$549 Asus Eee PC will hit stores on May 12

When ASUS launched the original Eee PC 701 4G in late 2007, the notebook was praised for its relatively low price, respectable performance for an inexpensive notebook due to its internal solid-state drive (SSD), and compact dimensions/weight. ASUS announced its second generation model in early March along with a few notable upgrades to its screen and storage capacity. Unfortunately, those upgrades come at a price that pushes the Eee PC 900 squarely into an even higher price bracket. When the Eee PC 900 launches on May 12 in the United States, it will be priced at $549 for both Linux and Windows XP versions.

The Linux version of the Eee PC will come with a 4GB SSD + an additional 16GB internal flash module for a total of 20GB of storage space. The Windows XP model — due to the licensing fees associated with Windows — will only feature an internal flash module of 8GB leaving it with just 12GB of total storage space. The other notable upgrades for the second generation Eee PC include the larger, 8.9″ 1024×600 display, 1GB of DDR2 memory, Multi-Touch trackpad, and the inclusion of a 1.3 MP webcam (up from 0.3 MP). Otherwise, the Eee PC still includes an undersized keyboard, three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, and an Intel Celeron-M processor which can run at 630 MHz or 900 MHz.

in the face of a looming walkout from the intel, due to price wars, it should not surprise anyone the steep difference in $$$ between the two generation. Basically, Intel told them crank up the price OR ELSE ;-)
Still, way to go Asus, 1st gen was with a too small screen for me, let’s see if 2nd gen. can still form in a hand-book factor and last 3 hrs on the battlefield.
And I really doubt anyone will buy the XP version. I just yesterday revamped a ver.1 for a non-techie lady, piece of cake ;-)

you can buy a second hand laptop with thrice the specs for less money.

“you can buy a second hand laptop with thrice the specs for less money.”

Yes, and it will huge, made of worse parts, heavier, and you will most likely be force fed a Windows license. No thanks.

why wouldn’t you want one? it boots in seconds, it’s tiny. I’d be embarrassed carrying a laptop around, but these could be hidden in a bag/large pocket. perfect for people who travel a lot but need a computer.

Saying that I think the 900 model is overpriced - it should be selling for the same as the 701, with £50 at least knocked off the 701 model.

this is indeed a great package for casual use, but sad to say it is too underpowered for my needs.

yeah, exactly, this is supposed to be a cheap and easy laptop for everywhere you go, and i would say ideal for people, who have it as a second computer. its no desktop replacement, like many other so called “laptops”, which hardly deserve that name, cause of the weight, the noise, the heat and battery consumption.
But i would wait till end of June, when they are gonna sell it with the new Intel Atom processor, that is better in terms of battery usage.

still, it’s extremely fugly, and whatever you want to do on a laptop that small, and I’m sure that can’t be too much unles you wanna say byebye to your eyes very soon, you can also do on a palm which doesn’t look half as nerdy for half the price!?

Also, @5: I doubt a Software Licence would be the hardest problem, given the nature of this site ;-)

Thirdly, next year it will be too underpowered to even run it’s os, if it’s a windows version that is :-)

And last, but definetely not least: loco no like linux :-S

you compare a palm to this? its like comparing a wii to a desktop pc when it comes to gaming. does palm have a “normal” keyboard, usb ports, such a big screen (yeah, when you compare it to a palm, its HUGE), a SSD (i assume tahts what pushes the cost so relative high), a webcam, usb ports etc. ? of course its cheaper, it would be a surprise if it wasnt…

    April 20th, 2008 | 12:15

you might as well go for the XP version and either use the license on another computer or sell it. i am sure there will be some linux images avaliable on the net some where or you could request one of a friend with the computer. it probably comes with a linux reinstall cd or whatever they use to reinstall it. or else you could be brave and install your own linux partition.

if they are the same price, go for the one worth more?

@miles: Since the Linux version comes with more storage, buying the XP version would be really stupid. If you want that you can just install it later yourself.

I want one but I have to agree with baddab, so I will wait until the atom cpu versions come out. One thing that annoys me is that they do not put in 2 gigs straight away as a buying option. This means you have to change the 512mb ram. I might buy the linux version for the extra 4 gb ssd and then install windows xp through a usb stick. And to all the people who say it is nothing more than a glorified calculator lets look at the pros of the system
1:- proper software that we are used to working with,
    2:- it is lightweight
    3:- it is fastbooting
4:- it as a relatively big screen,
    5:- Great for multimedia
    6:- Great for connectivity
7:- and compared to the other umpcs not too bad a price.
And if you want extra memory see what this german firm is doing http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/04/15/datacask_launches_jupiter/

I’m wondering whether the Atom processor Eees will be any faster or slower than the current Celerons. It’s supposed to add H.264 decoding, but it’s also in-order execution.

  20. Jimbo
    April 20th, 2008 | 13:20

Correction the new one comes with 1 gb not 512mb but 2 gb should be offered straight away.

Yes you can buy a new laptop with better specs (and with optical drives) but do to have carry it around in separate case/bag, with the asus you can transport it with your
other business/everyday stuff. That was the whole idea of laptops, portability.

    Hi,

does ne1 know when the ASUS XG STATION will be released, its the first ever external graphics card for laptops, and was shown fully functional at least 1 year ago???? Its now nearly half way through 2008 and it still isnt out????

    April 20th, 2008 | 14:25

Can’t speak for the quality of the product, but due to its price a local public school system bought one for all of its kids. This is the way to go with public education — laptops in the hands of the children. Sure, they look like crap, but it’s a fine first step.

My $599 HP 14″ laptop is doing the job. I can’t figure out the advantages of this unit over mine. I need all the USB ports and storage, etc. to be productive. Besides being light and cute, what would it do versus a traditional laptop? Dance?

What a waste of money! You can buy a full sized and fully functional laptop with a REAL LCD screen for $499. People that buy these Asus Eee things are real idiots IMO.

It’s a nice, small machine and I’d like to have one, but it is overpriced for what it is, essentially a stripped down, basic laptop. There’s nothing revolutionary or costly about the machine’s components so there’s no reason it should cost as much as a much more advanced standard-sized laptop. Sure it has 16GB of flash memory, however the costs for that are no longer that expensive. As I said I’d be interested in having one of these, however it should probably sell for at least $150 less when the technology of it is compared to other portable devices that use more expensive components.

Gee pay for ANOTHER version of windows with LESS space, or get the LInux version, larger space and install your XP LITE??

The new CPU, and the new battery in the pipeline means a extra couple of months to wait.

#37, the difference here is the weight, and better battery power, I agree the price has gone up more than I like but they also said that it will probably drop another $50 after the first month or two.

Personally I am looking at this as the ultimate Ebook reader, since compared to all the other ones out there this can read ANY format, and the screen can be turned 90*

The fact that it has multiple USB ports means you can hook up GPS (or if you want make it internal) and it has plenty of room for expandability (touch screen, blue tooth etc.)

I have a “regular” laptop but there is no way I can take it on the bus/train and read or surf on my lap (to darn heavy)
