4chan attacks MPAA’s website with DDoS

Members of the notorious 4chan image board have launched a coordinated a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against mpaa.org, the website of the Motion Picture Association of America. The attack began at 9:00 PM EST and is still ongoing. It only took eight minutes for the MPAA website to go down. According to an announcement posted on the Internet, 4chan members consider this a retaliation against film studios who paid an Indian company called Aiplex Software to attack torrent websites in a similar manner.Last week, Aiplex’s managing director boasted in the media that when websites refuse to respond to DMCA takedown notices sent by his company, on behalf of local and international film studios, his team resorts to DDoS.

[…] We flood the website with lakhs [hundred of thousands] of requests, which results in database error, causing denial of service as each server has a fixed bandwidth capacity,” he said.

Aiplex was the original target in 4chan’s attack plans, but it was replaced with MPAA at the last moment, because the Indian company’s website was hit and taken down ahead of schedule by someone else.

Rejoice, /b/rothers, even if it was at the hands of a single anon that it was done, even if ahead of schedule. Now we have our lasers primed, but what do we target now? We target the bastard group that has thus far led this charge against our websites, like The Pirate Bay. We target MPAA.ORG!” the 4chan announcement said.

Instructions regarding what programs to use in the attack, where to get them from and what IP address to target were also included. 4chan is a popular image board that served as birthplace for numerous Internet memes. Its members have repeatedly proven that they can band together to harass organizations or individuals in numerous ways.

    September 18th, 2010 | 11:54

@ 22 basically the mpaa are like trying to police the net with there anti piracy takedown notices. The law wasnt working for them so they hired a aiplex software group to illegally takedown by ddosing any website refuseing to takedown pirated material. In turn after weeks of ddosing torrents sites and maybe this 1 to they admited what they were upto. So in return we returned the favour only thousands have joined in and its kinda like a ddos war at the moment. Basically there screwded for the time being

    September 18th, 2010 | 11:56

I can’t see this ending well for 4chan.I bet they get into some kind of trouble. The authorities could care less if torrent sites are attacked, as they are illegal to some extent.Whereas the MPAA site is legal, and if contacted, the authorities would get involved.

Even though the MPAA were wrong for doing what they did, if it came down to it, they could/would say they were protecting their films against pirates, while 4chan would not have any credible reason for doing what they did.

  31. Kano
    September 18th, 2010 | 12:57

If you assume that the MPAA could not legally take down the sites they attacked (because they would if they could), you have to come to the conclusion that in the eyes of the law, those sites were legal. Or at the very least, out of legal reach of MPAA.

If the MPAA want to use dirty tactics, then they really should not underestimate the hundreds of thousands of dudes out there that are willing to fight back.

We can easily find the IPs of email servers, VPN endpoints and and other infrastructure stuff and bring the whole company’s IT to a grinding halt.

  39. Bob
    September 18th, 2010 | 15:06

The great thing about this is that they are only doing back to Aiplex/MPAA what was done to them.

That means that MPAA/Aiplex CANNOT attempt legal action against them for it. If they did retaliate via the courts, they are admitting that the actions they took were also illegal, and would totally destroy any defence they would otherwise have in court and effectively find themselves guilty.

And since Aiplex/MPAA targeted many more than just two websites, they would have a lot more coming back at them. They’ve basically f****d themselves over.

HEY HEY HEY! leave netflix out of this, they charge $5-10 and you get every penny worth out of it if you’re smart. its a source of a lot of pirated material too (people are ripping movies at a constant rate thanks to a cheap and in the mail rental service), not to mention the great streaming to TV and computer they have going.

if you’re going to DDoS anyone, do it to blockbuster’s snail mail or their drop box, blockbuster is to movies what itunes is to music.

I kinda wonder why they’d choose that site as the target, i mean its pretty much useless to them, theres nothing that makes them any money at all on the mpaa site. I wonder why they didn’t choose more useful sites, like the individual companies sites or branded stores, or something.

The MPAA’s tactics are ILLEGAL. They do NOT hold copyright to anything other than items they themselves have created. Only the copyright holders can file any action. But the MPAA hasnt learned. They must be punished.

I was fairly certain that most ISP’s will spot which kids are DDoS’ing and terminate their service for abuse (pretty sure I read that in the Terms for mine) Heck, most should already have in place some software to catch erratic behaviour like that… actually, I figured DDoS attacks had died out over a decade ago due to the aforementioned sw that should be catching all the kids.

    Just be careful
