Well being able to download a flie in flv player is all very fine and pleasant but a good you tube downloader / converter is what is needed.
To many formats are only playable on a pc with vlc media player being the best – but hey maybe I dont want 30 different file formats…maybe I want everything as an .avi including trailers – usually .movs – that way they can be saved and played back on any number of media players div x players etc – as long as the codecs are up to date – sure pc to tv output is nice too – this thing might be nice – I use atube catcher – no virus no trial period.
@11 True, but Youtube quality sucks goat ass anyway, so for me, I don’t take too many vids off of it especially if I can find a better quality one somewhere else.
Just download “Free download manager”, it’s FREE OPEN SOURCE and saves Youtube videos as well. It’s also spyware free and works great unlike “Flashget” which sends TCP requests to anti-P2P orgz.

4U Download is a piece of crap. On most systems it doesn’t work. Useless. Use freeware alternatives instead.

I just use http://www.savetube.com I haven’t had any problems with that site at all. Just enter the URL click ‘GO’ and download. Plays fine with VLC Player.
You dont need VLC to play those flv files,,,,, just rename them with .avi at the end.

i use mozilla mostly and got a cool add on from the website called video downloader 1.1.1. Its saves the url for any video on any page and either click download or delete the url. I was in Xtube city yesterday

Why not just use Orbit Downloader? That one is free and downloads movies not only from YouTube but also every other website that hides it videos/music inside flash players.
As no. 13 said, firefox and download helper. You can download any video from any website. Adblock plus and Filterset.g are other nice bonus’s so you don’t have to *Cough look at annoying ads.
So sad windows users need a “special” program for downloading stuff from the web. With Safari on the mac, you don´t need anything..:D
You can also just pull the YouTube video out of the browser’s cache. For Firefox, go to the page and play the video. When the shaded/colored bar is all the way across, go to the cache and sort the files by date. The video will be at or near the top and larger than the rest of the files. Copy & rename to .FLV. Note that this works on virtually all sites that buffer the video to your system. If they have a bar that fills up, even when paused, the video will be the cache.
Also, lately when I use KeepVid, I’ve been getting the option to download a “high quality” MP4 file. There’s no guarantee, but the quality is usually higher than the FLV version.
Maybe Safari can download files without any additional add ons or programs, but at least with Firefox I know that I can acces Paypal and the other sites that are beginning to block Safari because it has very poor general security and poor anti-phishing security. And video download helper on Firefox takes about 2 seconds to install, works perfectly and works on almost any site you care to mention.
Also, the tip above about checking the browsers cache also works, it’s just a little less convenient.
