..you do know that flv can contain various types of encoded content? I have some videos ripped from BBC iplayer (using Mediacatcher) that contain x264/AAC and look very nice when played in VLC or when demuxed and put in a mkv container with NO rencoding.

..so the answer is "YES" you can polish a turd, but only when it isnt a turd in the first place.
