400GB optical disc invented by Pioneer
Got a big archiving project you’ve been itching to do? Pioneer’s latest development could help you keep all your data in one nice, little circular package. The Japanese electronics maker has been working on an optical disc, which, like Blu-ray, can store 25GB of data in a single layer. But Pioneer says it’s one-upped the high-definition format to the sixteenth degree. The company announced today that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.
Blu-ray comes in single layer (25GB) and dual-layer (50GB) flavors. Pioneer does say that because the lens specification for reading the discs is similar to Blu-ray, “it is possible to maintain compatibility” between its disc and Blu-ray discs. That’s not saying it will be compatible, but it would make sense since Pioneer is one of the original Blu-ray Disc Association members. However, plans for that archiving project will have to be put on pause if you want to use this technology. Pioneer is going to demonstrate it at an industry conference next week, but for now the disc is read-only. Eventually, they’ll add write capability as well.

Thats a lot of porn…
OHH.. All the things i could do with this baby..
Hole – ee – shi – iit.
GO PIONEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sony fails..
Seems kinda risky to put 400gb of data on such a fragile and indispensable disk…but like always nice to see technology move forward…
i couldn’t imagine how much 1 disk would cost??
thats crazy 1 disc is bigger than my hard drive
Many layerd discs are doomed to fail
Cool. Dats a lot of data. bet it burns sloooow
Scary. one bad scratch or dreaded laser rot, and OMFG for the emote. Hit to da pocketbook FTfail.
Side-thought: Imagine the games that will eventually install from those…….
Cool if it is compatible with Blu-ray burners then I can actually back up my stuff in the future as it is now I don’t trust external hard drives cause I’ve had 3 or 4 die around a year from purchase and still have hard drives that came with my dads computers ten years ago that still work..
lol, BSG, that was going to be my first comment
wow
every song ever made on one disc
Errrmmmm, Holographic Versatile Disc has been invented a while ago that can hold up to 3.9TB of data, so 0.4TB is pretty small in comparison.
Check HVDs out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc
#8, YES VERY SLOW!!! LOL 0.2 speed burners… if that..
#4, YES you would need to make at least 2x copies of everything, as you should now regardless. Also imagine format problems.. imagine if you burnt this and tried to read on a different drive and it just refused, you might be a bit upset!!
#1, for me, a lot of DOCUMENTARIES.. no pron !
I think it’s evil i’d rather see something in real life ahah
#9, I have not had any problems with externals buy good brand and make sure to regularly keep area clean and use air cleaners on PC regularly.. yeah 10 year hdds for the win.. i’m still gaming with a 2 button acer ball wheel mouse from 13 years ago!! Doesnt die like laser…
lol every song ever made on one disc idiot!
I got over 500gb of mp3 albumz 350gb of it is rnb/rap/hip hop
#14 yes hologram hdd / optical storage is way of the future.. i think we need hologram hdd’s first though. NO IDEA why we still using magnetic tape when this technology has been around a decade now.. first informed of this by a pure mathematician a decade ago
#16 yes lol music will never end
futurama said ‘all music disc 1 and 2′ joke but seriously every SINGLE SECOND out comes 1000x more records and demos from all over the world from new groups, not to mention all the music pre-recorded times, rare live shows, bootlegs etc, you will NEVER hear or get all the music .. impossible
and grows more impossible every day
has anyone had reliable success with dual layer dvd?
multiple layers = multiple problems
#10(any1): H O L Y F U C K I N G S H I T, go rot in hell god damn copycat noob.
@17
They’d have to do something similar to what they did with the UMD format (PSP discs), that’s too much data to risk on scratches.
Wonder how long it would take to burn a disc like 4 hours
only need about 4 of those for all the porn i have
Scratch it, and there goes 20GB of data
should make it 12 layers instead (300gb) and have the first 4 layers as protection (empty, more durable, scratch resistant)
AMIRITE?
ok I don’t know anything about optical crap
theres even a 500 gig and 1 terrabyte optical disk…
I want a 400 disc changer that takes these things and is controlled by computer.
everything is about price per gigabyte!!!
this days is cheaper to buy hard disks than blu-ray disks
when the bd-r price reach 1.50 euro (25GB) and if this 16 layer “BD” price is less than 24.00 euro then those technologies will be useful, at this time is crap!! at least 15.00 $ to buy a bd-r and 400 euro for the recorder.. and 100 euro for the reader… why? when i can buy a 1000GB hard disk for 140 euro
F* U SONY!!!
thanks for listening…
the BR group already had 200GB version in the lab.
Fiend:
cRAP is not music.
Wow! Just twelve of those would store everything I have. Nice.
@33 only 12? Blueray takes up alot of space
this would be good for my porn storage since my 500gb hd is running out of space
I support

bdrw is not available in market. where a 1000GB hard disk for 140 euro where I store and delete data at least 5 year. then why bluray?
screw sony, blu-ray, hollywood, etc. bring out the next thing.
we need an improvement in computer/data storage, not just a couple of extra pixels in hollywood movies.
As usual the real question comes down to the price.
Blu-Ray is ridiculously expensive per disc as is, when you try to find a burner.. it’s better just to buy a HD.
true. even DL DVDs are still expensive, well above a $1, compared to the price reduction CD-R and DVD+-R got in their lifetime. not to mention that only verbatim makes DL that might stand time.
CD-Rs were free after rebate for a long time a couple of years ago, now nobosy buys them anymore so the price went back to a couple of cents per disk.
This increased layer stuff has been getting our hopes up to the sky and today all we got is this double as a standard and for sure , like above mine has never worked and those expensive blank dvds are now in trash can.
Pioneer is going in a VERY wrong direction here.
You mean we will still be talking about “discs” 10 years from now??? HELL NO!!
It will all be digital discs/sticks (invisable media)
Its happeneing now, discs are QUICKLY becoming the past!
Records came – Records left
8-Tracks came – 8 Tracks left
Reel to Reel came – Reel to Reel left
Tapes came – Tapes left
Beta Came – Beta Left
VHS came – VHS Left
Compact Discs came – Compant Dics are just about gone
LaserDisk came – LaserDisk left
MiniCD came – MiniCD left VERY quicky…
DVD came – DVD’s are just about gonzo!
HD-DVD came – HD-DVD left in a HURRY!
Blu-Ray come – Blu-Ray…..????
Portable Media Players (Mp3/video)…???
I recall when the cd burners were first coming out, they were going for over $1000.. hahaha, now they are in the bargin bin, anywhere!
Changing media = More Money… But to stick with “Discs” I think our technology is WAY better than that!
Rapidshare links please
Prob take days to burn
Hoax…!!!!
Is this any better than floppy discs?
Blu-ray blanks are too expensive… this 400 will i need a mortgage to buy some?
@ NinjaGaijin
“i’m still gaming with a 2 button acer ball wheel mouse from 13 years ago!! Doesnt die like laser…”
That’s not gaming. You must suck at COD4 online with that piece of crap mouse.
Meh, I need at least a terabyte before I’d consider it useful.
what happened to the solid-state devices they were developing ? Much safer and way faster than a 16-layers disc.
10TB to 100TB optical disc technology invented by Romanian inventor Eugen Pavel:
http://www.dntb.ro/users/frdbuc/hyper-cdrom/hyper.htm
Oh yeah, back in 1999.
@ Alex
Here look at this Wikipedia entry on 3D optical storage and take note of the section on groups developing the technology. Your Romanian hero is noticeably absent.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_optical_data_storage
@Good game
Unfortunately Eugen Pavel is not Pioneer… or Sony, Philips, Toshiba, etc.
@ Alex
You see the company that this great man set up went bankrupt in 2002(Constellation 3D). It’s tech was aquired by another company who are planning to release a 22-32 GB, up to 100 GB disk using it, a far cry from the 10TB to 100TB you quote!
You should have realised that it was just marketing speak from someone desperate for money, and that he NEVER made a 10TB disk or any disk like this, and it seems that his technology is outdated already, with lower capacity than Blueray.
@Alex
Look I know it’s hard for Romanians as it is for Polish like me(Poland also does a lot of blue laser research but can’t really compete with the Japs etc.) But I think our nations get too carried away with believing every clown with an idea and cheer him on even if it’s obvious that the idea is bad.
Sorry bout the joke bout Romanian transport:) My wife is Romanian and I live in Galati, and even here Romanians tend to drive lot nicer cars than back in Australia where I lived before!
Cheers
@Good game
It’s ok, I guess you’re right, anyway my point was that this 400GB disk isn’t really that impressive and, also, a lot of people cannot afford even a Blu-ray writer, I guess a writer for these 400Gb ones will be even more expensive. Take care.
that’s a lot of loading lol but a LOT of porn :O
Read only? I hope it’s at least “write once” …
@51 Average data-transfer rate: 3Mb/s
lolz. nice to have that storage but you would be sitting in front of your computer for a year to read it.
@14 HVD could hold 4,600–11,900 hours of video—just over one year of uninterrupted video or over 26.5 years of uninterrupted stereo audio.
The HVD also has a transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s (125 MB/s).
So it could burn a 7OO MB avi video in about 5 seconds…
I remember when single layer (write once) DVD’s were £20 each! The price of BDRW and will come down in time, not overnight.
@30 Someone
I think u are right in many ways, magnetic HDD is more reliable media than optical discs which are very prone to scratches though they occupy more space so not good for huge storage archive. solid state memory is reliable too but has the same shortcoming. Tapes are still very good just for backing up data.
BTW very soon (think months) Pioneer is also planning to launch affordable drives that will be able to write to this type of media and Blu-Ray, dvd etc. as well
. Hope that will finally heat things up.
But will it play Halo 3?
in about 10 years people will say “did you know that in 2008 people actually thought they would never need a 400gb disc?”
Great, I never liked Blu-ray. When/If this comes to movie business, I hope they invent something new, that DVD doesn’t have. For now, the only reason behind Blu-ray is better resolution. Unlike DVD versus VHS, DVD offered much more than just better resolution…
When the price of a disk comes down to about $17 each (400G/4.7G*$0.20), I’ll think about buying one. Or not. That’d be too much data to risk losing at one time if the disk went bad.
This just another step for making money i wonder when they will itroduce the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology that would hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of information!
Ok too much KB, GB, TB, NB… now there should be a unlimited storage device like an artificial brain brain or something lolz
There was something I saw about infinite storage before that related to spinning an electron to read binary data instead of moving it. I cant find it but it mentioned using the super position of the electron.
OLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD news.
Just buy a damn portable hard drive! Probably costs the same…Plus, its got better compatibility.
mmm. infinite storage capacity you say?
why not just build in a usb antrance in our brain we only use 5 % of oure brain kapacity so 95 % is free how much TB whould oure brain hold?
just imagine…. an entire tv seris on 1 disc!… the world is ending?
i mean every episode of a show like x-files or star trek…. goddam
we use 10% of our potential, not 10% brain mass
hard drives have the potential to corrupt data so hard drives are not that safe. i’d use this to back up all my data.. my files and especially my AV *_*
thats good and all but we should stop with optical disks cause they scratch very easily and theres your money gone we need more usb memory which is more longer lasting
