400GB optical disc invented by Pioneer
Got a big archiving project you’ve been itching to do? Pioneer’s latest development could help you keep all your data in one nice, little circular package. The Japanese electronics maker has been working on an optical disc, which, like Blu-ray, can store 25GB of data in a single layer. But Pioneer says it’s one-upped the high-definition format to the sixteenth degree. The company announced today that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.
Blu-ray comes in single layer (25GB) and dual-layer (50GB) flavors. Pioneer does say that because the lens specification for reading the discs is similar to Blu-ray, “it is possible to maintain compatibility” between its disc and Blu-ray discs. That’s not saying it will be compatible, but it would make sense since Pioneer is one of the original Blu-ray Disc Association members. However, plans for that archiving project will have to be put on pause if you want to use this technology. Pioneer is going to demonstrate it at an industry conference next week, but for now the disc is read-only. Eventually, they’ll add write capability as well.

Cool if it is compatible with Blu-ray burners then I can actually back up my stuff in the future as it is now I don’t trust external hard drives cause I’ve had 3 or 4 die around a year from purchase and still have hard drives that came with my dads computers ten years ago that still work..

Errrmmmm, Holographic Versatile Disc has been invented a while ago that can hold up to 3.9TB of data, so 0.4TB is pretty small in comparison.

They’d have to do something similar to what they did with the UMD format (PSP discs), that’s too much data to risk on scratches.

when the bd-r price reach 1.50 euro (25GB) and if this 16 layer “BD” price is less than 24.00 euro then those technologies will be useful, at this time is crap!! at least 15.00 $ to buy a bd-r and 400 euro for the recorder.. and 100 euro for the reader… why? when i can buy a 1000GB hard disk for 140 euro

bdrw is not available in market. where a 1000GB hard disk for 140 euro where I store and delete data at least 5 year. then why bluray?
screw sony, blu-ray, hollywood, etc. bring out the next thing.
we need an improvement in computer/data storage, not just a couple of extra pixels in hollywood movies.
As usual the real question comes down to the price.
Blu-Ray is ridiculously expensive per disc as is, when you try to find a burner.. it’s better just to buy a HD.
true. even DL DVDs are still expensive, well above a $1, compared to the price reduction CD-R and DVD+-R got in their lifetime. not to mention that only verbatim makes DL that might stand time.
CD-Rs were free after rebate for a long time a couple of years ago, now nobosy buys them anymore so the price went back to a couple of cents per disk.
This increased layer stuff has been getting our hopes up to the sky and today all we got is this double as a standard and for sure , like above mine has never worked and those expensive blank dvds are now in trash can.
Pioneer is going in a VERY wrong direction here.

You see the company that this great man set up went bankrupt in 2002(Constellation 3D). It’s tech was aquired by another company who are planning to release a 22-32 GB, up to 100 GB disk using it, a far cry from the 10TB to 100TB you quote!
You should have realised that it was just marketing speak from someone desperate for money, and that he NEVER made a 10TB disk or any disk like this, and it seems that his technology is outdated already, with lower capacity than Blueray.

Look I know it’s hard for Romanians as it is for Polish like me(Poland also does a lot of blue laser research but can’t really compete with the Japs etc.) But I think our nations get too carried away with believing every clown with an idea and cheer him on even if it’s obvious that the idea is bad.
Sorry bout the joke bout Romanian transport:) My wife is Romanian and I live in Galati, and even here Romanians tend to drive lot nicer cars than back in Australia where I lived before!

It’s ok, I guess you’re right, anyway my point was that this 400GB disk isn’t really that impressive and, also, a lot of people cannot afford even a Blu-ray writer, I guess a writer for these 400Gb ones will be even more expensive. Take care.

@14 HVD could hold 4,600–11,900 hours of video—just over one year of uninterrupted video or over 26.5 years of uninterrupted stereo audio.
The HVD also has a transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s (125 MB/s).
So it could burn a 7OO MB avi video in about 5 seconds…
I remember when single layer (write once) DVD’s were £20 each! The price of BDRW and will come down in time, not overnight.

I think u are right in many ways, magnetic HDD is more reliable media than optical discs which are very prone to scratches though they occupy more space so not good for huge storage archive. solid state memory is reliable too but has the same shortcoming. Tapes are still very good just for backing up data.
BTW very soon (think months) Pioneer is also planning to launch affordable drives that will be able to write to this type of media and Blu-Ray, dvd etc. as well
. Hope that will finally heat things up.

Great, I never liked Blu-ray. When/If this comes to movie business, I hope they invent something new, that DVD doesn’t have. For now, the only reason behind Blu-ray is better resolution. Unlike DVD versus VHS, DVD offered much more than just better resolution…
When the price of a disk comes down to about $17 each (400G/4.7G*$0.20), I’ll think about buying one. Or not. That’d be too much data to risk losing at one time if the disk went bad.
This just another step for making money i wonder when they will itroduce the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology that would hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of information!

There was something I saw about infinite storage before that related to spinning an electron to read binary data instead of moving it. I cant find it but it mentioned using the super position of the electron.

hard drives have the potential to corrupt data so hard drives are not that safe. i’d use this to back up all my data.. my files and especially my AV *_*
thats good and all but we should stop with optical disks cause they scratch very easily and theres your money gone we need more usb memory which is more longer lasting
