4.7 Million copies of Fallout 3 shipped

Bethesda’s crowing this morning about record sales of its post-apocalyptic role-playing games Fallout 3. Probably justified. UK sales checker Chart-Track says Fallout 3 has already outsold every prior game in the franchise combined. That sounds slightly more illustrious than it is, because of course all those older Fallout games (except for what-was-Interplay-smoking spinoff Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel) were strictly computer-based. Console sales routinely trump PC sales nowadays, and of course there’s that thing about the market exploding since Fallout and Fallout 2 arrived in the late 1990s. But at least 90 percent illustrious, with Chart-Track stating the game has already outsold Bethesda’s Oblivion by 57%, pulling in sales of 55% on Xbox 360, 28% on PS3, and 17% on PC.

Bethesda dropped a note this morning stating it’s shipped approximately 4.7 million units of Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, “representing retail sales in excess of $300 million.” The game went on sale at midnight on October 28 in North America, as some 2,000 retailers held special late night launch parties. I’m not sure if that’s a record midnight opening for a video game, but if it’s not, it’s got to be close. Also: That’s 4.7 million units shipped to stores, not necessarily sold-through. We’ll see best-guesses at the sell-through numbers shortly from NPD. More info about Fallout 3 in our post.

Just how many were shipped for the PC specifically? Methinks not as many as the two consoles.

indeed just goes to show if ppl like the game they will buy it.As said in most game NFO files.Im sure that amount of sales pay the wages of those who help make them plus it will still be ongoing since it not been out too long.

“well that prooves that a good game has no problem with piracy” +1

When games are this good, I pirate to get it early, then pre-order from the cheapest online store with the cheapest delivery. Paying thru the arse for release day at retail is totally ridiculous - especially when you can buy it from the online store for £25, but it’s £35 instore (GAME, gamestation, HMV etc).

Pirate the game early, buy it cheap, and keep the PC market afloat!

seriously this game should’t have the name of fallout 3 - its not fallout. EOT

Well, duh. Of course it has no problems with piracy because 57% of the copies were for xbox360.

I thought it was too boring slow and complicated
would have been great back in the old ps1 days of resident evil and dino crisis - but things have moved on a bit since then .
Dead Space is much better - but less praised cos it didnt get as much promo hype

this game sux as “fallout”. its ok if not associated with “prequel” f2. skillcap, lvlcap, boring freeplay, bad ingame physics, only 4 endings. this thing doesn’t deserve fallout title. great sales perfectly illustrates how far games regressed since consoles took the leading from PC. it’ll be worst in near future :(

    games sux cuz of crashes

Agree.. It’s “Not Fallout for Casual Gamers” released only partial futures from fallout 2, and lost atmosphere fallout (humor random encounters, etc). It can be maked only original team. :(

And what of the graphics engine? No object shadows in 2008? Really? How ridiculous is that? Every single texture in the game (whooping 512×512 pixels) looks like somebody just took a dump on it. 200 years without mankind would turn the planet into flourishing paradise, not into one (not-so-)big garbage dump filled with unexplained rocks and out-of-place oversized killer animals. Absolutely talentless character animations. Absolutely childish writing. Amateurish voice acting. Not only it’s a horrible Fallout sequel, but it’s an ugly and overrated game by itself. Ones who have the audacity to call it a brilliant game, seem to be fanboys who really don’t know that much about the possibilities of modern gaming. Sorry, I try not to voice my opinion about other people’s choices, but this steaming pile of crap is just too big and too foul-smelling for me to ignore.

I’m not a fan of this type of games, but I have to say that this game is awesome…

    It’s a great game…
With lot of things to do, with a huge world to explore…

    Great game…
    :)

  18. HggH
    November 7th, 2008 | 19:55

But I agree with 13 in some of his points…

The textures could be better, the shadows, voice acting…
but making a game this big, with so much choices and such, is very very hard to do it perfectly… so don’t complain… it’s a great game…

Of course that the people that who have played or are playing CRYSIS or FARCRY2, they will notice a bg difference in the graphics…

    but still a great game…
    just my opinion.

    (sorry about my english)
    :)

it doesn’t matter by how much this game outsells the originals, they are still FAR better games and always will be.

I’m glad to see that there are people who look at the games not only for eye candy but for story, gameplay, atmosphere! These things are really important especially in an RPG!
Let me tell you about voice acting in Fallout 2, it was amazing! There were real actors: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183066/
Michael Dorn (Worf from Start Trek), Peter Jason, Ron Perlman etc. Now this is what I call atmosphere! :)
Its a good game but not even near Fallout 2! It a shame that some reviewers give it a 10! Its more likely 8.5-8.9!
Its a dumbed down version for console players!

BTW: Where are the 200+ endings that bethesda was talking? And yeah the ending really suck!

@18 just look at graphics at GTA4. thats what great game looks like with “huge open world”. designers done good work in many places, but gaming experience suck after 3-4 hours of exploring empty world, where nothing interesting is going on, its just boring. its like exploring space in Mass Effect, with stupid planets and rarely interesting side quests. but main story in ME is pretty epic, and what we have in F3? 3-4 hour long main story with 4 endings? thats a shame Interplay sold rights to Bethesda, best-looking-sh*t-makers-since-tes4. rip fallout.

also its obvious: most of 8+\10 reviews are “bought” by devs :\

I too agree with 13 & 15. The landscape could use a little more effort from the graphics team side. The plot was so simple and cliche’ that i had to eventually start skipping dialouges. Most of the missions were too “go-fetch-and-come-back” and had no meaning.
All in all the seemed to have a lot of potenial at first, but i got bored of it after 3 nights.

It’s clear that most of the haters haven’t actually played Fallout 1 & 2. Fallout 3 is a great game, and worthy of the name ‘Fallout 3′. And that’s coming from somebody who still plays Fallout 1 & 2! I actually bought the game, that’s the first game I bought in years! Love the lunchbox and bobblehead, and can’t wait for the expansion pack!

2 QuadrupelQ: actually i’m still have F2 installed, thou i didn’t played it for 3-4 months for sure. it’s hard to find anything new in it after that many years. it was phenomenal back at 1999, when i launched it first time T_T so much improvement after first Fallout. 3 second saves, 15 seconds load… it was fun to steal with 20 points in skill :) damn, nearly ten years now… “not-Fallout” 3 dont even have a capability of playing it through one more time.

You’d think with that kind of profits they could afford to hire more than 10 voice actors and actually add content into the game

i just finish dead space and it is a good game and i just began fallout 3 i never play a RPG game before and i have a great expectations on this one but the comments her came from a people how look like they know what they are say .
i hope i am not disappointing on fallout 3 specially with some reports that far cry 2 is disappointing too .

I came from Fallout: Tactics, not 1 & 2 of the series (I hate turn-based RPG’s), so Fallout 3 is a more natural progression of that game.
The only downside is the lack of ability to create a team with humans, ghouls and mutants. Also the lack of usable vehicles.

Fallout 3 is still fun stuff though - all you anal-retentive haters (both fallout 1/2 geeks and graphics biotches) should STFU. The game has faults, but is great fun if you get over your dour selves - why else would it sell so much? :?:

  29. hater
    November 8th, 2008 | 08:01

    > why else would it sell so much?
that’s obvious: because there is so many people like you (casuals), who never tasted epic games (especially kids born after 1990) and have no real knowledge about genre classics. prime minuses of not-Fallout 3 are: castrated RPG elements, boring freeplay, “natural progression of Fallout: Tactics” (it never was good RPG at all) and relation with Fallout title. not-Fallout 3 is one of today’s failures like FC2 and RA3… and obviously its not 8\10 or better, 7\10 at most.

agree with 13 n’ 15. this is not fallout, its just a hype for a name of a legend n’ every old skool gamer knows that, many aspects of this game could be done better a lot, blah bla bla

just like guys above - EOT ! post-apocaliptic ? maybe

quake 1 looks a lot better than this !

I’ve just played trough Fallout 3 at the lowest graphic settings due to my outdated computer, and I liked it A LOT. I don’t care about graphics as long as the game is fun to play, but I’ll have to agree to some of the posts here; it could have been much better. Game was way too short as I finished it in just two days. =(

I’ve been playing every side quest and exploring everything I can and delaying main quest lines.

I’m up to 24 hours INGAME time, and I’m not even at Rivet yet.

I think I will have a lot more game time ahead!!
