88,400 PS3s Sold in Japan in 48 Hours

The interest for PlayStation 3 is really serious: Supplies of the PlayStation 3 are all but gone after retailers blew through their inventory in under a week, Japanese gaming magazine Enterbrain reported. 88,400 units were sold over the weekend, nearly all of the 100,000 units initially available. It could be awhile before new consoles make it into the region as Sony prepares for a wider North American launch. There, the company hopes to have as many as 400,000 units available, which will likely sell almost as fast when the PS3 debuts November 17. Two models of the PS3 are available in Japan. The basic model retails for 49,980 yen ($425 USD), while a more advanced model sells for around 60,000 yen ($510 USD). Both are cheaper than the retail price of the console here in the states, expected to be $499 and $599 USD respectively.

About 62 percent of the consoles sold were the advanced model. No breakdown has been provided of the allotments of each type of console. In any case, the magazine said the launch weekend’s results showed promise for Sony. Best-selling games over the weekend included Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, which sold about 30,000 consoles each. Even though Sony is the top-selling game console marker worldwide, that has not stopped pundits from being skeptical. Many have pointed to the PS3’s high-price, noting that past consoles in its price range have not been successful. Nintendo Wii is still my black horse…

people upgrade yourselves into the PC world. all these consoles are total crap. Why wait for others to upgrade your console, while with PC you can do it every month or year.

grow up, and understand what your saying about, rather then fly with your teenage rage. :/ PC games will and always be better, maybe in the near future as technology develops, consoles will be changing up. (as we already see new consoles slowly becoming just as PCS…one of the biggest changes personally I seen is being able to play ‘online’…that is in fact a big step for consoles…)

you think ps3 is superior to PCs? maybe yours? :/
anyway, good luck upgrading that crap in the future, and hope they release ps4.

    @ Joshua

    well said.

lol, for the amount of money spent on the ps2, it is much more superior than a pc. For what parts you can buy with that money on a pc..

plus there are ppl that love console gaming much more than pc gaming… so yeah it’s just preference..

correct, its a preference. But it is better then a PC? I doubt it. That box is made purely for gaming, but its only now we see its being expanded beyond only games. I guess, I’ll throw you a bone and say, consoles are catching up to computers, but dont jump the gun by saying they are better. Oh and if you love console games, enjoy, love it and enjoy it.. :)

You also forget the crucial social aspect of consol gaming. There is no way ever that plaing Pro Evo online over the web will ever be as good as having your actual friends in the room!!

(Unless your a Warcraft type, but South Park says enough about that type)

consoles always fall behind the PC in terms of gaming. it’s been that way for a long time and with the release of DirectX 10 and the video cards to match, PC’s slam consoles in a hard way.

but the key is money. if you got the money for a dual (or quad core) CPU’s with GB of RAM and dual (or quad core) GPU’s, then you’ll easily crush consoles. i just happen to have that.

but consoles are cheaper based on the performance you get out of them. it’s the poor man’s gaming platform. a gaming platform for the masses who still have no clue what AA and AF are, but think their consoles are badass. it’s okay, i’ll go back to playing my crappy PC games with maxed out graphics at 1920×1200. you can keep your consoles, especially one’s as lame as the PS3.

PC’s with comparable spec’s to consoles are only much more expensive if you buy them retail. Sure, if you get a good computer from dell it’ll cost you $2000+. But if you build it yourself, the price will be very close to that of a console.
For people who like the controller, guess what, you can buy one for your PC. All of the newest console controllers have cheap adaptors that let you use them on your PC.

The ONLY good reason for buying consoles is that the best game developers make their games only for consoles, largely due to piracy issues. When people can download your game for free you’re not going to make nearly as much money.
While there are some very good PC games out there, the simple truth is that the selection doesn’t even come close to that of the console games. And the way game piracy is going, that’s not likely to change any time soon.
