80th Academy Award Nominations

Like every year, the Academy Award Nominations are announced in the end of January as the ceremony takes place in the end of February. This year the Academy Award ceremony will be on February the 24th. I will not bother with much introduction cause I know you all know what Oscars are all about.

More nominations can be found in the complete list of the IMDB website and in the official Oscars website. This year I don’t have the same exact feeling that I had last year. I think most of the movies from last year deserved their nominations where this years movies do not deserve their nomination at all. This might has to do with some movies that we haven’t seen yet, and maybe my taste in movies. Don’t you think that ‘Juno’ is a little bit over-rated? It’s the same thing with what happened last year with ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. I would to see your opinion and discuss a little bit about the nominations.

I knew Juno would score high, as Atonement and No Country For Old Men. 3 Great movies, who really deserve to win awards !!!

Thanks to rlslog.net , i had the privilege of seeing those movies already :)

  3. January 23rd, 2008 | 18:19

I have seen the 2 of the three above and I need to watch ‘Atonement’… I miss ‘American Gangster’ from the Oscars :’(

have to admit.. thought Michael Cera (evan from superbad) should’ve got some recognition…

    January 23rd, 2008 | 18:22

Well… i would like to agree, but this year seems like a fine time for the Coen brothers to get there due with “No Country for Old Men”. Just like Scorsese got it for “The Departed” last year. Its time that people start recognizing these guys have been making mostly exceptional movies for almost 25 years. Only reason i’ll be watching the awards this year!!

Personally I was entertained the most by Michael Clayton of all the movies I saw in 07.
So Im happy to see it get the recognition its getting.
Since its not really a big “Oscar movie” its gonna (rightfully i guess) get overshadowed bigtime.

Also wheres Zodiac? That was such a great movie and way way beter than say.. Atonement?

The only movie I havent seen of the best movie nominations is There Will Be Blood.. Really looking forward to that one. Is there any R5 releasedate on that?

“This year I don’t have the same exact feeling that I had last year. I think most of the movies from last year deserved their nominations where this years movies do not deserve their nomination at all”

The original poster of this comment obviously has no clue about good filmmaking… Sure, JUNO is far from being the best movie of the year, yet it’s still a pretty funny comedy…. But NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and THERE WILL BE BLOOD are 2 of the best movies to come out in the past 10 years…. If you don’t see that, then you are a blind ass.

    @11
Yeah, you’re right, JUNO should have giant HH size breasts on her dainty 5′2″ frame…. LINKSASAP, you’re a douchebag!

Juno is way overrated i know that comedy movies never win but Superbad was way funnier and was also a geniuly good movie with a good story. It was also original and quirky and didn’t seem as forced as Juno.

@ #24 i agree with you whole heartedly… “No Country” better win Best Picture of the Year. Thank god there is no “Departed” like last year that will win because of sympathy for the director and a loaded cast. I do need to check out “Juno”… just so i can be educated about the competition

  33. Me
    January 23rd, 2008 | 18:54

Juno: great movie, the last 10 mins make it a masterpiece because of the slow pace and have the girl show her inner self, the two playing guitar together, wonderful. wish more movies like this would come from the US.

Michael Clayton: ok movie, moderate interesting story, good actors though

Atonement: best camera work since last 5 years, there is a 5min shot without cuts with a steadycam walking through a beach scene with 10′000s of soldiers at sunset - masterpiece, just alone for that scene.

    Gone Baby Gone: no nomination?

No Country For Old Men: too violent, great movie, but why do US movies portray killing people in this manner? one can tell a great story & movie without to have a killer klling dozens of people, Coen Brothers!!!!!

The Simpsons Movie: best animation nomination?

Otherwise 2007 US didn’t deliver that interesting movies.

  34. john
    January 23rd, 2008 | 18:54

juno was ok. but not a oscar movie. compared to all the so called teen comedy….it’s a masterpiece.

in a normal world juno would keep the baby. the story it is just plain stupid. she/the parents have money, the guy/father is more than ok….why not keep the baby ???

  35. Imv
    January 23rd, 2008 | 18:54

Guess I’ll have to try Juno, I turned off Atonement as soon as I saw it what type of movie it was.

Lust, Caution is my favourite movie of 2007, perhaps even my all-time favourite.

    100% i agree with mike.
    Excellent movie for Coen Brothers!

And something else. I think Daniel Day-Lewis delivers HUGE performance in ‘Blood’. I believe it’s easily the best of this decade and one of the greatest ever!

    Cheers guys:)

I need to check out No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, since Hollywood cares so much about my opinion, but unfortunately I’m pretty narrow minded when it comes to films. I like what I like and comedy is my genre of choice.

    January 23rd, 2008 | 19:35

‘Juno’ does not deserve to be nominated in the Best Motion Picture category. I know everyone is creaming their pants over this movie, but there are so many problems with almost every aspect of the production. Now I don’t want to give the wrong impression, it was a decent movie, and I was able to get some enjoyment out of it. My problem is that this movie had it’s flaws and there were so many other films that deserved to be nominated.
The last few minutes of the movie are crap though. I want to slap the director in the face for that slow pull back/zoom out that lasted 3+ minutes. That just proves to me that this was directed for television and not for the theater.

I have yet to see ‘No Country for Old Men’, but I am a HUGE fan of the Coen brothers and I’m sure it is an amazing film.

‘There Will Be Blood’ blew me away. I have always been on the fence about Paul Thomas Anderson’s films, but this film is breathtaking.

‘Michael Clayton’ and ‘Atonement’ never piqued my interests, but recently I’ve heard good things about ‘Atonement’. I might check that out, but ‘Michael Clayton’ just isn’t my type of film.

Right now I’m vying for ‘There Will Be Blood’ to win, but I might change my mind after seeing ‘No Country for Old Men’. Though I think Daniel Day-Lewis should win in the Best Actor category, hands down. His performance is phenomenal.

    January 23rd, 2008 | 19:36

Uhm whoever said no country for old men was too violent, you need to stick to childrens movies. NCFOM was an allegory about the nature of violence in our times, and javiers’ character represented death and modern society. Hence his reliance on coin tosses (where chance exists there is no need for god) and that is why he was not persuaded by the morality or purposes of other characters.. he had his own set of morals/character. At the end tommy jones understood that he was helpless against death and the the thing he thought would save him from it (the light just up ahead) was all a dream. That is also why it did not roll up nice and tidy at the end, because life is not a movie and the gg doesnt always win. So in short im sorry if an allegory about violence and death is too violent for you, go watch ratatouille.

Havnying any appreciation for cinemetography, suspense, and leading the viewer while keeping it fresh adn original you have to love No Country For Old Men. I saw that one on the big screen and it gripped the aattention of everyone in the theater, especially the end. All the actors in their were great down to Woddy Harrelson and the Lady in the trailer park rental office. They def deserve to win some awards for that movie.

I have not sen Michael Clayton yet to be fair but No country For Old Men was everything I anticipated.

  55. DeerDance
    January 23rd, 2008 | 20:04

    Michael Clayton -
was such a boring movie… realy there were none twist in there or anything mildly interesting… the only good acting was by that women which have on screen time 8min… story was soooo week it hurt me inside just remembering it!!!

No land for Old man -
Interesting, nice movie but thats maybe only in comparison to other crap, dont think other then acting of the Javier Bardem deserve oscar, screen play especialy NO, direction yes maybe….

    Elizabeth: golden age -
Boring sooo Boring, that movie is sooo boring and the whole story can be told by 2 sentances…..

What i miss there is STARDUST i did not except anything interesting in that movie… but it realy like especialy Michelle Pfeiffer… ending was poor but i think at least some nomination should be there…

JUNO: thought some of the dialogue was awfully forced/contrived. and the juno character was such a smartarse, to the point of unbelievability. Wish they toned that down a bit - no teenager is that extreme.

@4, They didn’t do enough with the Paulie Bleeker character to warrant any nonination for Cera.

Hmmm… is this gonna be this year’s “Garden State”… good, quirky indie film elevated to God-like reverence for no apparent reason??

  59. hello
    January 23rd, 2008 | 20:26

I’m sorry, but I don’t see Juno winning anything.
Maybe a 5% chance Diablo Cody on the screenplay.

    @47

Foreign films needed. For me toss btwn Katyn and Die Fälscher.

Hope Marion Cotillard gets best actress for La Mome…incredible performance!

Think best actor bwtn DDLewis and JohnnyDepp (great operetta-but academy has probs with ‘art’ films and loves to typecast/safer!

Best pic: No Country For Old Men (about time Cohens got it) v There Will Be Blood (gosh…we luv our violence!)

    January 23rd, 2008 | 22:47

Juno … not a total crap, but close, i really don’t get what’s all the big fuss about, the storyline ? the acting ?, neither seemed good enough for an Oscar nomination in my opinion, of course i’m not a movie critic, but i do watch a lot of movies on regular basis, also, i think a lot of good movies that were made in 2007 were skipped in favor of others less worthy of attention… i do have to say… these nominations don’t really surprise me, it’s the Oscars usual trend.

    my 2 cents

  74. OrthodoxAthiest
    January 23rd, 2008 | 23:14

Since we’re all giving our $0.02 - some of the nominations I haven’t seen yet… too many movies to get around to seeing.

I was surprised American Gangster didn’t get any nods. Great movie I felt, and great performance by Denzel. Maybe deserved a nod but not a win compared to some who did get nominated (Daniel Day-Lewis odds-on favorite). Viggo Mortensen did a great job in Eastern Promises… but probably not enough for the statue.

Gone Baby Gone blew me away. Great job by both Afflecks. Enchanted was okay… I’m probably too old (30!) for its target audience.

No Country For Old Men - great film. Deserving of an Oscar… certainly Best Supporting Actor. Javier was chilling.

Ratatouille - fantastic. Dead certain for Oscar.

Transformers for visual effects. Wasn’t happy with the film - Bumble Bee ruined etc., but admittedly good effects. Would like to see Golden Compass if an R5/Screener appears in time. :|

On average, last year’s films were better, particularly The Departed. simply awesome.

As for poster Mike’s view of Juno (not yet seen) being over-rated like Little Miss Sunshine last year… I have to wag a big finger at that. LMS was EXQUISITE. Feel good factor, non-cliché, fantastic (x infinity) acting by all involved, especially Alan Arkin, Steve Carell and… wow… Abigail Breslin… I haven’t been that blown away by a child actor since Jodie Foster’s early films (and that includes that excellent Haley Joel Osment performance in Sixth Sense). LMS was simply stunning performance and worthy of ALL the Oscar nods it received (and won). Overrated… wtf!?!

  75. OrthodoxAthiest

We all have different tastes in movies, so I am not surprised at the comments about some of the movies and actors nominated. The Academy is the same as us, all with different opinions on which is the best. But the best part of the list is the amount of movies we have been able to watch free thanks to Releaselog and the scene. So my nomination for an Oscar is to the scene.

Juno absolutely deserves every award it gets; otherwise mainstream movies really deserve oscar nominations. Superficial awards for superficial movies!!!

    Thx a heap, coyote ugly!!!

    More “limited” movies!!!

Every mainstream movie in the near past deserves to be leeches and cammed!!! I wont pay f… “stars” to walk the red carpet, live in 100 Mio dollar houses and fly private jets.

More interesting with the Oscars are the foreign movies section, with Persepolis and others.

Remember Dumb and Dumber, here you go, Oscar Nominations!!!

Well the nominations are ok I guess good to see a movie like michael clayton get a lot of nominations. But on the other hand my favourite movie of the year gone baby gone definitely deserved more noms, and not to mention the total snubbing of zodiac I bet you if it was released in december the so called awards season it would have gotten its due, robert downey jr. atleast deserved a best supporting nod. Also nice to see laura linney get nominated great actor, and ellen page also in the leading role category is a good nomination, I just saw Juno yesterday and it was a very good and original feel good movie but as far as the movie of the year goes, I don’t think so I would much rather have gone baby gone there instead of juno or even ratatouille if I may say so.

Also Reitman didn’t warrant a best director nod for Juno, coz where the hell is the nom for TIM BURTON dsh!t the way the academy keeps ignoring him its just sick, Sweeney Todd is his best work yet. And I hope Johnny would win in the best actor category coz even though Daniel is great I have seen him play an evil bastard before( the butcher). Whereas johnny does something that is really unique bringing back the old silent movie horror actors in the modern time and not to mention taking the risk of singing for the first time and pulling it off.

And finally in the end I can’t finish without mentioned the most ignored and snubbed great actor by the academy Christian Bale, wtf is with the academy for not recognizing this guy for his loads of excellent movies and this years complete snubbing of Rescue Dawn is the final straw, I think this the academy has a personal vendetta against bale or something its uneffing believable.

I guess Javier Bardem’s role in Goya’s Ghosts was not good to have the movie on rlslog.

Well if you believe The Departed really deserved the Oscars last year, I can’t say I am suprised about what you think of this years nominations.

In your defense, 2006 was a very poor Hollywood year, so maybe The Departed really was the best out of the bad stuff that came out of Hollywood that year…
