another strong year in 2007, with sales up about 24 percent to about 98 million units. I’m happy to admit I supported Acer’s recent growth with 1 new notebook last year.

It’d be nice if you gave sources of information, Martin. I’d rather look at a chart than go through the text.

Acer – just wanted to let you know that you have the best maintenance manuals avail for download. They describe how to take apart the entire laptop piece-by-piece . And put it back together.

i found that Acer had the best value for what you get. Dell right now is involved in a class-action lawsuit (in Canada) due to their craptacular notebooks. Toshiba is on my list of companies i’ll never buy from again. HP had a little legal troubles there with the whole illegal spying activities and lying. personally, i avoid corrupt companies and those with a bad rep. only issue i have with the Acer laptops is all the crap software installed on it, but it seems like all are pretty much like that. but definitely the best value for what you get out there.

I have have had a couple of different laptops. My last two has been Acer. I have been very happy with them. Both hardware spec and the build quality was superb. The first one was the fastest 2.5 year ago. It was a Centrino 1.6 Ghz, 512Ram, 60GB, 15.4″ screen and the latest i have is based on C2D 2Ghz, 2GB Ram, 160GB HD and ATI X1600, 15.4″ . It has everything i need, webcam, dual layer DVD, u name it.
I know there low-end models never looked that good. But there mid-end and high-end models are very good. There is no doubt there.
All my friends at the university have laptops so i know some of the models (Dell, Asus, HP, Thoshiba, IBM, Sony) Many of them has nice specs but there is always something missing. U have to pay alot more to get the whole package from vendors like IBM, HP, Toshiba and Sony. Dells laptops are just too big. There design is not that good. They look so bulky/clumsy and that goes for IBM Thinkpads too. In my opinion Asus makes the best looking machines in all ranges. And there spec are topnotch. Just like Sony Vaios. Unfortunately their prices are also in the high range, especially Sonys, so i have not been able to get any of those machines. Instead i have settled with Acer which have the best compromise of design, specs and price :)

i just bought an acer aspire 5630 and love it, the features it has are comparable to laptops from other brands that cost hundreds more, and it’s great looking to boot :)

I’ve worked for Acer, Toshiba & HP over the years (still at HP) & my views have changed over time. Used to be that you’d ONLY buy Toshiba a few years back. Then Acer started making decent quality (think Ferrari series) & dell brought out the xps series & they were the laptops everyone wanted (even though they’re a bit expensive). These days HP are top-notch (as shown by the sales figures Martin provided). The new “entertainment pc’s” are excellent. I own a dv9000 series it kicks ass!

OMG acer sucks at least here the warranty process is crap, toshiba is much much better and the warranty i dont know because so few people have problem with them :) . Acer is cheap then u pay it on pacience and if ur lucky u get one good lol

Piece of crap laptops. Can’t tell you how many BSOD problems we’ve had with them fresh out of the box at best buy. I’d take an alienware laptop anyday over HP, Dell and Acer.

I’m surfing on my Acer laptop (an Aspire 5670) at the moment. I bought it in October last year, and since then they’ve upgraded this model to have an even larger hard drive, better graphics card etc etc… But at the time it was pretty much THE best laptop on the market in the UK for less than £1000.

    The specs?

    Core Duo T2300
    15.4 WXGA CrystalBrite (shiny) LCD
    ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 512Mb – a REAL (!!!) PCI-e graphics card, not integrated/shared graphics
    2Gb DDR2 RAM
    120Gb SATA HD
“DVD Super Multi double layer” (basically it’s a Matshita slot-loading drive that can read and write just about anything, but it’s a little picky with some brands of DVD media)
    802.11n Intel A/B/G WLAN
    Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
Integrated Realtek HD (hah, HD, hardly) soundcard (but I have an external audio interface anyway which I can crank louder. I didn’t buy this laptop for its soundcard!)

All this for £800 touch, and this was way back in October last year. It was the only PC out of scores I looked at which had 1) a proper, dedicated graphics card 2) a decent-sized hard drive 3) more than 1gb of RAM 4) a nicely-designed case! It gets hot, and the battery life is nothing special if you run it ragged like a desktop, but it’s an awesome machine and I’m still really pleased with it.

I’d buy another one. I’d definitely buy another Acer over those fugly XPS laptops, urgh.
